Synopsis:

Danny (Sam Christensen), a punk runaway kid, stumbles upon an undead corpse, rotting behind a dumpster. Convinced that the only way to save humanity is by killing god, the duo road-trip through a world of monsters, demons, angels, and the horrors of the Midwest.

‘My Only Friend’s A Corpse’ follows Danny, a lonely punk kid who tired of his life and drunken father runs away only to quickly discover an undead corpse rotting behind a dumpster. Intending to let it be, Danny is convinced by the undead corpse to assist him in his mission to save humanity by killing god after being horribly wronged. Hesitantly taking the corpse along with him and stealing a truck the pair head out on a twisted road trip through the Midwest while attempting to fight off those who would try to stop them. As the journey quickly becomes increasingly deadly and bloody Danny soon realizes he’s stuck for better or worse to complete the task as he and his newfound friend begin to develop a bond along the way.

Written and directed by Jack Bayless and marking his directorial debut, Bayless does an impressive job at the helm of ‘My Only Friend’s A Corpse’ guiding along this minimal budget endeavor with fun, heart, style and plenty of twisted laughs and bloody fun offered up throughout. The film’s cast includes Sam Christensen, Alicia Santos, Jayce Lamb, Brayden J Copp, Auryona Webb, and more and while some performances may not be flawless, the majority are actually very decent for the most part.

‘My Only Friend’s A Corpse’ is a solid DIY horror-comedy that’s as clever as it is funny, twisted and gruesome. You never know exactly what to expect with an incredibly small indie title such as this but I found myself repeatedly impressed with just how solid of a film this one managed to be even with a limited cast and crew and an incredibly small budget on top of it. It follows a punk kid who finds some excitement and uncertainty in his life when he embarks upon a dark road trip with an undead corpse with the sole mission of killing god, and this one never goes quite the way you might expect as the duo cross paths with a deadly angel, demons and plenty of other twisted surprises and road blocks throughout their journey.

The film’s cast does a solid job of making this one work better than it might otherwise and helping this very unique script to click and keep the fun coming, as well as the laughs and bloody chaos. It’s dark, frequently humorous and never afraid to take things in some clever and humorously odd and even goofy directions that for the most part work remarkably well. The ride only becomes increasingly bloodier and crazier as it progresses until arriving at its unexpected and memorable conclusion. Anyone that appreciates similar indie horror films should find plenty to appreciate here.

Overall, ‘My Only Friend’s A Corpse’ is a well-made, fun and at times quite bloody and odd road trip like you’ve never seen before. It’s kind of ironic how an independent and very low budget ride such as this can manage to be far more unique and solid than many big budget studio titles but this one never fails to keep things interesting, not to mention with a nice progression and pacing utilized throughout. If you’re a genre fan that appreciates low budget DIY style films that are incredibly well done for what they are then ‘My Only Friend’s A Corpse’ is recommended and well worth going out of your way to support and check out. If you’re not up for spending the money on the physical release prior to watching, you can also find it to buy or rent on many big digital retailers.
