Synopsis:

Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore star together in one of the funniest romantic comedies ever. Henry (Sandler) lives an enviable life in a Hawaiian paradise, spending every night with a beautiful tourist in search of an island fling. It’s a sweet life with no strings attached…until he meets Lucy (Barrymore). He and Lucy hit it off from the get-go, but the next day she acts like she doesn’t know him. Has his karma come around to kick him in the butt or what? Actually, Lucy has short-term memory loss so every night all memory of her day is erased. But a man in love will go to any lengths to win over the girl of his dreams, and if that means having to find imaginative ways of doing it over again every day, then Henry’s up for the challenge.

’50 First Dates’ joins Henry, a single man living and working in Hawaii who spends his days working with sea life at the local park while lying his way into one fling after another with random gorgeous tourists at night. But when Henry meets Lucy he immediately feels something different and a random interaction turned into hours together has him rethinking his ways. But when Henry realizes the next day that Lucy suffers short term memory loss from an accident, he becomes intent to win her over day after day in the hope that she might eventually remember him. Now Henry will have to decide if it’s worth fighting for a relationship that reboots daily and if he is truly up for the challenge.

Directed by Peter Segal (Tommy Boy, Grudge Match) from a screenplay written by George Wing, Segal does a great job at the helm of ’50 First Dates’ guiding along the comedic fun with heart and plenty of visual beauty on top of it. The film’s cast includes Adam Sandler, Drew Barrymore, Rob Schneider, Sean Astin, Amy Hill, Blake Clark and Dan Aykroyd, along with more and the majority each deliver capable and fitting performances for the most part that contribute to the fun and laughs throughout.

’50 First Dates’ might just be one of the Adam Sandler’s more endearing comedy films arriving during the height of his popularity. Initially released in early 2004, it still holds up rather well more than twenty years later (at least for the most part) for those who were fans to begin with of this quirky comedic tale of love in a Groundhog Day fashion. As someone who spent his teenage years going to see and often revisiting Sandler films like ‘Billy Madison’, ‘Happy Gilmore’ and ‘Bulletproof’ it’s safe to say that I enjoy the man’s brand of goofy comedy and ’50 First Dates’ excels in that department, while also offering a surprisingly sweet and heartfelt story to back it up.

Sandler and Barrymore have great chemistry and it was clear from ‘The Wedding Singer’ that the two clicked rather capably and ’50 First Dates’ cements that nicely, while also featuring a nice supporting cast on top of it and Sean Astin still steals just about every scene he occupies. If you’ve never had the pleasure of this one but are a fan of Adam Sandler’s unique style of over the top goofy comedy then I would strongly encourage giving ’50 First Dates’ a whirl because you might just be pleasantly surprised with how fun and heartfelt this one manages to be.

’50 First Dates’ brings the humorous and romantic fun home in 4K for the first time ever courtesy of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment and the film’s UHD debut features a spectacular new Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR10 approved by director Peter Segal that looks truly marvelous. The wonderful 4K video presentation is perfectly paired with a fresh Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that adds some immersion to the tale and together they have the romantic comedy looking and sounding better than most fans probably imaged ever being the case. The release also includes a notable collection of extras packed with tons of previously released goodies and if you’ve ever wanted to own this film but never got around to it, I’d say this is just about the perfect opportunity to add it to your collection. Many diehard fans who do own it will probably also want to consider upgrading because the impressive video and audio upgrades certainly aren’t underwhelming in the slightest.

VIDEO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ’50 First Dates’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10, presented in its original 2.39:1 Aspect Ratio and approved by director Peter Segal. The video presentation looks incredibly good and it offers a clean, sharp and beautifully detailed presentation from start to finish that never suffers from any unexpected issues arising along the way. Detail is great on everything from character specifics and interiors to the expansive, luscious landscapes and backgrounds on display throughout and the Dolby Vision HDR improves numerous elements throughout including bits of clothing and the blues and greens of the surroundings, while black levels are deep, rich and problem free. Overall, this is a fantastic Ultra High Definition presentation that looks marvelous at every turn and should easily thrill fans.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack (as well as the original Theatrical audio presented in 5.1 DTS-HD MA). Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation. This multichannel soundtrack contributes some nice immersion and delivers a clean, crisp and capable audio presentation throughout. It repeatedly takes advantage of all seven available channels in order to send music, weather and nature related effects, plus a fair amount more throughout the various speakers whenever appropriate, and never causing any dialogue or other audio elements that may be occurring simultaneously to become negatively impacted along the way. Overall, this is a pretty great Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that does its job well and consistently adds to the fun.
