Synopsis:

Fearlessly hurtling down the track, careening around, over and through the competition in his thundering Mach 5, Speed Racer (Emile Hirsch) was born to race cars. But when Speed turns down a lucrative offer from Royalton Industries, he not only infuriates the company’s maniacal owner (Roger Allam) but uncovers a terrible secret–some of the biggest races are being fixed by a handful of ruthless moguls! The only way for Speed to save his family’s business and the sport he loves is to beat Royalton at his own game. With the support of his family (John Goodman and Academy Award winner Susan Sarandon) and his loyal girlfriend, Trixie (Christina Ricci), Speed teams with his one-time rival–the mysterious Racer X (Matthew Fox)–to win the race that took his brother, Rex Racer’s, life: the death-defying, cross-country rally known as The Crucible.

‘Speed Racer’ follows the thrilling life and talents of the titular character who hails from the Racer family that has racing in their blood through and through. As Speed grows and finds his talents behind the wheel, he soon becomes one of the more talented stars on the track as he tears past competitors in his trusty Mach 5. But when Speed refuses to go against his beliefs and join with one of the most influential racing companies around he discovers the more unfortunate side of the sport and soon finds those in power trying to repeatedly thwart his success. Determined to prove himself and earn a spot in the race to end all races, Speed will have to show his prowess by competing in the same dangerous cross-country rally that took his brother’s life years prior.

The live-action ‘Speed Racer’ movie was written and directed by The Wachowskis who do a tremendous job of guiding along the tremendously fun ride and bringing the animated series to spectacular life, showcasing their clear love of the property at every turn. The film’s notable cast includes Emile Hirsch, Christina Ricci, John Goodman, Susan Sarandon, and Matthew Fox who each offer fully capable performances and have no hesitation diving entirely into the iconic roles and making them work remarkably well.

‘Speed Racer’ first raced into theaters in 2008 and was met with surprisingly underwhelming results, although as a fan of the series as a kid and of ‘The Matrix’ trilogy that The Wachowskis so perfectly crafted I must admit that I’ve always appreciated this film a great deal. Even with my love of it, I hadn’t had the opportunity to revisit it in many years and I honestly forgot just how much of a blast it really is; bringing the cartoon series to glorious life and delivering what is essentially a cartoon with real people inserted, this feature length adaptation repeatedly shows its love for the property and serves up a consistently fun, thrilling and goofy ride that has doesn’t lack for anything that fans of the series might be hoping for from it and delivers everything they should desire in spades.

If you’re a fan of the classic ‘Speed Racer’ series in which the film is based on that’s never had the pleasure of this live-action take on the property then I would strongly urge you to go out of your way to give it a shot at your earliest convenience, especially with it now available in 4K at last and looking and sounding better than I could have hoped. This is one truly outstanding and just plain enjoyable ride that was disappointingly underappreciated for some time and is still just as much fun as ever.

The 2008 live-action ‘Speed Racer’ movie zips onto 4K Ultra HD for the first time ever courtesy of Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment and any fans of this immensely fun ride are in for quite the treat. The release offers up the film itself in a full Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10 that’s nothing short of stunning. The marvelous new video presentation is only further complemented by a wildly aggressive Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack (as well as the option to view with the original Theatrical soundtrack provided in 5.1 DTS-HD MA) and it’s safe to say that this movie has never looked or sounded even close to as spectacular as it does here. In addition to the outstanding video and audio it also includes some fun extras both new and old and if you’re a fan of this one that’s been hoping to see it granted a much-needed upgrade then this 4K release is just about guaranteed to blow you away and plaster a grin on your face; I can’t recommend it highly enough.

VIDEO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Speed Racer’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10, presented in its original 2.39:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks absolutely spectacular and delivers a wonderfully clean, sharp and colorful presentation from start to finish that never loses its way or suffers from any issues at any point. Detail is marvelous across the board and everything from characters to the racetracks, backgrounds and the rest of the colorful surroundings absolutely shine. The Dolby Vision HDR perfects the warm, vibrant colors throughout to the point where just about every moment pops with glaring, gorgeous coloring, and with deep, rich and seemingly endless black levels to further complement it. Overall, this is a magnificent Ultra High Definition presentation that impresses every step of the way and should thoroughly thrill fans.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack (as well as the original Theatrical audio presented in 5.1 DTS-HD MA). Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation. This multichannel soundtrack is equally terrific and it serves up a clean, crisp and wildly immersive audio presentation throughout. It constantly takes advantage of all seven available channels in order to send a whirlwind of activity whipping throughout the various speakers including music, cars, aircraft, action and racing effects, plus so much more, and always making certain that any simultaneously occurring dialogue or other audio elements remain clean and fully intelligible throughout. Overall, this is a phenomenal Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that repeatedly astounds and shouldn’t disappoint in the slightest.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Speed Racer’ features a nice helping of bonus content including some new and previously released supplements. Included on the release is ‘Fast | Future | Family: Revisiting Speed Racer’ which features The Wachowskis discussing and reflecting on the film after all of these years (running approximately 13 minutes in length), along with some other Featurettes and fun videos including ‘Spritle in the Big Leagues!’ (running approximately 14 minutes), ‘Speed Racer: Ramping Up!’ (approximately 10 minutes), ‘Speed Racer: Supercharged’ (16 minutes), ‘Speed Racer: Car-Fu Cinema’ (27 minutes), and ‘Speed Racer: Wonderful World of Racing – The Amazing Racer Family’ (21 minutes).
