Recently dumped Owen (Callum Turner) and hopeful romantic Allie (Monica Barbaro) may be the only people in the city searching for something real on the one night a year when singles are allowed to have sex. ‘One Night Only’ follows two single strangers as they embark upon a night in the city on the one night of the year that non-married individuals are allowed to have sex following questionable laws that took effect a few years prior. Owen was hoping for a special night with his hopeful fiancé only to be kicked to the curb, while Allie once again finds herself searching for something even remotely meaningful after being ditched by her friend yet again. As the two set out on separate courses for the massive night, they seem to repeatedly crash into one another in their quest for something special, but neither seems to realize what they’re seeking might just be right in front of them.

Directed by Will Gluck (Anyone But You, Easy A) from a screenplay written by Travis Braun, Gluck does a solid job at the helm of ‘One Night Only’ guiding along the gimmicky rom com with a sense of fun and vulgar silliness. The film’s cast includes Monica Barbaro (Top Gun: Maverick) and Callum Turner (The Boys in the Boat), in addition to a notable collection of supporting stars including Molly Ringwald (TV’s Riverdale), LeVar Burton (TV’s Star Trek: The Next Generation), Maya Hawke (TV’s Stranger Things), Julia Fox (HIM), Charlie Gillespie (Splitsville), Michelle Hurd (Anyone But You), King Princess (Song Sung Blue), Quintessa Swindell (Black Adam) and more, with most offering capable and fitting performances in each of their roles, while Barbaro and Turner work incredibly well together and their undeniable chemistry repeatedly helps this movie to become as endearing and enjoyable as it is.

‘One Night Only’ is an enjoyable, funny and in many ways largely generic raunchy comedy with a notable gimmick thrown into the mix, yet the gimmick which revolves around a government mandate years prior that made nonmarried sex illegal other than one night a year is often the one element of the film that harms it most and causes some of the heart to be thrown by the wayside at times, while also causing some elements to become notably cheesy; yet that doesn’t mean it always detracts from the fun either, occasionally providing some hilarious moments that may not be overly clever or unique but are done in a manner that will have viewers laughing nonetheless.

As someone that graduated high school the year such raunchy comedies as American Pie and the South Park movie were released, it should come as no surprise that I’ve always had a soft spot for similar vulgar comedy movies and it’s become something we’ve seen far less of over recent years. ‘One Night Only’ very much fits into that group in many ways and it manages to keep the laughs coming pretty consistently throughout, while never hesitating to go to some raunchy and mildly surprising places along the way. It might not be a great movie and it gets caught up in its own gimmick at times, but it’s also got quite a bit of heart under the surface and a terrific pairing in Callum Turner and Monica Barbaro who clearly have chemistry together and bounce off of each other splendidly. A parade of fun guest stars and cameos featuring everyone from Molly Ringwald and LeVar Burton to Pete Davidson and Bobby Cannavalle also help to deliver some standout laughs.

Overall, ‘One Night Only’ is a notably funny and at times heartfelt tale of two single individuals looking for love in all of the wrong places. It’s often fairly generic and over the top, while too often losing itself in the gimmick but still manages to keep the fun and laughs coming and rarely allows itself to become dull or unamusing. While it has its issues and suffers at times from the film’s gimmick which isn’t always complementary to the heart and soul of the story, ‘One Night Only’ is a raunchy and frequently hilarious good time that’s recommended to any fans of similar raunch comedies or those who are particularly fond of the lead stars who help to make this one become far better than it might have been otherwise. If you’re interested and looking for an easygoing comedy to relax with one evening, then ‘One Night Only’ should certainly be worth checking out.

VIDEO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘One Night Only’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with HDR-10, presented in its original 2.39:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks great altogether and it provides a clean and richly detailed presentation from start to finish without any notable issues arising along the way. Detail is solid on characters, city streets and other locations, and the HDR offers some minor improvements on pieces of clothing, some nature elements and other tidbits, while black levels remain suitably deep, clean and problem free. Overall, this is a very nice Ultra High Definition presentation that holds up well at every turn and should satisfy both fans and newcomers.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation. This multichannel soundtrack may not be overwhelmingly aggressive but it does its job well when needed and offers a clean, crisp and capable audio presentation throughout. It takes advantage of all seven available channels to send some crowd and city noise, music and other various effects whenever fitting, while always ensuring that any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously remain clean and fully audible at every turn. Overall, this is a solid Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that delivers well wherever required and shouldn’t disappoint, even if it won’t give your surround setup much of a workout most of the time.
