“A rip-roaring monster flick, all the stops out and pumping with imagination.” – John Stanley, Creature Features
For the first time on home video, you can experience Clive Barker’s original director’s cut of Nightbreed with over 40 minutes of new footage, all mastered in high definition from the original camera negative!
Boone (Craig Sheffer) may be a troubled young man, but his troubles are just beginning. Set up as the fall guy in a string of slasher murders, he decides he’ll hide by crossing the threshold that separates “us” from “them” and sneak into the forbidden subterranean realm of Midian. Boone will live among the monsters.
Hellraiser creator Clive Barker writes (adapting his novel Cabal) and directs this vivid leap into horror that asks: in the battle of man vs. monster, who’s really the monster? The answer supplies flesh-crawling suspense, sudden fear, a colorful Danny Elfman score and a creepy array of shape-shifting beings. They are the Nightbreed, denizens of a world beyond death, beyond the imagination, perhaps beyond anything you’ve seen.
Nearly 25 years after ‘Nightbreed’ initially hit theaters (written and directed by Clive Barker and based on his own novella ‘Cabal’) drastically altered against the wishes of Barker himself to the point of completely ruining the intended effect and purpose of the film, Clive Barker’s true vision of his film ‘Nightbreed’ finally comes to life, and in beautiful High Definition video and audio no less, from the wonderful folks over at Scream Factory. Nearly 45 minutes of restored footage has been inserted into the film, replacing and removing other elements in order to finally realize Barker’s intended vision of this monster movie masterpiece and the resulting effect is outstanding; an event that fans will definitely not want to miss out on.
Not only is ‘Nightbreed: The Director’s Cut’ included here with impressive high definition video and audio presentations, it is absolutely chock full of informative and worthwhile bonus content, including a feature length behind the scenes look at the making of the film, both an audio commentary and introduction by Clive Barker himself and much more (more detailed information regarding the bonus content can be found in the special features section of the technical specification coverage below) making this a Blu-Ray release fans will unquestionably want to make certain to add to their collection as soon as possible.
The Blu-Ray release of ‘Nightbreed: The Director’s Cut’ features a new full 1080p High Definition presentation mastered in HD from the original camera negative and presented here in a 1.78:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks absolutely stunning, especially considering how worn the source of the new integrated footage surely had to be. The colors, shapes and backgrounds are all sharp, smooth and look far better than you can imagine, while still maintaining that gritty film feel that greatly accentuates this wonderfully crafted monster movie. This high definition video presentation definitely gets top marks and should have the fans salivating in pleasure at being able to witness Clive Barker’s true vision of the film in such remarkable quality.
The Blu-Ray release features a lossless 5.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack, in addition to a 2.0 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. I myself of course opted to watch with the 5.1 channel track and it sounds pretty marvelous. The action elements are wonderfully complemented by the multichannel element but the real benefit of it is how fantastic Danny Elfman’s phenomenal score sounds here, spreading its way throughout all five channels in the most glorious way possible. As with the video presentation, this 5.1 channel DTS-HD MA track absolutely gets top marks and should have the fans nearly as thrilled as the video presentation.
While the Deluxe Limited Edition release of ‘Nightbreed: The Director’s Cut’ features an entire additional disc full of bonus content, I myself was provided the Special Edition release for review, so therefore please note the bonus content mentioned here will represent that version only and not the Deluxe Limited Edition which includes a whole whopping additional quantity of extras. The Special Edition release still includes a pretty hefty collection of bonus goodies itself, including a feature length behind the scenes look at the making of the film titled ‘Tribes of the Moon: The Making of Nightbreed’ which includes all kinds of interesting interviews and info, as well as clocking in at over an hour in length. Also included is a lengthy and informative look behind the monster creations in another 40 minute Behind The Scenes special titled ‘Making Monsters: Interviews with Makeup Effects Artists’; as well as a look at the 2nd Unit shooting team in ‘Fire! Fights! Stunts! – 2nd Unit Shooting’. The theatrical trailer is additionally included, plus a five minute introduction to the Director’s Cut feature by Clive Barker himself and last but absolutely not least, we are treated to an audio commentary track with writer/director Clive Barker and moderated by Mark Alan Miller.
