Dylan McDermott stars as Robert Saunders, a New York City mechanic who is knocked unconscious at his birthday dinner and wakes up to find himself locked inside the restaurant’s walk-in freezer.
‘Freezer’ tells the story of an ordinary man played by Dylan McDermott (The Campaign, American Horror Story) who is randomly taken and held prisoner in a walk in freezer. In order to stand any chance of survival or getting out, he will have to tell a group of random foreign goons where to find a large sum of money that he is accused of stealing. The only problem is that they have the wrong guy and he is merely a mechanic who is stuck in the wrong place at the wrong time. Now he will be forced to think quickly on his feet in order to keep from slowly freezing to death.
The film is directed by Mikael Salomon (Hard Rain) who doesn’t appear to have done many big or notable (at least to my knowledge) movies for some time, but he handles this claustrophobic thriller quite gracefully. Being a huge fan of Dylan McDermott, I was absolutely ecstatic to see him in the lead role for a change and in a film with such an enclosed setting, I knew he would really be able to get a chance to show off his talent in the spotlight and I felt he did a fantastic job. The cast also includes Peter Facinelli (Can’t Hardly Wait, Supernova) who I have always felt was a very capable actor and whom we unfortunately don’t see too much of these days. While Facinelli’s role was far smaller, he did a good job and it’s great to see him popping up some more, especially in a film with someone as great as McDermott to play off of.
Overall: ‘Freezer’ is a fun and clever claustrophobic thriller that is hugely boosted by the fantastic performance by Dylan McDermott in the lead role. It is an intelligently crafted story centering almost entirely in a walk in freezer and one I would recommend checking out, even more so for fellow fans of Dylan McDermott.
The Blu-Ray release of ‘Freezer’ features a full 1080p High Definition presentation utilizing the film’s original 2.40:1 Cinemascope Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks good; all of the colors are sharp and distinct, in addition to the detail and corners appearing perfectly organized and smooth. Considering the (likely) fairly low budget of the film, and of course the fact that almost the entirety of the movie is shot in one room, this high definition video presentation is about as nice as one would hope for and should keep most folks content.
The Blu-Ray release features a lossless 5.1 channel Dolby TrueHD soundtrack. While there is not a large amount of high volume activity occurring throughout the surround channels, one thing that really helped contribute to the experience of ‘Freezer’ in a large way is the constant noise of the freezer fans and lightly ruffling debris that is constant throughout. Even if the surround track isn’t always throwing things in every direction, the subtlety of the background noise it does consistently provide really makes this one to watch in surround sound if you do have the capability to do so.
As far as extras go, the Blu-Ray release of ‘Freezer’ certainly isn’t loaded by any means, but it includes a couple of nice informative bonus features. Included are ‘Freezer: Behind It All’ which is a short featurette taking a look into and reflecting on the film as a whole. Also included are interviews with actors Dylan McDermott and Peter Facinelli, as well as director Mikael Salomon.
