Your favorite demented killer doll and his blushing bride return with a new family member in ‘Seed of Chucky’ which rejoins Chucky and Tiffany as they are brought back by their child who uncovers the couple after seeing the connection on television and abandons a life at the circus in the hopes of locating a family he didn’t realize existed. Once Chucky and Tiffany are revived and reunited, they initially fall immediately back into their violent ways, but soon choose to try and do better for the sake of their confused child. As they hunt for a new couple whose bodies they can take over, both quickly realize they are unable to avoid a little killing and end up taking an uncertain Glen along for the wild and carnage filled ride.

‘Seed of Chucky’ marks the franchise’s directorial debut by creator/writer Don Mancini who also once again writes the script for the film and Mancini does a nice job guiding along this significantly more goofy and over the top installment with a fitting sense of humor and style. The film’s cast this time around features returning stars Brad Dourif and Jennifer Tilly, along with Redman, John Waters, Hannah Spearritt, and the voice talents of Billy Boyd, with nearly all of the cast offering fitting performances within that work well to complement the offbeat, humorous approach that this installment wholeheartedly embraces.

‘Seed of Chucky’ made its theatrical debut in late 2004 and unfortunately ended up being the last installment in the series to be granted a theatrical release (not including the unconnected remake of course). The film was also met with a drastically divided response by fans, many of which were not pleased with (or unable to appreciate?) the off-beat, humorously vulgar tone Mancini was going for this time around. While many still count this as their least favorite installment in the franchise, I’ve honestly always been very fond of it and thoroughly enjoyed the ridiculous style that Mancini not only went with, but thoroughly and unapologetically embraced throughout. It definitely adds a notably more humorous and tongue-in-cheek style to the story that works quite well for the character(s), while also upping the gore and bloodshed yet again. I can definitely say that I had just as much fun revisiting this one now than I did first catching it nearly twenty years ago when initially released (and of course the various revisits along the way) and I’d be lying if I said it was easy to resist arguing just how solid this entry is and how much it should be praised for doing something unique, and doing it in such a wildly enjoyable manner in addition.

Scream Factory brings ‘Seed of Chucky’ home for the first time on 4K Ultra HD, joining the other film installments in the franchise in 4K (and released alongside Bride, Curse and Cult while the first three were released last year). The new 4K Ultra HD collector’s edition release features the Theatrical Cut of the film in full Ultra High Definition with Dolby Vision and HDR-10 looking drastically better than it ever has before, and the marvelous new 4K video presentation is wonderfully boosted by a very nice 5.1 DTS-HD MA soundtrack which combined make this the best presentation of the film to ever be released at home, and by a fair margin at that.

The new Collector’s Edition release also comes with a Blu-ray disc that features the newly remastered Theatrical Cut in high definition, along with the Unrated Cut (although not from a new master), in addition to a great collection of special features both new and old including a couple audio commentary tracks, plus Interviews, Featurettes and plenty more. If you’re a fan of this film like I am, are fully 4K capable and have been hoping to see it return home with a rewarding and needed upgrade, then this new 4K UHD release for ‘Seed of Chucky’ is definitely recommended.

VIDEO:

The Scream Factory Collector’s Edition 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Seed of Chucky’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation of the film’s Theatrical Cut with Dolby Vision and HDR-10, with the film’s original 1.85:1 Aspect Ratio, from a new 4K scan of the original camera negative. The video presentation looks magnificent as a whole and delivers a wonderfully rich, clean and filmic presentation from start to finish that dazzles every step of the way and breathes some gorgeous new life into the film. It shows tremendous detail and clarity in every department, with character faces and clothing looking sharper and more precise than ever, in addition to backgrounds, interiors and even the gore showing significant improvements throughout. The Dolby Vision addition also helps to excel it to near perfection by contributing a stellar color palette that provides notable improvements in color specifics on the doll clothing and hair, as well as studio lots, outdoor surroundings and plenty more, all nicely balanced by deep, rich and clean black levels. Overall, this is a fantastic new Ultra High Definition video presentation that holds up tremendously throughout and should absolutely thrill fans.

The 4K Ultra HD Collector’s Edition release additionally includes the Theatrical Cut of the film on Blu-ray which is also taken from the new 4K scan, along with the film’s Unrated Cut although not from a new master.

AUDIO:

The Collector’s Edition 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features both 5.1 channel and 2.0 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtracks for the disc’s included Theatrical Cut. I once again opted to view with the 5.1 DTS-HD MA presentation utilized and the multichannel soundtrack contributes a clean, crisp and consistently immersive audio presentation throughout. It takes advantage of all five available channels in order to send music, along with action and vehicle effects, nature content and bits of crowd chatter and dialogue, plus plenty more throughout the various speakers whenever appropriate, while always making certain that any dialogue or other audio elements that may be occurring simultaneously remain clean, sharp and fully audible. Overall, this is an entirely capable 5.1 DTS-HD MA soundtrack that delivers nicely throughout and should satisfy the fans.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The Scream Factory Collector’s Edition 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Seed of Chucky’ includes a nice collection of bonus content including some brand new extras exclusive to this release and various previously released extras; the entirety of which can be found on the included Blu-ray disc.

While no extras are featured on the 4K UHD disc itself (even the Audio Commentary tracks are only featured on the Blu-ray as they accompany the Unrated Cut), the Blu-ray disc includes ‘2 Audio Commentary’ tracks for the Unrated Cut of the film including an ‘Audio Commentary with Writer/Director Don Mancini and Head Puppeteer/Associate Producer Tony Gardner’ and a second ‘Audio Commentary with Writer/Director Don Mancini and Jennifer Tilly’. Also included are numerous Interviews, Featurettes, fun videos and more including ‘Off With My Head! With Special Makeup Designer Tony Gardner’ (running approximately 19 minutes in length), ‘Chucky Be Demented with John Waters’ (running approximately 6 minutes), along with a ‘Slashed Scene’ available both with and without Audio Commentary by Don Mancini and Debbie Carrington’ (approximately 3 minutes), and ‘Conceiving the Seed of Chucky’ (19 minutes). Also included are ‘Heeeeere’s Chucky’ (2 minutes), ‘Family Hell-iday Slide Show’ (3 minutes), ‘Tilly on The Tonight Show’ (1 minute), in addition to ‘FuZion Up Close with The Seed of Chucky stars’ (4 minutes), and ‘Storyboard to Final Feature Comparisons’ for five scenes (approximately 14 minutes altogether). ‘2 Teaser Trailers’ (approximately 2 minutes combined) for the movie are also included, along with the ‘Theatrical Trailer’ (2 minutes) and ‘4 TV Spots’ (2 minutes altogether).
