Synopsis:

From director Jean-François Richet (Plane), the intense action-thriller Mutiny stars Jason Statham as former Royal Marine commando Cole Reed. After witnessing his billionaire boss’s murder and being framed for the crime, Reed boards a cargo ship as a stowaway in search of answers. As the ship’s crew of former mercenaries closes in, Reed launches a one-man crusade to avenge his boss’s death, only to uncover an international conspiracy. Also starring Annabelle Wallis (The Mummy), Roland Møller (Skyscraper), and Adrian Lester (The Day After Tomorrow).

‘Mutiny’ follows former Royal Marine Commander and cop Cole Reed who has been working as private security for years. When things within the company he’s working for go horribly wrong on the eve of a massive company sale, Cole must sneak aboard a cargo ship to track down answers. But when he uncovers a much larger conspiracy including human trafficking is occurring on the ship he must take action. Joining forces with another employee that’s uncovered the secret, the pair soon have nearly the entire ship’s crew trying to track down and eliminate this threat to their big shipment, but what they don’t realize is that Cole isn’t the easiest person to get rid of, and that mistake just may cost them.

Directed by Jean-François Richet (Plane, Blood Father) from a screenplay written by Lindsay Michel and J.P. Davis (Plane), Richet does a solid enough job at the helm of ‘Mutiny’ guiding along the action-packed ride with style and simplicity. The film’s cast includes Jason Statham (The Beekeeper), Annabelle Wallis (Mercy), Roland Møller (TV’s Citadel) and Adrian Lester (TV’s The Sandman), along with more, and while the performances may not be extraordinary, they are generally capable enough and rarely disappoint as a whole.

‘Mutiny’ is an entertaining, action-packed and decent action-thriller that’s very similar to many of the other action vehicles featuring Jason Statham these days. While it may not offer anything overly unique, original or shocking throughout its duration, it does keep the action and generic fun coming at a consistent pace and keeps the entire outing wrapped in a nice 95 minute package that doesn’t try to turn this simplistic action flick into some sort of misguided epic.

‘Mutiny’ never attempts to be anything more than it is and while there are a handful of moments and turns that are predictable and fairly uneventful which should be expected, for those that typically enjoy the action flicks Statham features in, you should find plenty to enjoy here especially if you don’t try to pick it all apart. It never tries too hard to establish a thorough story either and instead embraces the action flick formula in a pretty by the book manner; good guy sees injustice done, good guy takes it personally and then goes looking for answers and vengeance with violent results. Anyone that’s interested in this one will already be fully aware if this is their type of movie and those like me that appreciate these generic action flicks and are fans of Statham should be perfectly satisfied with what it has to offer and enjoy the ride.

Overall, ‘Mutiny’ is a fun, violent and simplistic action flick starring modern action star Jason Statham that does a solid job of serving up plenty of explosive fun and bloody excitement, even if the story and film itself doesn’t offer much new or noteworthy. ‘Mutiny’ certainly isn’t going to make noise during awards season and even if you’re familiar and fond of Statham’s usual fare then this one probably won’t cause you to go nuts with excitement but it also shouldn’t have any trouble holding your attention for ninety minutes. ‘Mutiny’ won’t do much for those who aren’t fans of Statham’s action movies but if you’re a fan of his or you enjoy similar by the book action flicks that do just as expected but without anything real unique or memorable, then ‘Mutiny’ is recommended and should be worth giving a whirl.

VIDEO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Mutiny’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with HDR-10, presented in its original 2.00:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks great as a whole and provides a clean, sharp and nicely detailed presentation from start to finish that never becomes plagued with any troubles or imperfections arising throughout. Details are sharp and solid on character specifics, the various areas of the ship and the numerous action sequences which hold up without issue even when occurring in darker areas. The HDR10 contributes some more finetuned colors on clothing, containers on the ship and more, while black levels are sufficiently deep, rich and problem free. Overall, this is a very nice Ultra High Definition presentation that does its job well and looks good at every turn, and it shouldn’t have any trouble pleasing fans or first time viewers.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation. This multichannel soundtrack is a definite treat in itself and it serves up a crisp, clean and hard hitting audio presentation throughout that throws you directly into the center of the action. It repeatedly takes advantage of all seven available channels to send music, along with numerous action and ship-related effects, plus quite a bit more whipping throughout the various speakers whenever appropriate, and always ensuring that any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously remain clean and fully audible. Overall, this is a terrific Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that regularly adds to the fun and action and shouldn’t disappoint.

SPECIAL FEATURES:
