Carmen Electra, Shannon Elizabeth, Anna Faris, Regina Hall, Cheri Oteri, Marlon Wayans, and Shawn Wayans star in this outrageous parody slasher – now on 4K Ultra HD for the first time. As the body count rises, this hilarious satire delivers gut-busting shocks and side-splitting laughs.

The original ‘Scary Movie’ offers a vulgar and twisted parody of your favorite late ‘90s horror films that sees a group of teens become targets of a familiar masked killer a year after accidently killing someone on a drunken night of partying. As the bodies begin to pile up and the terror and hilarity increase, it soon becomes a battle of wits and idiocy as these clueless teenagers must try and uncover the killer’s identity before they all end up on the chopping block with their friends.

Directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans and written by Shawn Wayans & Marlon Wayans & Buddy Johnson & Phil Beauman and Jason Friedberg & Aaron Seltzer, Keenen does a solid job in the director’s role for ‘Scary Movie’ guiding along the original ride with over the top fun and silliness at every turn. The film’s cast includes Jon Abrahams, Carmen Electra, Shannon Elizabeth, Anna Faris, Kurt Fuller, Regina Hall, Lochlyn Munro, Cheri Oteri, Dave Sheridan, Marlon Wayans and Shawn Wayans, with all nicely contributing to the goofy fun throughout.

Twenty-six years and five sequels later, the original ‘Scary Movie’ released in 2000 is still the most amusing, clever and entertaining installment in the parody franchise. Loaded with nonstop hilarity, twisted and raunchy fun that jabs at everything from Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer to The Matrix and many more as a group of clueless teens become prey to a killer who knows about their dark secret. Naturally as is the case with films like this not much of it really adds up or makes sense when all is said and done, and honestly it really doesn’t matter.

This is definitely not a film that’s about a clever plot or its ability to connect the dots in a complex or unique way, instead going all out at every turn to take things as far into the realm of goofy idiocy as possible with hilarious over the top jokes and it never stops having fun with it throughout its refreshingly brief runtime which clocks in at just under ninety minutes. The film fits perfectly within the Wayans family’s style for satire and marks a solid and incredibly funny follow-up to their equally amusing ‘Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood’ and both stand out as memorable theatre outings for myself as a teenager and young adult. If you enjoy a great satirical romp that never bothers to play by the rules and never hesitates to just go to unexpected and hilariously over the top places then the original ‘Scary Movie’ is still one of the best of the era and if you’ve never seen it and aren’t easily offended it’s well worth giving a whirl.

[4K Ultra HD Review] Scary Movie (2000) Steelbook; Now Available From Paramount 4

The original ‘Scary Movie’ from 2000 returns home, now available in 4K UHD for the first time in a Limited Edition 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray + Digital combo pack from Paramount Home Entertainment. The release features the film in a full Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR10 that marks a significant improvement over the ancient Blu-ray release which was incredibly underwhelming (the screencaps included in the review are from the original Blu-ray which is included in the release as well and is clearly a bit ancient based on the fact it still features the Disney/Dimension promo bits) so rest assured the 4K presentation is a definite upgrade, but it still falls a bit short in comparison to other 4K debuts, especially ones from this era.

Fortunately, the big improvements over the Blu-ray will still make this one worth adding to your collection if you’re a big fan that would like a far more solid offering for this modern comedy classic of sorts. The release arrives home in collectible Steelbook packaging and also includes a few previously released extras on the Blu-ray disc. For those considering a purchase it will be up to each if the video presentation (and audio to some degree) are worth the upgrade if you already own the Blu-ray, although I wouldn’t be surprised if many will find it worthwhile considering the mediocre Blu-ray’s disappointing video offering. If you’re planning to pick up a copy it should be worth it for diehard fans, especially if you can find it at the right price for your budget.

VIDEO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of the original ‘Scary Movie’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition video presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR10 presented in its original 2.39:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation marks a pretty significant improvement over the underwhelming Blu-ray release (which is also included here) and while not perfect it offers a notably sharper, cleaner and crisper video presentation that is a massive upgrade by comparison. Details are capable throughout and character faces and clothing along with other key objects focused upon hold up without any trouble and most backgrounds look very nice in addition, although there are times where some of the background depth and clarity along with occasional colors don’t resolve quite like they should. The Dolby Vision HDR offers some minor upgrades for color that occasionally stand out and black levels are rich, deep and solid. Overall, this is a pretty nice Ultra High Definition presentation that may not be flawless but definitely blows the older Blu-ray out of the water and should make a welcome upgrade for fans.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a 5.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. This multichannel soundtrack sounds quite good and it delivers a clean, sharp and fairly immersive audio presentation throughout. It takes advantage of all five available channels to send music, action, satire, crowd and vehicle effects, along with plenty more moving throughout the various speakers whenever reasonable, and always making certain that any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously remain clean and audible every step of the way. Overall, this is a solid 5.1 DTS-HD MA soundtrack that holds up nicely and while perhaps not outstanding, it gets the job done and should satisfy fans.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of the original ‘Scary Movie’ features a few previously released extras which can all be found on the included Blu-ray disc. Included is a collection of ‘Additional Scenes’ from the movie (running approximately 7 minutes altogether), along with a ‘Behind-The-Scenes’ Featurette’ (approximately 7 minutes), the film’s ‘Theatrical Trailer’ (2 minutes) and a ‘Movie Showcase’ option which is simply a compilation of key scenes from the movie.
