‘Frankenhooker’ tells the hilariously twisted tale of medical student Jeffrey Franken who sees his fiancé killed in a tragic accident and becomes determined to bring her back, but to do so he’ll need some fresh parts. Creating a new explosive super crack drug and gathering a group of prostitutes for what they believe to be an innocent enough party, things turn truly deadly when they get ahold of the dangerous drug and are blown to pieces. Now Jeffrey will have to utilize the right parts and try his questionable skills before an approaching storm if he hopes to resurrect his love, but his methods of doing so might just result in a whole new heap of unexpected problems arising.

‘Frankenhooker’ was directed by Frank Henenlotter which he also co-wrote with Robert Martin and Henenlotter does a great job of guiding along the humorously graphic and over the top fun while embracing the tongue-in-cheek tone throughout. The film’s cast includes James Lorinz, Patty Mullen, Louise Lasser, John Zacherle, Shirley Stoler, and more. Some of the performances are certainly better than others but the majority fit quite well for the film’s goofy tone and do the trick at the very least.

Frank Henenlotter’s zany, sleazy and surprising cult classic ‘Frankenhooker’ was originally released in 1990 and while I shockingly had never seen this one, I’ve always enjoyed the strange offerings from Henenlotter and can still vividly remember first being introduced to such other twisted gems as ‘Brain Damage’ decades ago so I was quite excited to finally give ‘Frankenhooker’ a whirl and it did not disappoint. A wildly goofy, twisted and sleazy good time that’s as messed up as it is hilarious in a darkly comedic way, it may have aged but you’d almost wonder based on just how stunning this 4K presentation from Synapse looks.

It’s hard not to appreciate such outrageously unique offbeat films like this and the ride keeps the fun coming before going straight off the deep end in the best way possible for one electrifying final half hour or so that is as weird and twisted as it is incredibly fun for those who enjoy this type of movie. If you’re a fan of any of Frank Henenlotter’s other offerings or similar goofy horror-comedy films from the era but like me haven’t ever seen this one, I would say it’s definitely time to rectify that.
