Rock Hudson, Angie Dickinson, Telly Savalas, Roddy McDowall, Keenan Wynn, and James Doohan star in the story of a young man’s first sexual explorations, which are threatened by a string of murders. In a California high school, a married coach and faculty advisor (Hudson) beds his female students and eventually has to kill several of them to keep them quiet. Ponce de Leon Harper (John David Carson), who is starting to get neurotic and suffer academically because of his lack of sex, lusts after his sexy new substitute teacher (Dickinson), who soon takes care of his problem.

Coaxing a hulking Mitchell-B25 airship into the sky from a short, 500-foot carrier runway on a bouncing sea is daunting and dangerous. Tougher still is doing it with a full load of bombs. But for Lt. Col. James Dolittle (Spencer Tracy) and the crewmen of 16 B-25s, that’s just the start of the mission. America’s first bold strike against the enemy mainland is underway. Oscar®-winning special effects recreate the squadron’s low-altitude, “hedgehopping” sweep over Japan in this action-packed and suspenseful saga of the attach that bolstered U.S. morale during the bleak early days of the Pacific war. The intensive training, the daring bombing run, the subsequent forced landings in China and the perilous trek to safety: all the valiant touchstones of the true-life raid are captured in a beloved classic whose other stars include Van Johnson, Robert Walker, and Robert Mitchum

Produced and directed by comedy veteran Bud Yorkin, Start the Revolution Without Me broke ground for a comedy revolution. It takes the tumultuous “let-them-eat-cake” days of the French Revolution and gives everyone a figurative pie in the face. The story begins when two sets of identical twins—one pair of bumbling peasants (Gene Wilder and Donald Sutherland) and one pair of arrogant aristocrats (also Wilder and Sutherland)—are separated at birth. Decades later, on the bloody eve of the French Revolution, a case of mistaken identity tosses the wrong brothers into the wrong lives. As the guillotine looms and the palace of Versailles descends into absolute chaos, these four unlikely heroes must navigate royal trysts, deadly duels, and a plot to overthrow King Louis XVI.

Swellegant and elegant. Deluxe and de-lovely. Cole Porter was the most sophisticated name in 20th-century songwriting. And to play him in this highly fictionalized biopic, Warner Bros. chose debonair icon Cary Grant. Alexis Smith plays the glamorous Linda, whose serendipitous meetings with Cole lead to a meeting at the altar. More than 20 Porter songs grace this tale of triumph and tragedy, with Grant lending his amiable voice to You’re the Top, Night and Day and more. Monty Woolley, a Yale contemporary of Porter, portrays himself. Jane Wyman, Ginny Simms, Eve Arden, and others provide vocals and verve, with a highlight being Mary Martin re-creating her Broadway debut performing “My Heart Belongs to Daddy.” Lights down. Curtain up! Meticulously restored from 4K scans of its original Technicolor® negatives, Cole Porter’s contributions to the Great American Songbook are yours to celebrate and enjoy Night and Day.

Reuniting Clark Gable and Joan Crawford for the eighth and final time, Strange Cargo stands as one of the most unusual and provocative films to be produced by M-G-M during its halcyon days. Frank Borzage brings his inspired directorial touch to this unique and atmospheric drama filled with adventure and romance. After escaping from a brutal penal colony in French Guiana, a group of convicts led by Verne (Gable) trek through a sweltering jungle toward uncertain freedom. Along the way, hard-boiled Julie (Crawford) joins the group which is guided—perhaps judged—by a quiet, enigmatic stranger (Ian Hunter). As exhaustion and danger threaten to overwhelm them, questions of guilt, faith, and redemption surface with striking emotional force. Featuring a standout supporting performance by Peter Lorre and moody cinematography that heightens the film’s dreamlike intensity, the film remains a fitting final pairing of Gable and Crawford and one of Frank Borzage’s most impressive directorial achievements.

Joan Crawford gives a striking performance in one of her most memorable roles, portraying Letty Lynton, a young woman caught in a web of love, betrayal, and resilience. In the high-stakes world of the 1930s social elite, Letty Lynton (Crawford) is a woman seeking an escape from a toxic, suffocating life in South America. Haunted by a volatile affair with the possessive Emile Renaul (Nils Asther), she flees toward New York, finding a chance at redemption—and true love—in the arms of the wealthy, earnest Jerry Darrow (Robert Montgomery) during a glamorous transatlantic crossing. But the past refuses to stay buried. When the ship docks, Emile is waiting with a blackmail scheme designed to destroy Letty’s future, forcing her to take matters into her own hands. Directed by Clarence Brown style and substance, critics and audiences embraced the film, which gave Crawford the opportunity to take advantage of sleek gowns provided by M-G-M’s famed designer Adrian. The acclaim for Letty Lynton, released only weeks before another impressive star turn in the studio’s Grand Hotel, firmly established Crawford status as a screen superstar.

Set during a languid season on Fire Island, Last Summer is a stark and unsettling coming of age drama that captures the disaffection and moral drift of the late 1960s with unflinching honesty. Directed by Frank Perry (Diary of a Mad Housewife) and adapted by Eleanor Perry from Evan Hunter’s provocative novel, the film follows four teenagers—played by Barbara Hershey, Richard Thomas, Bruce Davison, and Catherine Burns (in an unforgettable Oscar®-nominated performance)—whose summer of idle freedom and social detachment gradually gives way to tragedy. Shot in a naturalistic style, Last Summer eschews easy judgments, instead presenting a chilling examination of youthful entitlement and emotional void. Perry’s restrained direction and the cast’s fearless performances lend the film a haunting authenticity that resonates long after the final frame. Last Summer is one of the most powerfully daunting and uncompromising American films of its time. Long unavailable for viewing, Last Summer been meticulously restored on re-constructed especially for this Warner Archive Blu-ray presentation
