‘Galaxy Quest’ follows the cast of a popular, yet long-ago cancelled sci-fi series that are still trying to stay relevant by attending various conventions and other fan events for the sci-fi series that took their careers to new heights. But when a real interstellar race of individuals in need of some assistance protecting their people mistakes the broadcast of the show for “historical documents” and plead with lead star Jason Nesmith to help them believing him to be the character he plays, he soon enlists the entire lead cast of the series in a dangerous space-soaring adventure that will change each of them, assuming that they can survive the journey.

‘Galaxy Quest’ is directed by Dean Parisot from a screenplay written by David Howard and Robert Gordon, from a story by Howard; Parisot does a spectacular job at the helm guiding along the hilarious and visually stellar out of this world fun with heart and style. The film’s star-studded cast includes Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shalhoub, Sam Rockwell, Enrico Colantoni, Daryl Mitchell, Justin Long, Missi Pyle, and Rainn Wilson who each offer solid and fitting performances in their respective roles that help to keep the fun consistently working as marvelously as it does.

‘Galaxy Quest’ first soared into theaters Christmas day of 1999 and took viewers for a wildly enjoyable, heartfelt and humorous out of this world adventure that quickly became a fan favorite. Not just a clever comedy filled with plenty of rewarding laughs and fun, it perfectly balanced the comedic style with an exploration of struggling television actors trying to stay relevant, and a legit fantasy adventure rich with gorgeous effects and creatures, not to mention a stellar cast to help it all move along at a perfect pace and keep viewers from ever losing interest along the way.

‘Galaxy Quest’ is one of those rare gems that initially seemed to come out of nowhere and became a beloved movie for fans everywhere and one that only becomes even more enjoyable upon repeat viewings. If you’ve never had the pleasure of ‘Galaxy Quest’ but tend to enjoy a unique comedic adventure with a star-studded cast or if you’re simply a fan of the key cast alone, then this one is not to be missed and I can’t encourage you strongly enough to make a point of checking it out at your earliest convenience.

‘Galaxy Quest’ flies into your home for the first time in 4K Ultra HD in celebration of its twenty-fifth anniversary courtesy of Paramount Home Entertainment. The beloved comedy-adventure makes its 4K debut featuring a gorgeous new Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10 newly remastered under the supervision of director Dean Parisot that looks better than most fans probably ever imagined. The noteworthy new UHD video presentation is wonderfully complemented by an immersive and hard-hitting Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack and together it offers a truly impressive and spectacular presentation of the film that looks and sounds quite marvelous. The new presentation is only further boosted by a nice collection of bonus material and this outstanding new release should have fans of the fan-favorite comedy ecstatic.

In addition to the standard 4K release, the film also makes its UHD debut with a Limited Edition Steelbook option which offers a glossy and solid case with some great artwork on the front, rear and interior. Any diehard fans of ‘Galaxy Quest’ who are fully 4K capable and have been awaiting a hopeful 4K debut of this 1999 film should be extremely pleased with the result and if you’re already considering a purchase the release is definitely recommended.

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Galaxy Quest’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition video presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR10, newly remastered under the supervision of director Dean Parisot and presented in its original 2.39:1 Aspect Ratio (with select sequences presented in 1.33:1 and 1.85:1). The video presentation looks wonderful as a whole and provides a clean, sharp and beautifully detailed presentation from start to finish that never suffers from any unexpected glitches or issues to be uncovered throughout. Detail is magnificent and noticeable on everything from the human and alien character specifics to the real world locations and those that are out of this world which all shine. The Dolby Vision HDR ups the ante on much of it by contributing some more lifelike colors noticeable on ship details, uniforms and more, all of which is nicely boosted by clean, deep black levels absent of any issues. Overall, this is a magnificent Ultra High Definition presentation that should easily thrill fans of this beloved sci-fi comedy gem.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation. This multichannel soundtrack is an absolute blast itself and serves up a clean, crisp and surprisingly immersive audio presentation throughout that repeatedly contributes to the fun. It consistently takes advantage of all seven available channels in order to send music, action and space-related effects zipping throughout the various speakers along with plenty more whenever appropriate, while never allowing any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously to become distorted or negatively impacted in the process. Overall, this is a fantastic Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that impresses at every turn and shouldn’t disappoint in the slightest.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Galaxy Quest’ features a solid collection of bonus content new and old in the way of various Featurettes and other fun videos including ‘Filmmaker Focus with Director Dean Parisot’ (running approximately 19 minutes in length), ‘Historical Documents: The Story of Galaxy Quest’ (running approximately 18 minutes), ‘Never Give Up, Never Surrender: The Intrepid Crew of the NSEA Protector’ (approximately 24 minutes), By Grabthar’s Hammer, What Amazing Effects’ (7 minutes), ‘Alien School: Creating the Thermian Race’ (5 minutes), ‘Actors in Space’ (6 minutes) and ‘Sigourney Weaver Raps’ (2 minutes). Also included are various ‘Deleted Scenes’ from the movie with intros on a couple (approximately 11 minutes altogether), a ‘Thermian Audio Track’ and the film’s ‘Theatrical Trailer’ (2 minutes).
