‘Joker’ takes a new and unexpected approach at exploring the origins of the legendary DC Comics villain, allowing the character a chance to truly shine on the big screen without having to share the spotlight.
‘Rambo: Last Blood’ is a brutal and unapologetically graphic fifth and potentially final entry in the saga of John Rambo that never pulls its punches. In many ways this isn’t your average Rambo film, with no war-like scenarios or dictators to be taken out, the film instead keeps things incredibly personal…
‘Ad Astra’ is a touching, terrifying and beautifully detailed tale occurring in a fairly plausible near future that’s carefully created and played out with a fittingly uneasy tone and plenty of tension, while always retaining a very human motive and moving aura to everything within.
As 2019 comes to a close and the New Year quickly approaches, I’ve done my best to compile my ten favorite films of this year. Please do keep in mind that even as the year wraps, there are still far too many movies that I haven’t yet had the chance to check out, and out of all I have seen there was certainly no shortage of great titles to consider…
‘Lucky Day’ initially hints at having promise and serves up a collection of questionable characters with some solid star power portraying them and takes viewers along on a wild, nonsensical and over the top thriller that has its moments, but sadly falters and fails more than it succeeds.
‘IT Chapter Two’ concludes the terrifying tale based upon Stephen King’s infamous novel and does a great job of remaining faithful to the story while still making a few alterations along the way to keep things fresh.
‘Hustlers’ is an entertaining film with some capable stars that offers a nicely crafted visual ambience of the world it explores and some capable individuals comprising the cast. It’s fun and frequently quite funny, although fails to truly allow us to understand and appreciate these characters
‘Ready or Not’ is a smart, brutal and darkly humorous horror comedy that takes off at full speed after the necessary setup and introductions and takes viewers along for a wildly original and incredibly fun ride that only exceeds expectations as it tears throughout the beautifully detailed insanity occurring within this expansive mansion.
‘RoboCop’ has certainly become far more than a mere film over the years. With this original classic spawning two sequels, an animated series and video games, plus a toy line, eventual reboot and various comics, TV films/shows and more.
‘Angel Has Fallen’ is a solid third entry in the action franchise that makes for a notable improvement over the still incredibly fun previous sequel, bringing more personal intensity and heart to this installment yet never failing to deliver enough of the explosive, bloody and beautifully crafted action sequences the series has become known for either.
‘Good Boys’ is a crude, vulgar and occasionally somewhat heartwarming tale of friendship and the struggles of being a kid, especially in today’s age. It’s consistently fun and often quite hilarious, although certainly not perfect either.
‘The Kitchen’ is a tense, violent and quite enjoyable crime thriller largely grounded in reality, yet with a fictional twist that allows for its share of surprises along the way (some far more rewarding than others).
‘The Peanut Butter Falcon’ is a phenomenal piece of filmmaking that hits all of the right marks. Touching, frequently funny and downright beautiful in its approach, surroundings and tone, it comes together into a massively enjoyable tale that’s drastically unlike nearly everything else you’ll see this year
‘Bliss’ is a splendidly insane and blood-drenched horror masterpiece, not to mention one of the most noteworthy horror films in some time.

‘Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw’ is a hilarious and lightning paced good time overloaded with visually spectacular action and over the top, extravagant chases and fight scenes that never fail to keep you glued to the screen with a grin slapped across your face.
‘Tone-Deaf’ is a dark and somewhat comedic thriller that serves up a bloody and tense tale that goes to some mildly surprising places and isn’t afraid to get nasty on occasion.
