Synopsis:

After a teen’s premonition of a deadly race-car crash helps saves the lives of his peers, Death sets out to collect those who evaded their end.

The fourth installment in the horror franchise invites you to take a new terrifying ride in 3D. ‘The Final Destination’ joins a group of friends attending a racing event when one man has a premonition of a gruesome crash that results in countless bloody deaths. As the young man gets his friends and various others out just prior to the crash becoming a reality, the new group of survivors becomes the latest on death’s list as they soon begin to die in horrific ways one after the other. Now the remaining survivors will have to race against the clock to find a way to stop the pattern before it’s too late for all of them.

Directed by David R. Ellis from a screenplay written by Eric Bress, Ellis does a nice job back at the helm for ‘The Final Destination’ fully embracing the goofy, gory tone much more inline with the second film in the series which he also directed. The film’s cast includes Bobby Campo, Shantel VanSanten, Nick Zano, Haley Webb and Mykelti Williamson along with more, and while some certainly offer better performances than others, none are overly horrific.

‘The Final Destination’ is a wildly gory, goofy and over the top good time that’s even more of a blast in 3D. Taking a more silly tone than some of the other installments, the fourth offering is by no means the finest in the saga or even close, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a great deal of fun that’s made even more enjoyable by the perfectly fitting 3D gimmick. It’s packed with wildly gruesome and ridiculous deaths and plenty of bloody chaos, while never trying to take itself seriously and instead going all in on the over the top brutality and bloodshed.

The film fully embraces the 3D effect and repeatedly goes out of its way to throw things in your face along the way but with the silly vibe and the ridiculousness of much of the film it only helps it work that much better with the 3D complement and if you have the ability this one is definitely superior in the format and it loses something without the added dimension. It’s also refreshingly short clocking in at just over 80 minutes which results in a fast-paced good time that never dawdles or lingers in character growth or any of the things many films might focus on; knowing full well what the fans want to see and in that regard it delivers splendidly.

Now fans who missed out on the initial 3D Blu-ray release have the opportunity to pick up ‘The Final Destination’ once again with this new reissue of the film presented in both full 3D and in 2D. If you’re 3D capable then that’s without a doubt the way to go with this one and I had nearly as much fun revisiting this one in 3D on my projector than I did when first checking it out so many years ago. The good news is that even if you’re not able to view in 3D this new 1-disc release also includes the option to view the film in standard 2D. Warner has been reissuing many of their 3D blu’s in this manner lately as a matter of fact which is really nice to see, so if you’re a fan who missed out on some of these before they went out of print I would suggest checking out Movie Zyng for some of these nice reissues which makes a great way to add these to your collection without having to deal with pricey second-hand sellers.

VIDEO:

The Blu-ray release of ‘The Final Destination’ features a full 1080p High Definition presentation with a 2.40:1 Aspect Ratio presented in 3D encoded in MVC and in 2D encoded in VC-1. The 3D video presentation looks marvelous and delivers a clean, crisp and immersive presentation that pulls you right into the bloody fun and insanity, filled with numerous popout effects that repeatedly go out of their way to embrace the gimmick and make this one even more wild and silly in the best way possible. The depth is often less noteworthy than many films shot in the format, but even so the popout effects and sharp edges throughout should make this one well worth revisiting in this format if you have the option. For those that aren’t 3D capable the release also offers the option to view the film in 2D and while that presentation certainly feels lackluster and underwhelming without the added dimension, it should still suffice when needed. Overall, this is a great 3D presentation and a solid enough 2D presentation that offers two ways for fans to watch the film and finally gives 3D fans a way to purchase it at home again after all these years.

AUDIO:

The Blu-ray release features a 5.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack for both the 3D and 2D presentation. This multichannel soundtrack offers a clean, sharp and wildly aggressive audio presentation that utilizes all five available channels in order to constantly send a whirlwind of activity zipping throughout the various speakers with everything from car crashes to car wash malfunctions and a whole lot more, while never causing any simultaneously occurring audio elements to clash with one another along the way. Overall, this is a great 5.1 DTS-HD MA soundtrack that repeatedly adds to the chaos and fun of the viewing experience throughout.
