‘The Bride!’ offers a new take on a pair of classic movie monsters as a lonely Frankenstein (“Frank”) arrives in 1930’s Chicago to plead for the help of groundbreaking scientist Dr. Euphronious who he believes may be the one person able to successfully create a companion for him. After digging up the body of a murdered young woman and revitalizing her, the pair of “monsters” soon embarks upon a journey of murder, violence and romance as they try to create their own life together while repeatedly being forced to deal with those who would rather see them eliminated.

Written and directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal (The Lost Daughter) who does a great job at the helm of ‘The Bride!’ guiding along the strange tale with some spectacular visuals and a fitting vibe, yet is largely unable to make the story work or connect as a whole. The film’s noteworthy cast includes Jessie Buckley (Hamnet), Christian Bale (Amsterdam), Peter Sarsgaard (September 5), Annette Bening (TV’s Dutton Ranch), Jake Gyllenhaal (The Covenant) and Penélope Cruz (Ferrari) who each deliver mostly solid and capable performances in their roles yet are still unable to save this one.

‘The Bride!’ is a strange, often unbalanced and baffling new take on the beloved Bride of Frankenstein tale that sends the iconic monster and his new bride to be on a journey ala Bonnie and Clyde throughout the 1930’s that’s filled with violence, chaos and even a weird focus on musical numbers that doesn’t quite seem to work, forming into a curious mashup of punk rock, gothic horror and classic gangster flicks with a bit of monster movie and romance thrown into the mix. Unfortunately it too frequently gets lost in the mix of everything and its odd eccentrics and tendency to constantly jump all over the place doesn’t help it to have the impact that it feels like it should.

On the other hand the film is also spectacular in other departments and delivers a consistently gorgeous visual look and style that’s rich with 1930’s splendor and an immaculately detailed recreation of the era throughout that merges with some neon-like colors and other tidbits to create something truly special, and with quite the talented cast to back it up including Jessie Buckley, Christian Bale and Annette Bening just for starters. It’s hard not to appreciate what Maggie Gyllenhaal is going for with ‘The Bride!’ and it’s very possible that many others will appreciate it far more than I did but it’s one that’s not likely to work for a good majority of moviegoers.

Overall, ‘The Bride!’ delivers a visually stunning and well-acted take on the classic tale that isn’t afraid to do something unique with the content but unfortunately is never able to make everything adequately click or really work and instead ends up tumbling into a confusing mess of a tale that stands out for its noteworthy look such as the gorgeous recreation of the 1930’s mixed with a punk rock edge, not to mention plenty of talented stars offering fully capable performances and the solid guidance of director Maggie Gyllenhaal, but sadly becomes too frequently lost within itself. If you’re a fan of the key cast or are thoroughly intent to check it out I would suggest renting it or giving it a whirl on streaming as opposed to blindly purchasing, yet for those on the fence or not overly intrigued already I would suggest skipping this one.

VIDEO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘The Bride!’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10, presented in its original 2.39:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks pretty fantastic altogether and it provides a sharp, clean and richly detailed presentation from start to finish that holds up well throughout even during the many notably dark sequences and never suffers from any unexpected issues along the way. Detail is terrific on characters, backgrounds and vehicles along with everything else, while the Dolby Vision HDR helps fine tune some colors throughout such as the neon glares and other tidbits; with deep, rich and problem free black levels. Overall, this is a great Ultra High Definition presentation that looks very good throughout and shouldn’t elicit any complaints from fans or newcomers.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation. This multichannel soundtrack delivers a clean, crisp and often fairly aggressive audio presentation throughout that nicely complements the capable video presentation. It frequently utilizes all seven available channels in order to send music, action and vehicle related effects, plus quite a bit more moving throughout the various speakers somewhat regularly and always ensuring that any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously remain clean and fully audible. Overall, this is a very solid Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that never underperforms or disappoints while adding some nice immersion to the experience.
