Synopsis:

With the Yellowstone Ranch behind him, Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals. Combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana, he and his teammates must balance family, duty and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence.

The debut season of ‘Marshals’ rejoins Kayce Dutton some time after the events of ‘Yellowstone’ as he and his son are living together at East Camp after a family loss. Struggling to find a purpose after tragedy, Kayce is soon convinced by his old teammate from his service time to join the of U.S. Marshals unit that he now leads. Before long Kayce finds himself back in the mix but will be tested when he is forced to try and balance a new career with family and other obligations as well as old matters from his days in service that have been lingering ever since.

‘Marshals’ was created for television by Spencer Hudnut and picks up after the events of the ‘Yellowstone’ series. ‘Marshals’ stars Luke Grimes (Eddington), Logan Marshall-Green (The Odyssey), Arielle Kebbel (I Can Only Imagine 2), Ash Santos (TV’s Mayor of Kingstown), Tatanka Means (Killers of the Flower Moon), Brecken Merrill (TV’s This is Us), Mo Brings Plenty (Jurassic World: Dominion) and Gil Birmingham (Wind River) who each offer generally solid and capable performances in their roles that help to keep the series moving along nicely.

The debut season of ‘Marshals’ invites viewers to reunite with Kayce Dutton after the events of the flagship series ‘Yellowstone’ as he and his son Tate must try and find a way to move on following a tragic loss. As Kayce finds a purpose in joining an elite team of Marshals led by his old military teammate, his son puts his efforts into keeping his mother’s legacy alive and raising awareness about those responsible. In addition to Kayce and Tate, the spin-off series also features other ‘Yellowstone’ key characters Thomas Rainwater and Mo whose own pursuits and headaches often intertwine with Kayce who is all too willing to offer a helping hand when possible. The series may be a follow-up to ‘Yellowstone’ although this is a very different type of series to say the least and while the original show was more of a neo-western drama with ongoing storylines, ‘Marshals’ follows a formula that’s more in line with police procedurals.

Ongoing storylines are still frequently mixed in and tend to play a part in the entire season while taking a backseat to the more typical case of the week approach. It’s an interesting way to approach the follow-up series and much of the time it works fairly well, yet it also causes it to rarely feel in the same tone and vibe of the bigger universe, not to mention drastically taming down the language and other elements as it also marks the first series in the franchise to debut primarily on network television. If you enjoyed the series that started it all and also appreciate network procedurals then ‘Marshals’ should have plenty to keep you invested, yet those expecting a direct sequel will probably have far more mixed opinions.

The first season of ‘Marshals’ comes home on Blu-ray in the 3-disc ‘Marshals: Season One’ Blu-ray set which features full high definition presentations on all 13 episodes of the debut season that look pretty great as a whole and they’re each capably paired with immersive and solid multichannel Dolby TrueHD soundtracks that should have fans of the spinoff who would love to physically own the first season pleased. The season set is absent of any extras, yet that shouldn’t dissuade those who merely want to collect the series or the overall ‘Yellowstone’ universe as a whole on Blu-ray. If you’re already considering a purchase and are a fan of the series then this season set is recommended, but for those who haven’t yet had the chance to give it a whirl and aren’t intent on owning every season of every series I would recommend checking it out before making a purchase.

VIDEO:

The Blu-ray release of ‘Marshals: Season One’ features a full 1080p High Definition presentation with a 2.00:1 aspect ratio on every episode of the debut season. The video presentations look very good as a whole and they deliver sharp, clean and capable presentations on every episode that are absent of any notable troubles or issues to be located along the way. Detail is great throughout and everything from character specifics to the action sequences and the gorgeous views of the sprawling landscapes hold up well, while colors are mostly solid and black levels are sufficiently deep and clean. Overall, these are very nice High Definition presentations very much in line with the look of other Blu-ray releases for Taylor Sheridan related series and fans should be largely satisfied with the results.

AUDIO:

The Blu-ray release features a 5.1 channel Dolby TrueHD soundtrack on all 13 Season One episodes. These multichannel soundtracks make a nice complement to the series and offer some notable immersion and extra tension to the viewing experience. They regularly utilize all five available channels in order to send music, action and nature related effects including shootouts, weather events and more whipping throughout the various speakers whenever appropriate, while always making certain that any dialogue and other audio elements remain clean and fully discernable throughout. Overall, these are solid 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtracks that do their job well and shouldn’t disappoint.
