What happened to the children who lived through the Pandemic? Stan, Kyle, Cartman and Kenny survived but will never be the same “Post COVID.” If Stan, Kyle and Cartman could just work together, they could go back in time to make sure COVID never happened and save Kenny’s life. In “The Return of COVID,” traveling back to the past seems to be the easy answer until they meet Victor Chaos.
Please Note: Paramount Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the Blu-ray I reviewed in this Post. The opinions I share are my own.
The two-part special event ‘South Park: Post COVID’ and ‘South Park: Post COVID – The Return of COVID’ begins decades into the future where our favorite young, foul-mouthed foursome are now adults each living their own lives until they receive word that their friend Kenny has died under curious circumstances amid his important research as a doctor. After arriving back in their hometown and reuniting, the old friends must team up in order to try and uncover the truth of what happened to Kenny. But when they discover that time-travel and an event that happened during their childhood at the start of the pandemic might play a crucial role, they will have to risk everything to find answers in addition to a way of hopefully stopping the pandemic for good.
‘South Park: Post COVID’ is a clever, hilarious and unique new ‘South Park’ event that actually does something that most of us never expected; show what the iconic children of the town are like as adults, decades into the future. The two special events which initially debuted on Paramount+ come together into what is basically one two-hour feature film that’s loaded with all of the vulgar, no holds barred and offensive humor and fun that the series is known for. Tackling various subjects in its typical over the top style such as Alexa, NFT’s, the restrictions on comedy in today’s world and the familiar names synonymous with so many streaming services (can any of us really say we’re surprised to see Denny’s Applebee’s Max as a popular restaurant in the future?) as well as providing a number of amusing throwbacks to previous ‘South Park’ episodes including some unforgettable moments with Butters and plenty of other fun nods and tidbits that longtime fans will surely appreciate.
Any fellow ‘South Park’ fans out there should be as thrilled as I am to see some new animated specials for the series in what is basically the equivalent of a movie a year when combined. If you’re not a Paramount+ subscriber, then this new Blu-ray release is the perfect opportunity to finally check out the first two specials from last year which includes some ridiculously enjoyable new takes on these beloved characters including a mustached Butters obsessed with NFT’s, not to mention a religious and married Cartman, plus a great deal more that fans definitely won’t want to miss.
Overall, ‘South Park: Post COVID’ serves up a fun, notably funny and quite clever new two-part special event that’s loaded with hilarious fun and throwbacks, as well as an amusing look at all of our favorite troubled kids as adults which alone makes it well worth a watch. Paramount Home Entertainment’s single disc Blu-ray release for ‘South Park: Post COVID’ brings home both special events from 2021 (‘South Park: Post COVID’ and ‘South Park: Post COVID – The Return of COVID’) featuring largely solid high definition video presentations which are complemented by multichannel Dolby TrueHD soundtracks. There may not be any bonus content included on the release and there are a few minor issues with the video presentation at times, but any dedicated ‘South Park’ fans who try to pick up each new season on Blu-ray will probably still want to add this release to their collection, especially at the right price.
The Blu-ray release of ‘South Park: Post COVID’ features a full 1080p High Definition presentation with the show’s original 1.78:1 Aspect Ratio on both of the included special events ‘Post COVID’ and ‘Post COVID: The Return of COVID’. The video presentations look quite good for the most part and offer sharp, mostly clean and vividly colored presentations from start to finish on both of the special events. They hold up quite nicely in most respects and keep all of the bright animation looking sharp and crisp down to each animated line and detail, although the presentations do suffer from some noticeable banding at times (see screenshot 6 below from around the 69 minute, 51 second point of the Play All option where you can notice the carpet in the center of the church pews showing significant banding) but fortunately everything else looks pretty great and it shouldn’t detract from the experience too significantly by any means. Overall, these are fairly solid, although somewhat imperfect high definition video presentations that should still largely please the fans.
The Blu-ray release features an uncensored 5.1 channel Dolby TrueHD soundtrack on both of the included specials. These multichannel soundtracks deliver clean, crisp and problem-free audio presentations on both of the special events. They utilize all five available channels throughout in order to send the music and other heavy elements throughout the various speakers, while most of the other key content and dialogue is delegated to the center speaker most of the time, while always still making certain that any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously with others remains clean and fully audible every step of the way. Overall, these are fully capable 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtracks that are nothing overly extravagant, but do their job well and should not disappoint.
The Blu-ray release of ‘South Park: Post COVID’ does not include any bonus content.
