Synopsis:

With 1985’s Pale Rider, Clint Eastwood returned to the western genre with a vengeance as the movie became the highest grossing western of that decade. Eastwood, who also directed the hit film, plays a nameless stranger who rides into a small California gold rush town (and becomes known as the “Preacher”) where he finds himself in the middle of a feud between a mining syndicate and a group of independent prospectors.

‘Pale Rider’ tells the tale of a mysterious, unnamed stranger who arrives in a small gold rush town in California just when the people need him the most. After helping to even the odds when an average man is attacked, the stranger becomes known as the “Preacher” and soon discovers that the townsfolk are being harassed by a mining company that is intent to get rid of them in order to expand and further their work. But when this Preacher gives the prospecting locals a bit of hope and the will to stand up, tensions heat up further and begin building to a handful of violent showdowns that will likely help decide the town’s fate.

‘Pale Rider’ is directed by Clint Eastwood from a screenplay by Michael Butler and Dennis Shryack and Eastwood does a terrific job behind the camera guiding along the film with heart, tension and beauty, while also giving a ferocious performance in front of the camera in the film’s lead. In addition to Eastwood, the film’s cast also includes Michael Moriarty, Carrie Snodgress, Christopher Penn, Richard Dysart, Sydney Penny, Richard Kiel, Doug McGrath, and John Russell who each deliver largely solid and capable performances for the most part in their respective roles.

Marking Clint Eastwood’s return to Westerns and heating up the box office upon its release, ‘Pale Rider’ first debuted theatrically in 1985 and offered a powerful, touching and brutal tale of one kindhearted stranger who becomes engulfed in a conflict between local prospectors and a mining company and the film still provides a rewarding and memorable experience today; a full four decades later. Eastwood has always known what his fans wanted and never shied away from taking chances and unique roles, or for going back to the ones like this that he always manages to portray so flawlessly.

‘Pale Rider’ may not be one of Clint Eastwood’s absolute greatest films but it’s honestly still pretty great as a whole and manages to take a simple, yet powerful story and execute it splendidly while repeatedly honoring the westerns of old along its course, not to mention allowing Eastwood to revisit his iconic gruff gunfighter type role that never seems to get old. If you’re a fan of Eastwood’s films and especially his western outings but have somehow never had the pleasure of ‘Pale Rider’ then I would strongly encourage making a point of fixing that whenever possible because it’s a solid ride that fits nicely within the legendary actor’s career and is well worth checking out.

[4K Ultra HD Review] Pale Rider; Available April 29, 2025 From Warner Bros 4

‘Pale Rider’ comes home on 4K Ultra HD for the first time courtesy of Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment both in celebration of its fortieth anniversary and alongside the simultaneous 4K debuts of other Clint Eastwood gems ‘Dirty Harry’ and ‘The Outlaw Josey Whales’ (be sure to also keep an eye out for my reviews of those two releases coming soon). The new 4K UHD release of ‘Pale Rider’ delivers a very nice full Ultra High Definition presentation with HDR-10 that absolutely shines and is only further complemented by an immersive new Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack as well as the option to view with the original theatrical audio which is presented in 2.0 DTS-HD. If the spectacular new video and audio presentations alone weren’t quite enough to get your attention (although they probably were) the release also features hours of entertaining extras including a collection of brand new and previously released bonus material. To put it simply, this new 4K UHD edition of Clint Eastwood’s ‘Pale Rider’ does not disappoint and if you’re a fan that’s already contemplating a purchase then it’s definitely highly recommended.

VIDEO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Pale Rider’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with HDR-10 presented in the film’s original 2.39:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks spectacular altogether and it provides a clean, sharp and filmic presentation from start to finish that breathes some gorgeous new life into the ‘80s western while never suffering from any notable issues or troubles along the way. Detail is marvelous on everything from character faces, clothing and even Eastwood’s stubble, not to mention the beautiful backgrounds and pretty much everything else appearing onscreen at one point or another; a great example showcasing the detail is the way it differentiates the individual strands of hair on the top of the horse on the right of the screen at around eighteen minutes in. The HDR-10 benefits much of it by contributing more lifelike and vibrant coloring on backgrounds, pieces of clothing and more, while black levels and shadowing are deep, rich and very nice. Overall, this is a wonderful Ultra High Definition presentation that looks terrific at every turn and should absolutely thrill fans.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack, as well as the Original Theatrical Soundtrack which is presented in 2.0 DTS-HD Master Audio. Please note that in regard to the Dolby Atmos soundtrack this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation which is how I viewed the film as a whole before jumping around with the Theatrical option selected. The new Dolby Atmos /TrueHD 7.1 soundtrack sounds quite great as a whole and delivers a clean, crisp and often surprisingly immersive presentation that utilizes all seven available channels quite frequently in order to send music, action, nature effects and more throughout the various speakers without any issues or conflictions occurring along the way. Those preferring to view the film with the 2.0 DTS-HD MA Original Theatrical option shouldn’t be disappointed either and from what I was able to tell scanning through it sounds sharp, clean and rewarding as well. Overall, this is a very nice Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that immerses you within the western excitement and action, while also providing a notable secondary option to view with the original theatrical presentation in 2.0 DTS-HD; neither of which should disappoint fans.
