The iconic ‘80s television series ‘Knight Rider’ joins Michael Knight, a man who suffers a terrible accident and after being provided drastic reconstructive surgery is enlisted to help fight the battles and criminals that are disregarded or the police can’t handle along with his fast, nearly impenetrable car and friend K.I.T.T. as the two tackle some of the biggest threats imaginable. Along with the help of a couple close allies who share his secret and provide assistance and funding when needed, Michael is the one you call in when things seem impossible or the odds are stacked against you.

The series was created for television by Glen A. Larson and stars David Hasselhoff as our lead hero Michael Knight (as well as portraying a notable recurring villain in a few episodes) and William Daniels as the voice of K.I.T.T. although uncredited in the series by his own request. The series also stars Edward Mulhare as Devon, Michael’s reliable and helpful partner, while Patricia McPherson starred as the car’s chief technician Bonnie in season two before being replaced by Rebecca Holden in season three who portrays a similar character named April. Following some fan backlash and comments by Hasselhoff and Mulhare, McPherson returned as Bonnie in season three and remained for the rest of the series, with Holden being removed.

‘Knight Rider’ first debuted on NBC in the fall of 1982 and ran for a total of four seasons before concluding in the spring of 1986. The series delivered a fun, thrilling and beloved collection of adventures featuring a man who is given a second chance at life and provided one incredible and impressive car and a wealth of unique tools and gadgets to get things done when everything looks hopeless, not to mention with a unique personality and voice of its own which was always one of the biggest draws, especially for me as a kid watching the series in syndication.

It’s a solid series that bothers to put some real effort into making it look realistic and some clever editing balanced with real shots of the vehicle jumping combine to deliver a believable appearance that contributes enormously to the fun and excitement, especially during the numerous car chases and action sequences which still hold up in many respects far better than you might expect for a series that first debuted over four decades ago. It’s been many years since I’ve had the pleasure of revisiting the series but I can honestly say that it’s still a blast and remains immensely fun today after all of these years. It also features a great collection of guest stars including a young Jason Bateman, along with everyone from Phyllis Davis, Robert England and Ken Foree to Don King and many more.

The entire original ‘Knight Rider’ series speeds into your home in 4K courtesy of Universal Pictures Home Entertainment in the 21-disc ‘Knight Rider: The Complete Series’ 4K Ultra HD box set. The new 4K collection features all 90 episodes from all four seasons of the series in full Ultra High Definition with HDR-10 paired with DTS-HD MA soundtracks for each. It may not be utterly flawless, yet it still looks and sounds very good altogether and should have fans very excited. The set also includes the full ‘Knight Rider 2000’ TV Movie (although not in remastered 4K like the episodes) along with various other fun extras.

There are a few factors within that may not overly thrill the diehard fans though such as the two-part episodes all featuring the syndicated cuts instead of the full versions, although the rest of the episodes are in fact the complete and uncut versions curiously enough. The set arrives in a nice side slip case with individual season cases for each of the four seasons inside and no overlapping discs like you might find on similar series sets, especially from a few other studios. Fortunately even with a few missteps and imperfections throughout, this complete series collection still delivers nicely in most respects and for any dedicated fans who would love to own the beloved ‘80s series in UHD this release is recommended.

VIDEO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Knight Rider: The Complete Series’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with HDR-10, presented in its original 1.33:1 Aspect Ratio on every episode of the series. The video presentations look quite nice as a whole and deliver sharp, clean and filmic presentations for the majority of episodes that never suffer from any notable issues to be uncovered along the way, although a few are slightly less stellar than the majority. Detail is great on characters, surroundings and the various action and car chase sequences throughout. The HDR-10 enhances a few coloring aspects throughout such the red of the car’s lights and other tidbits, while black levels remain largely clean and problem free. Overall, these are solid Ultra High Definition presentations that hold up well for the most part and should have fans generally pleased.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a 2.0 DTS-HD Master Audio (primarily dual mono) soundtrack on all 90 episodes of the series. These lossless soundtracks sound pretty nice for the most part and aside from a few slightly tinny sounding moments in the earliest season or two, they offer clean, sharp and capable soundtracks throughout. They do a nice job of balancing the various audio elements within and everything from dialogue to music, action effects and the rest share the channel(s) without issue and never result in any simultaneously occurring dialogue or other audio elements contradicting or negatively impacting any others along the way. Overall, these are mostly very nice 2.0 DTS-HD MA soundtracks that may not be marvelous but do hold up capably most of the time and shouldn’t disappoint.
