‘Dirty Harry’ introduces viewers to hard as nails San Francisco cop “Dirty” Harry Callahan who must take on a serial Sniper that has started taking out random citizens throughout the city inciting panic and chaos. When the killer demands a ransom in order to stop his rampage, Harry willingly volunteers to make the drop, but when things take another dark turn and a young girl is taken and harmed by the psychotic killer, Dirty Harry will have to forget about playing by the rules of the law and get mean if he hopes to stop the man before anyone else suffers his wrath.

‘Dirty Harry’ is directed by Don Siegel from a screenplay penned by Harry Julian Fink, R.M. Fink, and Dean Riesner, and from a story by Harry Julian Fink and R.M. Fink; Siegel does a tremendous job guiding along the iconic police thriller with style, tension and even a touch of humor at times. The film’s cast includes Clint Eastwood in the title role, along with Andy Robinson, Harry Guardino, Reni Santoni, John Larch and John Vernon who each offer generally solid performances for the most part in their respective roles.

‘Dirty Harry’ was first unleashed upon unsuspecting moviegoers in 1971 and introduced viewers to a new kind of cop and a whole new type of action film that borrows elements from iconic westerns and takes the grit and danger to the city streets of San Francisco. The film still offers a wildly enjoyable, tense and brutal ride today, more than fifty years after it initially debuted. Its popularity led to the film evolving into a franchise, not to mention marking one of Eastwood’s most notable roles and even with its age this one still packs quite a punch even by today’s standards.

Even for a film that’s over half a century old ‘Dirty Harry’ never holds back and sends the gritty cop on a dangerous journey through one terrifying killer’s games and madness, while serving up plenty of tense action and bloody fun along the way. If you’re a fan of Clint Eastwood’s work or if you merely enjoy a fantastic gritty cop thriller but have never had the pleasure of ‘Dirty Harry’ then you should probably stop reading here and go rectify that; and what better way to do so than with this marvelous new 4K UHD release of the 1970’s classic.

‘Dirty Harry’ takes the fight into your home for the first time ever in 4K Ultra HD courtesy of Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment and was released alongside two other iconic Eastwood films also making their anticipated 4K UHD debuts: ‘Pale Rider’ (you can read my review of that 4K release here) and ‘The Outlaw Josey Wales’ (keep an eye out for my review coming soon).

‘Dirty Harry’ makes its 4K debut sporting a very nice full Ultra High Definition presentation with HDR-10 that has the beloved thriller looking better than ever. The notable new UHD presentation is further boosted by a hard-hitting new Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack as well as the option to view with the original Theatrical Soundtrack (presented in 2.0 DTS-HD split mono) and it’s safe to say that the iconic film has never looked or sounded better at home. The release also includes hours of enjoyable extras featuring a couple brand new Featurettes and fans of ‘Dirty Harry’ should be pretty thrilled with this stellar new 4K release. If you’re fully 4K capable and a fan who is already contemplating a purchase, then this one is highly recommended and definitely worth adding to your collection.

VIDEO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Dirty Harry’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with HDR-10 presented in the film’s original 2.39:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks pretty great altogether and offers a sharp, filmic and nicely detailed presentation from start to finish that’s absent of any unexpected issues arising throughout. Detail is wonderful on everything from character faces and clothing to the various external shots of the city, along with interior scenes and action sequences which all hold up remarkably well, while the HDR-10 complements many elements throughout from clothing to vehicles and more. Black levels are also rewardingly deep and rich for the most part. Overall, this is a very solid Ultra High Definition presentation that should easily excite fans of this iconic cop thriller.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack, as well as including the Original Theatrical Soundtrack which is presented in 2.0 (split mono) DTS-HD Master Audio with original effects and audio elements present for gunshots and all. Please note that in regard to the Dolby Atmos soundtrack this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation.

I viewed a good chunk of the film with both audio options to try and offer some insight on each; first off the new Dolby Atmos /TrueHD 7.1 soundtrack sounds tremendous for the format and takes full advantage of the immersion opportunities to send the score, along with gunshots and debris, plus plenty more zipping throughout the various speakers and never conflicting with any simultaneously occurring audio elements. The original theatrical soundtrack presented here in DTS-HD MA 2.0 is a real treat in its own right and while it lets go of the expanded immersion naturally, it also restores the original style and sounds, including the original effects on gunshots which sound noticeably enhanced and upgraded in the Atmos presentation and I believe the majority of the film’s releases over recent years. Overall, these are both very solid soundtracks and it’s a treat to have the option of both included; either one should satisfy fans, while it will merely be up to personal preference which you select.
