Synopsis:

In its inaugural flight into the new DC Cinematic Universe, “Supergirl” reveals the origin of the interplanetary nomad Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, cousin of Kal-El, better known as Superman. Headstrong, worldly-wise, and often reckless, Supergirl exudes a brand of heroism all her own—truthful, relatable, and always on her own terms. But when an unexpected and ruthless adversary strikes too close to home, Kara reluctantly joins forces with an unlikely companion. Together they undertake an epic, interstellar journey, struggling to balance one’s need for vengeance with the pursuit of justice—and to save the life of Kara’s best friend, her dog Krypto. Ultimately Supergirl will prove that doing good can be tough… and it doesn’t always have to be nice.

The next chapter in the DC Studios universe, ‘Supergirl’ invites you to get to know Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl. Unable to get past the history that haunts her and spending her time traversing the universe and getting wasted alongside her one true friend Krypto the dog, Kara is largely just existing. After Kara crosses paths with a young woman who had her entire family slaughtered by a group of Brigands led by the gleefully sadistic Krem, Kara is forced to alter her priorities when Krypto is shot with a poison dart by Krem, allowing Kara three days to attain the antidote before it’s too late. Now Kara must try and return to her more heroic ways (yet with a bit of an edge) if she hopes to save her friend and stop the deadly Brigands before they can cause more misery throughout the galaxy.

Directed by Craig Gillespie (The Finest Hours, Cruella) from a screenplay written by Ana Nogueira (marking her feature length writing debut), Gillespie does a nice job at the helm of ‘Supergirl’ guiding along the darker ride with heart and plenty of tension and excitement sprinkled throughout. The film’s cast includes Milly Alcock (TV’s House of the Dragon), Matthias Schoenaerts (Amsterdam), Eve Ridley (TV’s Witcher), David Krumholtz (Oppenheimer), Emily Beecham (The Covenant), with David Corenswet (Superman 2025) and Jason Momoa (Aquaman), and most offer generally solid and fitting performances in each of their roles.

‘Supergirl’ is a very different type of film than Gunn’s ‘Superman’ which introduced us to this interpretation of Kara Zor-El and it offers a fun ride that’s gritty, dark and far bleaker than her cousin’s latest outing, yet it’s also not nearly as bad as many would like you to believe. It may not be overloaded with flashy, stylistic action or visual splendor and instead offers a collection of locations/planets for things to play out that tend to be as dusty and grimy as the story itself. There’s plenty of heart to the tale and while Krypto is out of commission for much of the movie, the story is still prominently about him and even more so about the bond he and Kara share. At the same time it’s not outstanding in every way by any means and it does suffer from a largely uninteresting villain and a few too many characters we don’t necessary care about like it seems we should.

One of the most noteworthy elements of ‘Supergirl’ is surely the introduction of Jason Momoa as Lobo, a beloved character throughout the DC Comics lore and the one that Momoa has always been determined to play, and he does a great job of bringing some fun and darkness to the role; clearly having a lot of fun all the while. While Lobo isn’t one of the biggest characters within and curiously enough doesn’t actually play a key role in anything crucial, he’s still one of the most enjoyable aspects throughout and it’s hard not to have a grin on your face whenever he happens to appear. Even so, ‘Supergirl’ is a fun and generally well-constructed ride that may not be perfect but still marks a solid entry in this new DC comics movie universe that has plenty to offer.

Overall, ‘Supergirl’ delivers a darker and grittier yet still exciting ride with Kara Zor-El as she struggles to find her place in the galaxy. It struggles in a few departments including featuring a lesser known and frankly not very special villain and a lack of any truly mesmerizing action sequences, but at the same time benefits from the somewhat more grounded approach in other ways as it allows Kara’s story to truly take center stage and not be overshadowed by visual style and FX eye candy at every turn. While many have been disappointed with it, I enjoyed ‘Supergirl’ quite a bit and for the DC fans and those that can go in without any set expectations and don’t mind a somewhat darker and more gritty adventure, ‘Supergirl’ is definitely recommended and well worth making a point of checking out in order to make up your own mind. The amusing and notable introduction of Jason Momoa as Lobo only adds to the fun and alone is probably watching for.

VIDEO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Supergirl’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10, presented in its original 2.39:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks outstanding across the board and it offers a clean, sharp and gorgeously detailed presentation from start to finish that never suffers from any unexpected issues to be located along the way. Details are terrific on characters and clothing, the various planetary locations, spacecraft and more, and the Dolby Vision HDR delivers more vibrant colors noticeable on Supergirl’s suit and plenty of other tidbits, while black levels remain perfectly deep, rich and problem free. Overall, this is a marvelous Ultra High Definition presentation that delivers splendidly at every turn that should easily thrill fans and newcomers alike.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation. This multichannel soundtrack is a blast all its own and it delivers a clean, crisp and consistently aggressive audio presentation throughout. It constantly utilizes all seven available channels in order to send characters and spacecraft, along with action effects, crowd noise and plenty more whipping throughout the various speakers with regularity and never causing any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously to become negatively impacted along the way. Overall, this is a wonderful Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that enhances the fun and excitement throughout and shouldn’t disappoint whatsoever.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Supergirl’ features some entertaining extras that DC fans should enjoy. Included on the release are a pair of ‘Deleted Scenes’ including ‘Extended Shopping Trip with Map’ and ‘Knoll Family’ (running approximately 5 minutes altogether). Also included are various Behind the Scenes Featurettes including ‘The Making of Supergirl’ (approximately 25 minutes), ‘Flying Off the Page’ (11 minutes), ‘Girl’s Best Friend’ (5 minutes), ‘A Practical Legacy’ (11 minutes), ‘The DC Dream: Lobo’ (7 minutes), ‘Showdown at Evely Square’ (8 minutes), ‘Space is a Bad Neighborhood, Babe’ (10 minutes) and ‘Mixtape for a Hero’ (5 minutes). The release also features the Animated Short ‘‘Krypto Saves the Day: Coastal Catastrophe’ (approximately 5 minutes) and ‘You Are Here: A Supergirl Map of the Galaxy’ which is narrated by Eve Ridley in character as “Ruthye Marie Knoll” (approximately 4 minutes).
