EVERYBODY WANTS SOME!! follows freshman pitcher Jake as he arrives at college in the summer of 1980 and meets his new rowdy teammates. Together, they must navigate their way between girls, parties and baseball, all in the last weekend before school begins.
Filmmaker Richard Linklater who brought us ‘Dazed and Confused’ which many consider to be one of the definitive looks back at the 70’s jumps back in time once again with ‘Everybody Wants Some!’’ in which we journey back to 1980 and accompany new college baseball recruit Jake (Jenner) as he arrives a college freshman to join his new team compiled of young baseball all-stars. Now Jake will have to learn the ropes and earn the respect of this incredibly competitive group of individuals, while also making certain to party a plenty as the final weekend before class begins and he and his new freshmen teammates are introduced to the intoxicating freedom and excitement of college.
Written and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Richard Linklater who contributed such notable films as ‘Dazed and Confused’, ‘Boyhood’ and a number more, Linklater does a phenomenal job at the helm of ‘Everybody Wants Some!!’ guiding his own script with an obvious passion and care for the material and the era in which it occupies. The film also owes a nod to all of the talented young actors comprising the cast including Blake Jenner (TV’s Glee & Supergirl), Tyler Hoechlin (Hall Pass, TV’s Teen Wolf), Glen Powell (The Expendables 3, TV’s Scream Queens), Ryan Guzman (The Boy Next Door, TV’s Heroes Reborn), Zoey Deutch (Dirty Grandpa, Vampire Academy), Juston Street (Courage aka My All American), Wyatt Russell (Cold In July, 22 Jump Street) and a number more, nearly all of whom delivering hilarious and perfectly fitting performances in each of their respective roles.
‘Everybody Wants Some!!’ is an outstanding comedy and a brilliant throwback to the year of 1980 that is constantly brimming with hilarity and simplistic fun that is nearly guaranteed to leave you in an almost constant state of euphoria from the opening moments up until the hilarious end credits sequence. Richard Linklater delivers a truly phenomenal film here that is in many ways similar in tone to his praised ‘Dazed and Confused’ yet it’s certainly no carbon copy and always remains its own film. It never succumbs to typical storytelling methods or film formulas and the result is some of the most fun I’ve had with a movie in a long time; I’m not sure it would even be possible for ‘Everybody Wants Some!!’ to be any more fun than it already is. Any fan of Linklater’s work, the era in which the film occupies (and its many wonderfully goofy trends which are always prominently portrayed) as well as folks who simply enjoy a wildly fun comedy will definitely want to check this one out, you’ll likely be thrilled you decided to do so.
Overall, ‘Everybody Wants Some!!’ is a ridiculously enjoyable flashback to 1980 and another fantastic film from writer and director Richard Linklater whose latest effort manages to channel his infamous ‘Dazed and Confused’ in many ways while always remaining very much its own film and featuring a collection of talented young stars whose attire and appearance nail the 80’s with perfection. Any fan of Linklater’s work and comedy fans in general will want to make sure and give ‘Everybody Wants Some!!’ a shot, it’s a marvelous comedy that you won’t want to miss out on and it earns my highest possible recommendation.
