Synopsis:

If you found out we weren’t alone, if someone showed you, proved it to you, would that frighten you? Now the truth belongs to seven billion people in an original event film created and directed by Steven Spielberg, from a screenplay by David Koepp, starring Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson, and Colman Domingo.

‘Disclosure Day’ follows a pair of strangers that are more familiar with each other than they realize as they are forced to navigate numerous dangers, threats and terrifying scenarios when they are thrown into the midst of a government coverup decades in the making that’s on track to be revealed when one individual working behind the scenes has finally had enough and decides that the information concealed regarding life beyond our planet should be made available to the entire world. The move leads to a race against time for some to unveil the information while those trying to keep it from becoming public do everything in their power to prevent it from happening.

Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Steven Spielberg (The Fabelmans, Close Encounters of the Third Kind) from a screenplay written by David Koepp (Jurassic Park) and from a story by Spielberg who does a solid job at the helm of ‘Disclosure Day’ guiding along the intriguing adventure with heart and style. The film’s cast includes Emily Blunt (A Quiet Place), Josh O’Connor (Wake Up Dead Man), Colin Firth (Kingsman: The Secret Service), Eve Hewson (Bridge of Spies), Colman Domingo (Michael), Wyatt Russell (Thunderbolts*) and more, with the majority each offering capable performances as a whole in their roles.

‘Disclosure Day’ is a largely entertaining, fascinating and somewhat timely tale of aliens, the clashes within the human race and the bigger question of what is truly important, and should some of these big secrets be kept under cover or does the world deserve to know the truth of it all. ‘Disclosure Day’ has great promise, consistently picks up the pace throughout and has a lot going for it including an engaging story, a unique collection of characters and a pretty tremendous cast behind it all which is led by a terrific performance by Emily Blunt that keeps everything largely anchored.

While much stands out for the good, ‘Disclosure Day’ doesn’t manage to go as far with things as many will probably wish it had and the two plus hours of plot and character building eventually just sort of end with a whimper instead of a bang. The journey to that point though has a lot that works well including some relatable characters, along with some that are easy to dislike and a capable collection of tense moments, thrilling sequences and plenty of uncertainty to keep you guessing along the way. Perhaps the film’s biggest strength is that many elements of it feel straight out of a summer blockbuster we might have seen a few decades ago and Spielberg certainly still knows how to capture an audience’s attention and retain it.

Overall, ‘Disclosure Day’ is a nicely crafted sci-fi ride that keeps much of the activity far more grounded than you might imagine while keeping things from ever getting too dull thanks to a handful of fun moments and exciting action sequences that propel the bigger tale along, although it falls a bit flat in some significant areas which does somewhat detract from the experience as a whole, yet the terrific guidance of Steven Spielberg and a pretty wonderful performance by lead Emily Blunt help tremendously in making it work better than it might otherwise. ‘Disclosure Day’ is certainly recommended for any fans of Spielberg, Blunt and/or of alien-related films who will all likely want to give a chance and make up your own mind and if you can avoid going in with high expectations you might just enjoy it quite a bit.

VIDEO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Disclosure Day’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10, presented in its original 2.39:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks marvelous as a whole and it provides a sharp, clean and richly detailed presentation from start to finish that never suffers from any notable issues or faults to be uncovered along the way. Detail is spectacular on everything from characters, outdoor locations and scenery, along with action sequences and more, and the Dolby Vision HDR helps improve various tidbits throughout such as the blaring white in certain moments and other colors at times, while black levels and shadowing remain deep, rich and problem free. Overall, this is a wonderful Ultra High Definition that delivers splendidly in all areas and shouldn’t have any trouble exciting fans or newcomers.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation. This multichannel soundtrack delivers a crisp, clean and consistently hard hitting audio presentation throughout. It repeatedly takes advantage of all seven available channels in order to send action and vehicle effects, along with crowd noise, sci-fi effects and plenty more whipping throughout the various speakers whenever appropriate, and always making certain that any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously remain clean and fully audible. Overall, this is a great Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that never underwhelms or disappoints while regularly contributing some additional excitement and tension to the experience.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Disclosure Day’ features a couple of enjoyable extras including the in-depth making of Documentary ‘Encountering the Unknown: Inside Disclosure Day’ (running approximately 54 minutes in length) and the Featurette ‘Spielberg & Williams: A Legendary Collaboration’ (running approximately 4 minutes).
