‘The End of Oak Street’ tells the curious tale of an average American family that awakens one day to discover that their street has seemingly been transported back in time, with dinosaurs roaming the local suburban blocks hunting for food. As things become increasingly dangerous and no answers to how are present, the family must stick together and push through the chaos and danger if they hope to find a way to return home to their lives and survive long enough to figure it out.

Written and directed by David Robert Mitchell (It Follows, Under the Silver Lake) who does a great job at the helm of ‘The End of Oak Street’ guiding along the thrills, heart and fun with excitement and style. The film’s cast includes Anne Hathaway (The Odyssey), Ewan McGregor (TV’s Obi-Wan Kenobi), Maisy Stella (TV’s Nashville), Christian Convery (TV’s Sweet Tooth) and more, with the majority each offering capable and solid performances as a whole in their respective roles.

‘The End of Oak Street’ is a unique sci-fi fantasy adventure that offers up plenty of tense and unnerving sequences and exciting moments paired with some character growth that allows viewers to get into the mindset of this struggling family with their previously typical problems suddenly clashing with the very real threat of death and uncertainty when they somehow end up in an era when dinosaurs still roam. The film does a great job of throwing viewers into this strange occurrence without any explanation which places us within the mindset of the characters, leaving us as in the dark to what’s going on as they are. It slowly begins to hint at something being severely off, offering glimpses of creatures and stalking dinosaurs seen through windows and the like before showcasing them in all their glory while they rampage throughout this unexpecting community.

The dinosaurs themselves also look terrific and the level of care and quality that went into their design and appearance only helps this one to really work, with a great cast led by Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor to help seal the deal and perfectly pull us into this world. There may be a few moments that don’t fully add up and a few curiosities that are never addressed or answered, but none of it really hurts the film either and I can understand why that route was taken. You have to appreciate David Robert Mitchell’s willingness to keep trying his hand at drastically different films and while ‘Under the Silver Lake’ didn’t receive the feedback many might have expected or inline with ‘It Follows’ you have to applaud someone so willing to take chances these days and ‘The End of Oak Street’ is a smart, unique and enjoyable ride that largely delivers.

Overall, ‘The End of Oak Street’ is a tense, at times emotional and altogether nicely crafted tale that’s very different from the big budget blockbusters we often see these days, but still has all the traits in style, pacing and visually spectacular dinosaurs that allow it hold its own among the other big hits and David Robert Mitchell does a terrific job of finding that perfect balance. ‘The End of Oak Street’ is highly recommended for any fans of David Robert Mitchell’s films as well as anyone that enjoys an original and clever sci-fi tale that’s as much about the danger and tension as it is the family at its core and the relationships and bonds they share. It’s a fun, curious and engaging ride that’s definitely worth taking and if you’re interested but missed it in theaters then it should be well worth your time and the price of a rental to give a shot.

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘The End of Oak Street’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10, presented in its original 2.39:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks pretty spectacular as a whole and offers up a clean, sharp and gorgeously detailed presentation from start to finish without any notable troubles to be located along the way. Details are stellar on character (and dinosaur) specifics, scenery and the views of the prehistoric forest foliage and just about everything else on display, while the Dolby Vision HDR offers some gorgeous coloring on clothing, nature elements and more and it’s all perfectly complemented with rich, deep and problem free black levels. Overall, this is a wonderful Ultra High Definition presentation that looks awfully gorgeous throughout and shouldn’t elicit any complaints.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation. This multichannel soundtrack is outstanding itself and it provides a crisp, clean and hard hitting audio presentation throughout. It repeatedly takes advantage of all seven available channels in order to send a flurry of activity whipping throughout the various speakers including dinosaurs attacking, cosmic like booming effects and more, including plenty of opportunities for your subwoofer to show off its abilities, while never causing any dialogue or other audio elements to clash with or negatively impact one another. Overall, this is a great Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that consistently adds to the fun and tension throughout.
