Synopsis:

Illumination expands its joyful Minions universe with a riotous chapter featuring all-new characters in the biggest global animated franchise in history. This is the rambunctious, ridiculous and totally true story of how the Minions conquered Hollywood as movie stars, lost everything, unleashed monsters onto the world and then banded together to try saving the planet from the mayhem they created.

‘Minions & Monsters’ takes viewers back to the roaring 1920’s and follows a new group of Minions as they trek the globe searching for the perfect big boss to serve and losing one after another in the most hilariously ridiculous ways fathomable. After accidentally crashing a movie set, the Minions end up as the new big stars of the silent film era, but when sound makes its debut things get complicated. Splitting into two groups, one sets out to search for a new boss, while another small group attempts to make their own movie and unwisely unleashing some monsters along the way that cause even bigger troubles for them.

Directed by Pierre Coffin (Despicable Me, Minions) and co-directed by Patrick Delage from a screenplay written by Brian Lynch (Minions) and Pierre Coffin, Coffin (and Delage) does a nice job at the helm of ‘Minions & Monsters’ guiding along this prequel to the prequels with humor, fun and a surprisingly dark sense of humor at times. The new film’s notable voice cast includes Pierre Coffin (Minions: The Rise of Gru), Trey Parker (TV’s South Park), Allison Janney (The Addams Family 2019), Christoph Waltz (Alita: Battle Angel), Jesse Eisenberg (Rio), Jeff Bridges (Surf’s Up), Zoey Deutch (TV’s Invincible), Bobby Moynihan (Hoppers), Phil LaMarr (TV’s Futurama) and more, with each contributing nicely to the fun and craziness throughout.

‘Minions & Monsters’ is a fun, frequently hilarious and occasionally somewhat dark new tale in the Despicable Me universe that introduces viewers to a new group of Minions to fall in love with. It’s a bit all over the place and jumps from various storylines while shifting from a love letter to the world of 1920’s Hollywood to a monster movie and other concepts at times, yet I found myself enjoying this one far more than I expected, especially after going in with my expectations in check. The goofy and all over the place story only seems to align splendidly with these weird characters that tend to be as random and erratic as this new chapter is.

It repeatedly feels like Minions architect Pierre Coffin is just rolling with the fun this time around and never hesitating to dive into some unexpected areas while allowing things to get pretty silly and even nonsensical throughout yet and I couldn’t help but appreciate the unique approach this time around. A great selection of voice talent including everyone from Trey Parker to Jeff Bridges only helps to keep the fun coming and while I can’t say it’s a perfect film likely to make an awards run or anything like that, once I was able to just roll with the goofy tone and lack of focus I must say I had quite a blast with this one and if anything I enjoyed it more than some of the previous installments even if many others seemingly did not.

Overall, ‘Minions & Monsters’ delivers another fun, wildly silly and rambunctious ride into goofiness with your favorite little yellow baddies. It doesn’t follow a clear and direct story and it repeatedly allows things to get out of hand and jump all over the place story-wise, yet that strange and nonsensical approach only seems to mimic the style of these goofy characters and when you can just roll with the zany fun it offers a thoroughly enjoyable ride worth taking for fans of the franchise. If you’re a fan of the ‘Despicable Me’ and ‘Minions’ films then ‘Minions & Monsters’ is definitely recommended. Some fans are liable to enjoy it more than others but I would encourage making a point of giving it a chance and deciding for yourself; I certainly had far more fun with this one than I initially expected to.

VIDEO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Minions & Monsters’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10, presented in its original 2.39:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks spectacular through and through and it delivers a clean, sharp and vibrantly colored presentation from start to finish that never loses its way or suffers from any noticeable issues to be located. Detail is terrific on everything from the character specifics to the throwback surroundings of Hollywood and other elements of the 1920’s, while the Dolby Vision HDR provides a brighter, more lifelike batch of colors that are repeatedly noticeable and black levels are capably rich, deep and clean. Overall, this is a wonderful Ultra High Definition presentation that dazzles at every turn and should easily excite both fans and first time viewers.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation. This multichannel soundtrack is anything but underwhelming and it offers a crisp, clean and consistently immersive audio presentation throughout. It takes advantage of all seven available channels regularly to send music, action and nature effects, crowd chatter and plenty more zipping throughout the various speakers whenever fitting, while always making certain that any dialogue or other audio elements remain clean and discernible every step of the way. Overall, this is a great Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that never disappoints and regularly contributes to the fun.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Minions & Monsters’ includes some enjoyable extras including Behind the Scenes Featurettes and some fun how-to guides for the kids. The included Featurettes are ‘Minions Take on Hollywood’ (running approximately 11 minutes in length), ‘Casting Minions & Monsters’ (running approximately 12 minutes) and ‘Hollywood Sound’ (approximately 4 minutes). The various how-to videos include guides on ‘How to Make Your Own Irene Blob Monster Slime’ (approximately 3 minutes), plus a guide to create your own animated flipbook with ‘Movie-Making Minions Style’ (6 minutes) and ‘How to Draw’ guides for numerous characters from the movie (approximately 12 minutes combined).
