Synopsis:

Trapped in their Hollywood Hills home, a family must fight for survival as a pack of savage coyotes closes in.

[Blu-Ray Review] Coyotes; Now Available From Aura – Decal 1

‘Coyotes’ joins screenwriter Scott along with his wife Liv and daughter Chloe as their wealthy neighborhood in the Hollywood hills turns into a battleground when a pack of bloodthirsty coyotes begin to aggressively attack the community. Beginning with a few small pets being slaughtered, the bloodshed quickly becomes more dangerous as the pack of coyotes begin to attack and slaughter various humans unwise enough to venture outside or careless enough to leave a door open. Before long Scott and his family end up in a fight for their lives as the coyotes become more brazen and fearless.

Directed by Colin Minihan (It Stains the Sand Red, Extraterrestrial) from a screenplay written by Tad Daggerhart (The Expendables 4) & Nick Simon (Cold Comes the Night), from a story by Daniel Meersand & Daggerhart and Simon, Minihan does a capable job at the helm of ‘Coyotes’ guiding along the bloody tale with humor and an almost goofy undertone. The film’s cast includes Justin Long (Barbarian), Kate Bosworth (House of Darkness), Mila Harris (No Exit), Katherine McNamara (TV’s Arrow), Brittany Allen (TV’s Dexter: Original Sin), Keir O’Donnell (Ambulance) and Norbert Leo Butz (A Complete Unknown), with most offering decent enough and at least fitting performances in each of their roles.

[Blu-Ray Review] Coyotes; Now Available From Aura – Decal 2

‘Coyotes’ is a fun, bloody and somewhat goofy look at chaos and panic that explodes in a Hollywood Hills neighborhood when a dangerous pack of coyotes start attacking the pets and people that reside there, all amid the backdrop of LA fires. Taking an almost satirical approach throughout in tone while still allowing many of the characters within to feel real and not overly idiotic or silly (with a few exceptions naturally) and balancing with a mildly believable concept of story before sending things entirely off the rails with more than enough gory chaos and fun to keep you from ever getting bored or uninterested.

There is a heavy CGI presence that is hard to ignore at times and some blatantly ridiculous moments that are difficult to swallow, yet it always knows exactly what type of film it wants to be and wisely never changes course along the way. While the key characters often remain generally believable in their actions and attitude, there are also a few quite colorful individuals that add to the humorous vibe and tone in a mostly amusing manner, with the shady neighbor and the pest control guy often standing out in that regard. It isn’t perfect and has its downsides, but it’s really a great deal of fun and utilizes all of the elements within to deliver a colorful and enjoyably over the top showdown between one group of neighbors and some bloodthirsty coyotes.

[Blu-Ray Review] Coyotes; Now Available From Aura – Decal 3

Overall, ‘Coyotes’ is an enjoyable ride that’s as bloody and violent as it is goofy and amusing, yet does suffer from some illogical choices, a mildly sloppy conclusion and some distracting CGI effects that hamper the overall quality. Fortunately a decent cast and director, paired with a somewhat believable and realistic concept and some over the top moments and characters help it to remain incredibly fun amid its faults. If you tend to enjoy a horror comedy that doesn’t take itself too seriously or are a fan of the key cast then ‘Coyotes’ is worth giving a shot. It may not be perfect and it struggles in some departments but the silly fun and carnage helps it to still prove worthwhile. Nonetheless I would encourage renting it before making a blind purchase just to be safe because it may not be one that everyone will love or want to repeatedly revisit.

VIDEO:

The Blu-ray release of ‘Coyotes’ features a full 1080p High Definition presentation with a 2.35:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks pretty nice as a whole and it delivers a generally clean, sharp and well-detailed presentation throughout that holds up capably in most respects but does suffer from a bit of banding visible on occasion. Detail is solid on characters, scenery and the expansive interiors of the Hollywood homes where much of the activity occurs, while colors are rich and vibrant and black levels are decent for the most part. Overall, this is a generally solid and capable high definition presentation that may not be flawless but gets the job done and looks great more often than not.

AUDIO:

The Blu-ray release features a 5.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. This multichannel soundtrack offers a clean, crisp and often hard hitting audio presentation that contributes nicely to the violent and amusing fun. It repeatedly utilizes all five available channels in order to send action and nature effects along with music, bits of chatter and more throughout the various speakers while never causing any dialogue or other simultaneously occurring audio elements to become distorted or rendered problematic in the process. Overall, this is a fun and capable 5.1 DTS-HD MA soundtrack that viewers should have plenty of fun with.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The Blu-ray release of ‘Coyotes’ features the sole extra ‘Meet the Pack: Behind the Scenes with the Makers’ (running approximately 19 minutes in length) which features interviews/comments with the cast and crew, plus behind the scenes footage and more.
