Synopsis:

Twenty-six years after the original massacre, Cindy, Brenda, Shorty, and Ray get dragged back into the chaos by a brand-new masked killer who clearly never learned when to quit. Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Anna Faris, and Regina Hall reunite, alongside returning favorites, for an outrageous return to the franchise’s original roots, where every target is fair game and every line gets crossed.

The sixth installment in the ‘Scary Movie’ series rejoins the original foursome of Cindy, Brenda, Shorty and Ray as twenty-six years after the first movie the group of high-school friends is reunited and forced to confront another Ghostface killer that refuses to give up, even when things get beyond ridiculous. Now they’ll have to fight to survive another batch of attacks while trying to deal with a new generation of kids being attacked who just might be more of a headache than the killer; with plenty of old friends joining the fun and a lot of hilarious stupidity around every corner.

Directed by Michael Tiddes (A Haunted House, Fifty Shades of Black) from a screenplay written by Marlon Wayans & Shawn Wayans & Keenen Ivory Wayans & Craig Wayans & Rick Alvarez, Tiddes does a decent job at the helm of the new ‘Scary Movie’ guiding along the offensive fun and humor but is unable to find a balance to make this jumbled follow-up settle into something special. The cast of the new movie includes numerous new and returning individuals including Marlon Wayans (Him), Shawn Wayans (White Chicks), Anna Faris (Spa Weekend) and Regina Hall (TV’s Black Monday), along with Teyana Taylor, Dave Sheridan , Lochlyn Munro, Kim Wayans, Cheri Oteri, Chris Elliott, Damon Wayans Jr., Heidi Gardner, Olivia Rose Keegan, Cameron Scott Roberts, Savannah Lee Nassif, Sydney Park, Gregg Wayans and more.

The new ‘Scary Movie’ (or Scary Movie 6) brings back the Wayans’ after all these years (and sequels) and returns the franchise to the aggressively vulgar and offensive style that was introduced in the first two movies and does so with some degree of success, but sadly also a lot of inane stupidity and ridiculous moments that too often than not don’t land as intended. You certainly have to praise the Wayans’ for never being hesitant to go all out and there’s not a single offensive element or subject that they ignore of play it safe with, fully invested in offending as many people as possible and taking things back to a level not often seen in film these days.

First off, let me say I’ve always been a huge fan of the first ‘Scary Movie’ and after revisiting it more times than I can count it still has me laughing consistently throughout, and while the sequel was a pretty fun time in its own right, I have to admit I backed off after the disappointing third installment. While it’s safe to say that this new entry is far more enjoyable and funny than the third film (and I’m only assuming the following two installments as well) it never manages to hit that level of comedic spoof brilliance that the original captured so splendidly. Some of the performances within feel more forced and inorganic this time around as well, especially Marlon Wayans who was one of the biggest joys of the first movie and just clicked as Shorty, but almost feels like he’s struggling to try and return to that here with mixed results including some success but also a lot of cringeworthy bits that just feel off. It has its moments and the ending along with some other tidbits are quite clever to be sure, but the comedic magic that was oozing from the first movie (and the second much of the time) sadly just isn’t here this time around.

Overall, the sixth entry in the ‘Scary Movie’ franchise returns to the offensive, vulgar and pull-no punches roots of the first two movies and never hesitates to try and offend everyone which is commendable these days, but it struggles to capture the magic and hilarity that the original effortlessly served up in spades. There are plenty of funny bits that made me laugh or at least giggle this time around, yet too many of them felt overly stupid or forced and it just never manages to find itself, instead serving as more of a sketch show in a movie that has plenty of rough bits sandwiching the few truly hilarious moments. If you’re a fan of the first two movies, then the new ‘Scary Movie’ is worth checking out, especially since not everyone will appreciate the same bits and styles of humor, but I would encourage renting it or streaming it before making a purchase for those who haven’t yet seen it. Some fans will also surely be disappointed in the lack of the Extended Cut included on the physical release which is entirely absent here and seems to be exclusively available on Digital sadly.

VIDEO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Scary Movie’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation of the Theatrical Version (once again, the Extended Cut is NOT included on the physical release) with Dolby Vision and HDR-10, presented in its original 2.39:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks great as a whole and it delivers a clean, sharp and gorgeously detailed presentation from start to finish that’s absent of any notable issues to be found throughout. Details are solid on characters, backgrounds and everything else and the Dolby Vision HDR fine tunes numerous tidbits and contributes more accurate and lifelike colors on clothing, outdoor locations and more, while black levels remain suitably deep and clean. Overall, this is a fantastic Ultra High Definition presentation that holds up nicely throughout and looks good at every turn.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation. This multichannel soundtrack offers a nice complement to the goofy fun and it provides a crisp, clean and immersive audio presentation throughout. It repeatedly takes advantage of all seven available channels to send music, action effects and plenty more regularly whipping throughout the various speakers, while never allowing any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously to become distorted or rendered problematic. Overall, this is a very nice Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that adds to the fun throughout and shouldn’t disappoint.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Scary Movie’ offers a few entertaining extras, although the Extended Cut of the movie and the ‘Alternate Ending’ available Digitally are unfortunately not included on the release. Included are the Behind the Scenes Featurettes ‘Scream Together’ (running approximately 8 minutes in length), ‘Fresh Meat’ (running approximately 6 minutes), ‘Wayans World’ (approximately 4 minutes) and ‘Scene Dissection’ (9 minutes).
