Synopsis:

THEY WILL KILL YOU unleashes a blood-soaked, high-octane horror-action-comedy in which a young woman must survive the night at the Virgil, a demonic cult’s mysterious and twisted death-trap of a lair, before becoming their next offering in a uniquely brazen, big screen battle of epic kills and wickedly dark humor.

‘They Will Kill You’ joins a young woman fresh out of prison who takes a job as a maid working at a luxurious and selective building known as The Virgil. As she arrives and is shown her room among the other staff she finds herself viciously attacked by a group of residents that night. Utilizing her ability to fight with the best of them she quickly takes them all down, but it would seem this is only the beginning and that the entire building is a front for a deadly cult that’s determined to make her their next sacrifice. Now she’ll have to fight her way through a plethora of individuals if she hopes to stand any chance of surviving the night.

Directed by Kirill Sokolov (No Looking Back, Why Don’t You Just Die!) from a screenplay written by Kirill Sokolov & Alex Litvak (Predators), Sokolov does a magnificent job at the helm of ‘They Will Kill You’ guiding along the bloody and humorous ride with plenty of style and excitement around each corner. The film’s cast includes Zazie Beetz (Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die), Myha’la (Dead Man’s Wire), Paterson Joseph (Wonka), Tom Felton (Altered), Heather Graham (Suitable Flesh), and Patricia Arquette (TV’s Severance), with nearly all delivering fully capable and solid performances in their roles throughout that only enhance the fun.

‘They Will Kill You’ is a wildly brutal, blood-drenched and darkly hilarious ride into a luxurious New York building that holds a dark secret. It quickly gets moving and then takes the viewer along for a nearly nonstop gory showdown of combat, viciousness and blood drenched chaos, while also serving up more than a surprise or two along the way that only helps to make things even more engaging and tense as the story progresses and the perfectly gnarly craziness is consistently amplified along with it.

In addition to the fun and clever story itself and the solid guidance of director Kirill Sokolov, one of the biggest strengths of ‘They Will Kill You’ is easily the impressive and fully dedicated performance by Zazie Beetz who is spectacular at every turn, with a splendid ferocity that fits perfectly in order to provide a character that you can easily root for once she starts hacking people to pieces in one creative and gnarly way after another. Never hesitating to take things to extreme and hilariously twisted and over the top levels while perfectly utilizing the expansive location where everything plays out, it always keeps the fun coming at lightning speed, with plenty of dark humor, insanity and gore sprinkled throughout for good measure.

Overall, ‘They Will Kill You’ is an insanely fun, over the top and blood-soaked ride that quickly gets moving and nary backs off once it does, delivering a brutally violent, beautifully shot and unapologetically ridiculous good time with a wicked sense of humor on top of it, and a truly dedicated and physically aggressive performance by Zazie Beetz repeatedly complements it all throughout, as does the careful guidance of director Kirill Sokolov. ‘They Will Kill You’ definitely won’t be for everyone, but if you’re a genre fan that already has your attention piqued this one is very highly recommended. If you missed the film during its theatrical run and are hesitant to blindly purchase a copy it’s definitely worth renting at the very least, and HBO Max subscribers can also stream it at no additional cost as of the time of this writing.

VIDEO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘They Will Kill You’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10, presented in its original 2.20:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks great and it provides a clean, sharp and richly detailed presentation from start to finish that’s absent of any noticeable troubles or faults to be uncovered along the way. Detail is marvelous on character specifics, the expansive maze-like interior of the central building where it all plays out and the blood-soaked carnage and violent chaos, while the Dolby Vision HDR fine tunes various tidbits such as blood, clothing and more and black levels are rewardingly deep and rich without any problems. Overall, this is a fantastic Ultra High Definition presentation that holds up extremely well throughout and should easily excite fans and first time viewers.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation. This multichannel soundtrack is a great deal of fun and it offers a clean, crisp and hard hitting audio presentation throughout. It repeatedly takes advantage of all seven available channels in order to send a whirlwind of action effects, group noise/chatter, sprinklers pouring and plenty more whipping throughout the various speakers at every fitting opportunity, while always making certain that any dialogue or other audio elements occurring simultaneously remain clean, sharp and perfectly audible throughout. Overall, this is a solid Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that contributes plenty of extra fun and excitement to the viewing experience.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘They Will Kill You’ features a few entertaining extras in the way of Behind the Scenes Featurettes that include interviews/comments with the cast and crew, plus behind the scenes footage and more. The included Featurettes are ‘Director’s Log: The Making of They Will Kill You’ (running approximately 7 minutes in length), ‘Developing The Virgil’ (running approximately 8 minutes), ‘Asia Reaves’ Attacks’ (approximately 7 minutes) and ‘Crafting Carnage’ (5 minutes).
