Kevin, Steve, and Katie are an inseparable trio of friends doing some extracurricular snooping in the school science lab when, among the test tubes and beakers, they discover a corpse! But before they can say “Abra Cadaver,” the body disappears, rolling down Route 51 strapped to a gurney. The kids need a spare stiff, and fast. What they find is “Bud the Chud,” a half-dead decomposing humanoid, the result of a military experiment gone haywire. When Bud sets out on a killing spree, the kids, the Army, the police, and the FBI are hot on his trail, trying to save the entire town from becoming “Chudified!”
Serving as the fifth entry in the continually wonderful Vestron Video Collector’s Series Blu-ray lineup from Lionsgate, and arriving in conjunction with the fourth title ‘Return of the Living Dead 3’ (which you can read my review of here) comes the Blu-ray debut of the zany sequel ‘C.H.U.D. II: Bud the Chud’; directed by David Irving and starring Brian Robbins, Bill Calvert, Tricia Leigh Fisher, Gerrit Graham, and Robert Vaughn along with a number more. This is one of those few sequels that not only approaches everything in a drastically different direction and tone, but aside from a name really shares no similarities of any sort with its predecessor. For instance, the glowing eyed creatures prominently featured on the poster/artwork of the sequel which are representative of those seen in the original are in reality nowhere to be found within the actual movie. Even with that being the case, ‘C.H.U.D. II’ undoubtedly has its own fan base and offers a goofy and more simplistically enjoyable experience that certainly seems to have managed to attain its own cult following over the years.
Following the pattern established by the previous entries in the lineup, the Vestron Video Collector’s Series Blu-ray release of ‘C.H.U.D. II: Bud the Chud’ brings yet another cult classic home on Blu-ray for the first time. The release features fairly solid high definition video and audio presentations on the feature film that should easily thrill the majority of fans, in addition to some notable supplemental material including brand new extras created specifically for this release, featuring an ‘Audio Commentary with Director David Irving’ and more (more detailed information regarding the bonus content can be found in the special features section of the technical specification coverage below), altogether certain to make this release a definite must own for any hardcore fans of this silly sequel.
Overall, fans of both the C.H.U.D. films as a whole or simply this drastically different sequel, as well as the fellow genre fans that have been making of a point of collecting all of these fantastic Vestron Video Collector’s Series Blu-ray releases will all definitely want to consider purchasing a copy of this new Blu-ray release of the ridiculously silly ‘C.H.U.D. II: Bud the Chud’ arriving home on Blu-ray for the first time with solid high definition video and audio presentations, along with a number of brand new extras. Those who may not have caught this sequel prior but are fans of the original on the other hand may want to play it safe and give this one a watch before dropping the cash on a purchase due to its radically different nature, tone and really every aspect within.
The Blu-ray release of ‘C.H.U.D. II: Bud the Chud’ features a full 1080p High Definition presentation utilizing a 1.78:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks pretty solid as a whole, especially considering the source material. It provides a fairly clean, detailed and colorful presentation, although it does suffer some minor issues such as an apparent loss of clarity in a few brief instances, in addition to maintaining some mild elements representative of its source material, although notably fewer than some of the previous Vestron Blu-ray titles. Fans can rest assured that these issues are quite minimal and don’t drastically affect the overall viewing experience. It holds up quite competently even during the darker and more heavily populated sequences and never causes anything occurring on screen to ever become rendered indiscernible. Overall, while not entirely perfect, this high definition video presentation is still quite great and further complimented by a more than adequate bitrate; it should easily appease the majority of fans.
The Blu-ray release features a lossless 2.0 Stereo DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. This lossless stereo soundtrack delivers a pretty impressive presentation for the most part with a crisp, clean and largely capable auditory experience from start to finish. The two channels easily share the plethora of activity and all dialogue, music and action related auditory effects remain fully audible and sharp throughout, no simultaneously occurring elements ever resulting in complications. Overall, this is a fairly solid 2.0 channel DTS-HD MA soundtrack that should effortlessly do the trick for most fans of this film.
