Synopsis:

Surf Nazis Must Die! [4K Ultra HD + Special Edition Blu-ray] delivers one of Troma’s most notorious cult classics in an explosive 4K Ultra HD presentation. After a devastating earthquake leaves California’s coastline in ruins, rival surfer gangs battle for control of the shattered beaches until Adolf and his neo-Nazi surf punks seize power. Their reign of terror comes to an abrupt end when they murder Leroy, the son of the formidable Mama Washington, who arms herself with guns and grenades before embarking on an unforgettable campaign of bloody revenge.

Combining post-apocalyptic action, outrageous satire, exploitation cinema, and Troma’s trademark irreverent style, the film has remained a cult favorite for decades thanks to its over-the-top premise, memorable characters, and relentless energy. Gail Neely leads the cast as the unstoppable Mama Washington alongside Robert Harden and Barry Brenner.

The cult classic ‘Surf Nazis Must Die’ tells the story of various surf gangs running the beaches following a massive Earthquake in California that leaves the coastline ruined. When a group of Surf Nazis begin to establish control over all the beaches with violence and an unforgiving nature, it will be up to the other local surf gangs to try and take back control. Yet the biggest mistake the Surf Nazis could have made was murdering the son of an older woman who soon decides to take vengeance into her own hands.

Directed by Peter George from a screenplay by Jon Ayre and Based on an Original Story by Peter George and Jon Ayre, George does a capable job at the helm of ‘Surf Nazis Must Die’ embracing the goofy title and never trying to transform it into something more than it is. The film’s cast includes Gail Neely, Robert Harden, Barry Brenner, Dawn Wildsmith, Michael Sonye, Joel Hile, Tom Shell and Bobbie Bresee, along with more and the majority of performances are just about what you might expect for an ‘80s Troma flick.

‘Surf Nazis Must Die’ was first unleashed in the summer of 1987 and while it’s definitely a product of its time and doesn’t hold up quite as well as it could, this one has always been one of Troma’s biggest titles and arguably one of the best titles in history as well. As far as the film itself it’s definitely a mixed bag that has some promising moments, a fun edge to the story and a plethora of references to various other film classics honored within, although it tends to get a bit too out there and irrelevant with some of the content and character interactions which can range from hilariously bad to fairly solid.

Anyone that’s a fan of Troma’s offerings will know that award caliber content is not exactly what folks are looking for from their films and in the humorous, violent and B-movie level ‘Surf Nazis Must Die’ delivers adequately on most levels and gives fans just about what they might expect, with a fun conclusion on top of it that significantly helps it all click together. If you’re a fan of Troma and this film then this 4K debut should be definite reason to get excited, and if you’re a Troma fan that never got around to giving this one a whirl, I can’t imagine a better time to do so.

Troma brings home their 1987 cult classic ‘Surf Nazis Must Die’ in 4K for the first time, featuring a pretty impressive new full Ultra High Definition presentation with HDR10 which looks better than I could’ve fathomed for a film such as this and it’s nicely paired up with a pretty solid stereo DTS-HD MA soundtrack that combined may not be utterly flawless but are surely the best this one has ever looked or sounded by a good margin. In addition to the notable new video and audio offerings, this combo pack also features a nice helping of extras and a special edition Blu-ray disc within that should have longtime fans of this one extremely excited, while also including a slipcover that features its own unique art. While this one isn’t going to be for most generic audiences, the Troma fans that would love to own it in UHD should be awfully excited and if you’re a fan that’s considering a purchase it’s recommended.
