Synopsis:
A man claiming to be from the future (Sam Rockwell) recruits an unlikely group of diner patrons to join him on a genre-defying adventure to save humanity from the perils of social media brainrot and the impending AI apocalypse! From Oscar®-winning director Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean), GOOD LUCK, HAVE FUN, DON’T DIE is a comedic, kinetic, gonzo, world-ending adventure like nothing you’ve ever experienced.
‘Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die’ tells the unhinged tale of a man who arrives at a local restaurant claiming to be from the future with the purpose of gathering the right group of individuals to try and save the world from an AI apocalypse. After failing hundreds of times prior, the man joins forces with an odd collection of random folks and sets out once again to try and set things right. As the evening progresses and they begin to make some notable headway, it looks like this just may be the right group to change everything… well, maybe.
Directed by Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, The Weather Man) from a screenplay written by Matthew Robinson (Love and Monsters), Verbinski does a marvelous job at the helm of ‘Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die’ guiding along the crazy ride with style, heart and humor. The film’s notable cast includes Sam Rockwell (Jojo Rabbit), Haley Lu Richardson (TV’s The White Lotus), Michael Peña (A Working Man), Zazie Beetz (They Will Kill You), Asim Chaudhry (TV’s The Sandman) and Juno Temple (Roofman), with nearly all offering capable and fitting performances in each of their roles that contribute notably to the tale.
‘Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die’ is an absolute blast. A wildly odd, over the top and immensely clever ride that’s as weird and farfetched as it is timely and horrifyingly believable, not to mention fun, thrilling and quite funny. It introduces us to the collection of very different people involved and utilizes flashbacks and discussion to allow us better insight into the mindset and life of many of them only to throw them into some new dangerous and uncertain scenarios which helps you to actually care about each to some degree or another, and naturally a few of them far more than some others.
The film manages to offer one wild and crazy situation after another to throw this ragtag group of characters into as well as interspersed with flashbacks, with each situation and event even more outlandish than the last, yet somehow managing to make each of these crazy and ridiculous situations something that we could easily imagine becoming a reality in the foreseeable future if not already plausible and then it repeatedly develops unique ways to offer those scenarios to the audience in a way that’s both humorously over the top and terrifyingly realistic in the scope of our modern world. While some of the events and conflicts still seem like a reach in reality, many tend to seem far more likely than they should, or than they did even a handful of years previously.
Overall, ‘Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die’ is a clever, incredibly fun and in many ways shockingly plausible sci-fi ride that’s as crazy and over the top as it is relevant and even somewhat emotional at times. It’s a unique and very strange offering that’s beautifully guided along by director Gore Verbinski and his capable work behind the camera is repeatedly complemented by the stellar cast led by Sam Rockwell. ‘Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die’ is very highly recommended if you’re a fan of the director and/or cast, or if you tend to enjoy a truly weird yet very well done film with a lot to offer. While it’s a spectacular film and one of the most original outings of the year to date, those who aren’t fond of films that are overly weird and out there may not be quite as excited about this one as those that love them.
