Remake of the 1958 horror sci-fi about a deadly blob from another planet which consumes everyone in its path. Teenagers try in vain to warn the townsfolk, who refuse to take them seriously.
The 1988 remake of ‘The Blob’ has definitely earned its cult status over the years and still holds up impressively well even today. Featuring all kinds of solid practical effects and a pretty hefty quantity of gore (even for a film of its age), this film is an incredibly fun, bloody and enjoyable remake to the classic Steve McQueen starrer of 1958 that is a must see as well as a must own for genre fans. For those that haven’t yet had the pleasure of this gem, I can’t imagine a better possible way to enjoy it for the first time than with this Blu-Ray release, aside possibly of course from a rare 35mm screening, but that might be even harder to come by than this wonderful Limited Edition Blu-Ray from Twilight Time.
This version of ‘The Blob’ is directed by Chuck Russell, whose work most should be familiar with to a degree, even if you might not be familiar with his name. He made his directorial debut with ‘A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors’ and has since directed such titles as ‘Eraser’ ‘The Mask’ ‘Bless The Child’ and more. The version of the script used for the final film (a number of earlier drafts were discarded/redone if I’m not mistaken) was penned by Russell himself along with the incredibly talented Frank Darabont (director The Green Mile, The Shawshank Redemption, creator of ‘The Walking Dead’ TV series and more). It also features Kevin Dillon (probably best known for his portrayal of Drama on the HBO series ‘Entourage’) and Shawnee Smith (of the ‘Saw’ series) in earlier roles, yet both delivering pretty decent performances, as well as an exceptional mullet by Dillon.
Chuck Russell’s 1988 remake of ‘The Blob’ has finally come home in beautiful High Definition video and audio, on Blu-Ray for the first time thanks to the folks over at Twilight Time. In addition to the best video and audio quality you’re bound to see anywhere for this film, it also includes a number of nice bonus goodies including Audio Commentary with Director Chuck Russell and more (more detailed information regarding the bonus content can be found in the special features section of the technical specification coverage below) making this a must own for fans of the cult classic. While this Limited Edition Series Blu-Ray release by Twilight Time was limited to 5000 units and has already sold out I believe, I’m sure there are other means of acquiring it if you haven’t yet picked up your copy, though those means will surely be quite pricey.
The Twilight Time Limited Edition Series Blu-Ray release of ‘The Blob’ features a full 1080p High Definition presentation utilizing the film’s original 1.85:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks fantastic on this one. The colors and shapes are sharp and detailed, while still maintaining that grain and 35mm feel that is the intended viewing format for the film in the director’s opinion. I can’t imagine this movie possibly looking any better and truer to its film stock source than it does here and fans of the 80’s classic should be absolutely thrilled with this high definition video presentation.
The Blu-Ray release features a lossless 5.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack which sounds pretty solid overall. While a fair amount of the soundtrack is focused to the center channel, the surrounding channels still have their moments and are subtly utilized in the best ways possible, accentuating the wonderful score and adding some fun immersion into the situation for the viewer as well. Most importantly, all of the dialogue, effects and music sound fantastic and impressively clear. This DTS-HD MA 5.1 track should leave the fans quite satisfied.
The Twilight Time Limited Edition Series Blu-Ray release of ‘The Blob’ also includes some pretty enjoyable and worthwhile bonus goodies. The release includes a lossless DTS-HD MA 5.1 channel Isolated Score Track for the film, an Audio Commentary with Director Chuck Russell accompanied by Ryan Turek, as well as ‘Friday Night Frights at The Cinefamily’ which features an interview/Q&A with director Chuck Russell at a 35mm screening of the film. The release also includes the Original Theatrical Trailer (both red & green band versions) and a seven page full color booklet providing artwork, images and a bunch of fun and interesting information regarding the film.
