Synopsis:

After breaking the mysterious “One Wish Willow” to win his crush’s heart, a hopeless romantic finds himself getting exactly what he asked for but soon discovers that some desires come at a dark, sinister price.

‘Obsession’ tells the haunting story of a young hopeful romantic named Bear who is head over heels in love with his friend Nikki who he doesn’t believe shares his feelings, even if he’s too afraid to actually tell her how he feels. Planning to finally tell her the truth one evening, he backs out once again after encouragement to stay quiet from his other friends, but after purchasing a ‘one wish willow’ at a local specialty shop he uses it to wish for her to love him more than anyone else in the world. But unfortunately for both of them it soon seems that the trinket indeed works, and with terrifying results as Nikki soon becomes increasingly obsessed with him at a dangerous level.

Written and directed by Curry Barker (Milk & Serial) who does a marvelous job at the helm of ‘Obsession’ marking his true feature length debut and he guides along the unsettling tale with heart, style and a unique look. The film’s cast includes Michael Johnston (TV’s Teen Wolf), Inde Navarrette (Trap House), Cooper Tomlinson (TV’s Dutton Ranch), Megan Lawless (The Death That Awaits) and Andy Richter (80 For Brady) and nearly all offer solid if not noteworthy performances in each of their roles that help this one to work so well.

‘Obsession’ is an unsettling, bleak and impressively crafted tale that offers a modern story that’s shot in an intricate and unique manner that we don’t see nearly as much these days, with some spurts of black humor and gore along the way that often keep you from knowing what exactly is approaching. In this curious time of movie releases it’s often a random chance of what will explode or crumble at the box office, but I certainly never expected a dark, bleak and unsettling horror film such as this to not only perform well but still be pulling in big bucks after its home entertainment release, although it’s never a bad sign for horror and it seems safe to say that filmmaker Curry Barker is one to watch for fellow genre fans and I personally can’t wait to see what comes next.

Not only is ‘Obsession’ notable for its success and the attention it’s managed to give to this filmmaker who was largely unknown to most prior, but the memorable and fully dedicated performances from just about the entire cast does wonders in making this click like it does, because this immensely human and personal story could just as easily be a humorous mess without the right folks in these roles. The film is also shot in a unique manner which we don’t tend to see in blockbusters (let’s face it, at this point this one is a blockbuster) but contributes a more intimate and personal vibe that’s incredibly specific with its shot angles and locations, while it also lingers unexpectedly at times to shake up your anticipation. Add to that an almost neon-like tinge to the whole film and it quickly stands out in the best way possible.

Overall, ‘Obsession’ delivers a dark, haunting and unnerving tale that’s beautifully crafted in style, appearance and tone, and with a stellar cast that offers some spectacular performances capable of backing it up; also introducing a notable and fresh horror filmmaker in newcomer Curry Barker who will certainly be worth keeping an eye on in the years to come. ‘Obsession’ is definitely recommended for anyone that is intrigued and doesn’t mind some dark subject matter revolving around what’s basically the equivalent of sexual assault and taking over a woman’s body against her will, as well as featuring at least a couple fairly grisly and gnarly moments. If you’re not easily bothered or offended, or are a genre fan that simply hasn’t had the chance to see it yet, then you’ll probably want to make sure not to miss this one and make up your mind on whether it lives up to hype. At the very least it should be well worth your time and the price of a rental to give a chance.

VIDEO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Obsession’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10, presented in its original 1.50:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks fantastic and delivers a sharp, clean and richly detailed presentation from start to finish that’s absent of any notable troubles to be uncovered throughout. Detail is tremendous on character specifics, unsettling and darkly lit moments and gore, while the Dolby Vision HDR offers noticeable improvements in the neon like colors and other tidbits, and black levels are capably dark, deep and rich throughout. Overall, this is a wonderful Ultra High Definition presentation that never underwhelms or disappoints and fans as well as newcomers should be extremely pleased with the results.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation. This multichannel soundtrack offers a crisp, clean and often fairly immersive audio presentation throughout. It utilizes all seven available channels in order to send some eerie noises, music and crowd chatter, along with more throughout the various speakers whenever appropriate, while never allowing any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously to become distorted or negatively impacted in the process. Overall, this is a great Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that delivers in every way tasked of it while consistently complementing the eerie tale.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Obsession’ includes a couple enjoyable extras. Included on the release is an ‘Audio Commentary with Director/Writer/Editor Curry Barker’, in addition to the Behind the Scenes Featurette ‘Obsession Unleashed’ (running approximately 19 minutes in length) which includes interviews/comments with the cast and crew, plus behind the scenes footage and more.
