Synopsis:

EVIL DEAD BURN unleashes the franchise’s most savage and terrifying ride to date with an all-new chapter of carnage and demonic mayhem. After the loss of her husband, a woman seeks solace with her in-laws in their secluded family home. As one by one they are transformed into Deadites—turning the gathering into a family reunion from hell—she comes to discover that the vows she took in life live on… even in death.

‘Evil Dead Burn’ offers a haunting new chapter in the horror franchise that accompanies a woman after the unexpected death of her husband as she hesitantly joins her in-laws to celebrate the man’s life in their secluded rundown home. But when the family members begin turning into Deadites in an attempt to locate a mythical weapon in the family’s possession, the woman must fight her way through the newfound evil overtaking those around her and try to survive the bloody ordeal while simultaneously trying to come to terms with the abusive history of her husband and a family that is unwilling to accept it.

Directed by Sébastien Vanicek (Infested) from a screenplay written by Sébastien Vanicek & Florent Bernard (Meet the Leroys), Vanicek does a rewarding job at the helm of ‘Evil Dead Burn’ guiding along the new installment with a fitting sense of dread and unease. The film’s cast includes Souheila Yacoub (Dune: Part Two), Tandi Wright (Pearl), Hunter Doohan (TV’s Wednesday), Luciane Buchanan (TV’s The Night Agent), Erroll Shand (TV’s Our Flag Means Death) and Maude Davey (TV’s Sisters), with most offering fitting and capable performances in each of their roles that contribute positively to the experience.

‘Evil Dead Burn’ delivers a brutal, grim and unsettling new chapter in the saga that’s as gruesome and unnerving as it is tense and beautifully crafted. It never hesitates in the slightest to dive into truly dark territory covering everything from a woman still haunted by an abusive relationship to full blown gore and bloody insanity once things really start to get going. It also offers some pretty fascinating moments that are hard not to appreciate such as a brutal showdown within a car that utilizes the camera to throw us into disarray, along with a one-shot sequence that’s a treat to behold all its own.

The film offers a fair amount of insight into the lead’s state of mind courtesy of flashbacks and comments while at the same time never delving into the individual members of the family she joins which actually works to the film’s benefit by putting us alongside this woman in an uncomfortable situation and keeping the viewer in the dark and never quite certain what may come about or what reaction or comment might be elicited from the others at any moment which contributes notably to the uncomfortable nature of the whole gathering. Director Sébastien Vanicek does a great job of capturing the grim tone and repeatedly diving into the gruesome chaos without hesitation while offering some truly gorgeous perspectives and shooting choices that consistently stand out in the best way possible.

Overall, ‘Evil Dead Burn’ is a solid new entry in the horror saga that’s bleak, brutal and uncompromisingly violent, and beautifully shot throughout in a manner that’s fitting of the franchise. If you’re a fan of gory, grim and dark horror then this one should prove quite the treat and shouldn’t have any trouble keeping you glued to the screen from start to finish. While non-genre fans may find this one to be a bit much, for those that are fans of the franchise ‘Evil Dead Burn’ is highly recommended and should keep you on edge and engrossed throughout with its dark, gruesome and uncompromising ride into terror. For those who might be understandably hesitant to drop the money on a blind buy, it should be well worth a couple hours and the price of a rental to give a whirl, and it’s also streaming on HBO Max for subscribers as of the time of this writing.

VIDEO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Evil Dead Burn’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10, presented in its original 2.39:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks fantastic and offers a clean, sharp and nicely detailed presentation from start to finish that holds up very well without any notable issues to be uncovered throughout. It brings great detail to everything from character specifics and the dilapidated interiors of the family home to the chaos and bloodshed and the Dolby Vision HDR offers some improvements on elements such as fire, blood and more while black levels remain suitably deep, rich and problem free for this frequently darkly lit film. Overall, this is a great Ultra High Definition presentation that does its job well and looks good at every turn.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation. This multichannel soundtrack offers a clean, crisp and hard hitting audio presentation that repeatedly adds to the tension and bloody fun. It consistently utilizes all seven available channels in order to send action and horror effects, violent chaos, vehicle and nature effects, plus a great deal more whipping throughout the various speakers and never allowing any dialogue or other audio elements to be negatively impacted along the way. Overall, this is a wonderful Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that is an absolute blast and does a great job of enhancing the tension and excitement.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Evil Dead Burn’ features a few enjoyable extras in the way of Behind the Scenes Featurettes including ‘Evil Dead: Blazing the Trail’ (running approximately 5 minutes in length), ‘The Hot Shot: Evil Dead Burn’s One-Shot Sequence’ (running approximately 5 minutes), and ‘This One’s Gonna Burn’ (approximately 5 minutes).
