Synopsis:

After being separated for 15 years, the Sword of Power leads Prince Adam (Nicolas Galitzine) back to Eternia where he discovers his home shattered under the fiendish rule of Skeletor (Jared Leto). To save his family and his world, Adam must join forces with his closest allies, Teela (Camila Mendes) and Duncan/Man-At-Arms (Idris Elba) and embrace his true destiny as He-Man – the most powerful man in the universe.

‘Masters of the Universe’ follows Prince Adam of Eternia who has been living on Earth for the past fifteen years after being sent away for his own protection during a brutal attack. Having lost track of the Sword of Power Adam spends his days trying to get by with a desk job while hunting online for his beloved sword. After finally locating and retrieving the sword with some troubles, he finds his way back to his home world where he will have to embrace his legacy and wield the mystical sword if he hopes to return Eternia to its original state and stop the evil Skeletor and his dark forces.

Directed by Travis Knight (Bumblebee, Kubo and the Two Strings) from a screenplay written by Chris Butler (ParaNorman) and Aaron Nee & Adam Nee (The Lost City) & Dave Callaham (Mortal Kombat 2021), and a story by Aaron Lee & Adam Lee and Alex Litvak & Michael Finch, Knight does a fantastic job at the helm of the new ‘Masters of the Universe’ guiding along the fun and visually marvelous ride with style and heart. The film’s cast includes Nicholas Galitzine (The Sheep Detectives), Camila Mendes (TV’s Riverdale), Alison Brie (Together), James Purefoy (TV’s The Witcher), Morena Baccarin (Deadpool), Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson (Bloodshot), Kristen Wiig (Wonder Woman 1984), Jared Leto (Tron: Ares) and Idris Elba (Sonic the Hedgehog 3), with nearly all offering solid and fitting performances in their roles.

‘Masters of the Universe’ is an absolute blast; a fun, thrilling and humorous ride that offers something for just about every fan of any incarnation of He-Man. The world of Eternia itself is visually spectacular, filled with gorgeous construction and bright, rich colors plentiful throughout, while the film also does a great job of honoring the iconic look and style of the various characters within including everyone from He-Man/Adam and Skeletor to Man at Arms and more who often look like they stepped straight out of the original toys and cartoons and came to life. The action is fun, the effects hold up well for the most part and while a few moments might slightly drag it tends to keep the fun coming pretty consistently and any fan should have a grin plastered on their face throughout much of it.

The film stands on its own and will work for anyone regardless of your previous familiarity with the characters and property (although those that are more familiar will of course find plenty of nods, references and tidbits to enhance the experience) and it goes out of its way to offer plenty of throwbacks and direct nods to multiple versions of the franchise from the ‘80s cartoon series and movie to some of the more recent takes. It’s a thoroughly fun fantasy-adventure that keeps things exciting even for fans due to it never quite going where you might expect and offering at least a few surprising turns along the way.

Overall, ‘Masters of the Universe’ serves up a fun and action-packed adventure that’s as thrilling as it is humorous; not to mention visually stellar. Jam-packed with appreciation and nods to the various shows and even the earlier film, it’s a well-crafted movie that should have fans thrilled, while still keeping things simple enough to be enjoyed by those with little to no previous knowledge of these characters or their world. If you’re a He-Man fan or if you merely enjoy a solid and massively entertaining fantasy adventure, then ‘Masters of the Universe’ is highly recommended and a pretty terrific ride that’s worth taking. If you’re already even mildly intrigued but haven’t yet had the chance to give it a whirl, it should be well worth renting or streaming for those that may not want to make a blind purchase, while fans looking to pick up this 4K UHD release should be incredibly satisfied with the outstanding video and audio presentations.
