Synopsis:

On the turbo-charged streets of Los Angeles, every night is a championship race. With nitro-boosted fury, Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel), rules the road, turning all his challengers into dust. He and his rival, Johnny Tran (Rick Yune), are the boldest, the baddest and the best. Now, there’s new rage on the road. They know he’s tough, they know he’s fast, but what they don’t know is that he’s a speed-crazed detective (Paul Walker) with enough drive and determination to come out the winner. With intense full-throttle action, awesome high-speed stunts and full-on, pedal-to-the-metal intensity, THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS puts you in the driver’s seat and dares you to exceed all limits.

‘The Fast and the Furious’ follows an up-and-coming detective named Brian as he goes undercover in the underworld world of LA street racing to uncover a group of thieves robbing freight trucks while moving. Befriending local street racing icon Dominic Toretto which allows him a better look at the intricacies of the environment, things become more complicated when Brian falls for Dom’s sister Mia. As time runs out and the truck drivers being hit begin to take matters into their own hands, Brian will have to race to uncover the true culprits behind these jobs, yet his infatuation with Mia might just be clouding his judgment.

Directed by Rob Cohen from a screenplay by Gary Scott Thompson and Erik Bergquist and David Ayer, Cohen does a great job in the director’s chair for ‘The Fast and the Furious’ guiding along the original installment with fast paced fun, tension, humor and heart. The film’s cast includes Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Rick Yune, Ja Rule, Chad Lindberg, Johnny Strong, Matt Schulze, Ted Levine and more, with most offering capable or at the very least fitting performances in each of their roles throughout that regularly contribute to the fun.

The film that kicked off a massive franchise spanning eleven films to date with at least one more (and a series) on the way, ‘The Fast and the Furious’ was first unleashed upon moviegoers in the summer of 2001 and quickly gained a dedicated fanbase with its thrilling fun, flashy style and ability to keep you smiling throughout as things rarely slow down as it continually builds momentum from the tense opening heist sequence. Something about this series has always just worked and the chemistry of the actors (starting here with Diesel and Walker) only helps to make this series that much more enjoyable.

The film still holds up in most respects and never seems to lose its ability to deliver a thoroughly fun and exciting ride from start to finish, even after enough repeat viewings that I’ve lost count and is still one of the best installments in the franchise; although to be fair I can’t say there’s been a single movie in the series that I haven’t enjoyed. If you enjoy a simple, fun and thrilling ride that has plenty of action, heart, fast cars and a bit of amusing cheesiness on hand but never got around to giving this one a shot, I would certainly encourage doing so whenever possible.

The original modern classic that started it all ‘The Fast and the Furious’ returns home newly remastered with a fresh 4K release that delivers a gorgeous full Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision that looks great and is paired with a wildly enjoyable and hard hitting Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that marks a nice little upgrade from the previous 4K editions that featured HDR10 and DTS-X audio. The new 25^th Anniversary Edition also features one all-new extra in addition to the previously included collection of extras on top of it and is available both in a Limited Edition Steelbook or in standard packaging which ships with a slip cover and is the version the studio sent over for review.

While I haven’t had the chance to check out the previous 4K release it’s safe to say that I can’t imagine this one possibly looking or sounding much better than it does here with Dolby Vision and Atmos, and if you’re a fan that doesn’t already own the movie in the format then this new edition is highly recommended and surely the way to go. If you happen to already own one of the previous 4K UHD releases then it’ll be up to each individual as to whether the Dolby Vision and Atmos upgrades and the sole new extra justify a double dip.

VIDEO:

The 25^th Anniversary 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘The Fast and the Furious’ features a newly remastered full 2160p Ultra High Definition video presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR10 presented in a 2.35:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks spectacular and delivers a clean, sharp and filmic presentation that’s richly detailed from start to finish and never suffers from any notable issues to be uncovered throughout. Details are marvelous across the board and everything from character faces and attire to the specifics of vehicles and backgrounds shine. The Dolby Vision HDR perfects various tidbits throughout with paint on cars and the green undercarriage lights looking gorgeous, along with backgrounds and more, while black levels are deep, rich and rewarding. Overall, this is a wonderful Ultra High Definition presentation that holds up splendidly and looks great throughout, while also benefiting nicely from the new Dolby Vision upgrade.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation. This multichannel soundtrack is nothing short of magnificent in its own right and it offers a clean, crisp and insanely aggressive audio presentation throughout. It constantly takes advantage of all seven available channels in order to send a whirlwind of activity zipping throughout the various speakers including music, vehicle and action effects and a great deal more, while never resulting in any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously becoming distorted or negatively impacted in the process. Overall, this is a spectacular Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that fires on all cylinders and repeatedly contributes a great deal of additional fun to the experience.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The 25^th Anniversary 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘The Fast and the Furious’ features one brand new extra along with numerous previously released bonus features. The newly included extra is ‘Riding a Legacy: 25 Years of Fast’ (running approximately 27 minutes in length), along with the previously released extras including an ‘Audio Commentary with Director Rob Cohen’, plus a collection of ‘Deleted Scenes with optional Commentary by Rob Cohen’ (running approximately 6 minutes altogether), in addition to some other outtakes and extra footage including ‘More Than Furious’ (2 minutes) and ‘Hot Off the Street’ (5 minutes).
