[Blu-Ray Review] Citizen Vigilante; Now Available From Quiver 2

‘Citizen Vigilante’ follows an American living in Europe who takes it upon himself to embark on a quest for vengeance against those who he deems corrupt or immoral. As the violence ramps up and he begins to gain a cult following on social media, the man’s vigilante crusade begins to blur the lines and gain the attention of law enforcement while turning him into an icon of sorts, but nothing is liable to stop this one man army on a mission.

Written and directed by Uwe Boll (House of the Dead, Postal) who does a mediocre job at the helm of ‘Citizen Vigilante’ guiding along the unpleasant and underwhelming ride with a headache inducing shooting style and often reusing the same tidbits over and over. The film’s cast includes Armie Hammer (Free Fire), Costas Mandylor (Saw VI) and more, and while Hammer does what he can in the role and shows clear dedication to his performance, the story and many supporting performances as well as the problematic story overtake just about everything rewarding.

[Blu-Ray Review] Citizen Vigilante; Now Available From Quiver 3

‘Citizen Vigilante’ is a terrible, badly crafted and disappointing action film that tries to justify its twisted violence with a supposed message that seems more like an excuse to turn a story about an unlikeable and twisted man into an antihero tale while praising his acts of violence, many of which are anything but heroic or deserved. It follows an American living in Europe overseeing his properties throughout the area while embarking upon a supposed vigilante mission that involves mass murdering police and innocent people, often for reasons as simple as their beliefs or because of something horrendous a family member did. None of the characters are fleshed out, while the man we’re supposed to be rooting for is entirely unlikable and often seems more corrupt and inhumane than some of those he sets out to eliminate.

The film never finds any sort of coherent story to follow, instead reusing the same “hype” shots time and again, while also jumping around in the timeline for no apparent reason whatsoever, and then going out of its way to make this violence as graphic and unsettling as possible which takes away from the purpose even when there might be one. ‘Citizen Vigilante’ also severely struggles to follow any logic and it becomes difficult to swallow as it progresses; such as an entire army of cops that apparently think the best approach to a dangerously armed man in a room is to enter and line up left to right in front of the massive gun in the wall so that he can murder them all without any issue, only for the next group to file in and follow suit immediately after the first batch has been massacred. It also makes no sense that the cops would have so much trouble stopping this man who promotes what he does through online videos while faking suicides in ways that would immediately be flagged, and even leaving fingerprints throughout every crime scene.

[Blu-Ray Review] Citizen Vigilante; Now Available From Quiver 4

Overall, ‘Citizen Vigilante’ is a pretty horrible film with an intended message that doesn’t do it any favors and often seems utilized merely to try and excuse its viciousness. It features a committed performance from Armie Hammer but it’s nowhere near enough to save this mess of a jumbled, illogical and just downright mean-spirited film that tries to justify the murder of countless innocents and going out of its way to showcase the deaths of those who don’t deserve it in order to make a point that never clicks. Unless you’re a big fan of Uwe Boll’s films or lead star Armie Hammer, I would strongly suggest avoiding ‘Citizen Vigilante’ at all costs. It’s a flat out horrible film with almost no redeeming qualities that tries to justify its disturbing intent but only seems to argue against it with the film’s direction and choices. This is one movie you’ll be glad you missed out on.

VIDEO:

The Blu-ray release of ‘Citizen Vigilante’ features a full 1080p High Definition presentation with the film’s original 2.39:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation on this one is somewhat of a mixed bag. Details are sharp and clean for the most part on character faces and attire as well as exterior backgrounds outdoors, yet interior backgrounds are often plagued by a heavy amount of video noise such as the yellow wall in an office that seems to be in constant motion due to the blockiness and shifting video noise (see screencap number 6 below and note the yellow wall on the bottom right of the image next to Hammer) while colors remain vibrant and bold and most of the action sequences largely hold up capably. Overall, this is an imperfect but, in many ways, solid High Definition presentation that isn’t spectacular but could also look far worse.

AUDIO:

The Blu-ray release features a 5.1 channel Dolby Digital soundtrack at 448 kbps. This lossy multichannel soundtrack does its job fairly well although many may be understandably disappointed by the absence of a lossless offering, and for the most part it provides a crisp, clean and fairly immersive audio presentation. It utilizes all five available channels in order to send music, along with some action and crowd and nature related effects throughout the various speakers, while always making certain that all dialogue and other audio elements that may be occurring simultaneously remain clean and fully audible throughout and never clash with one another. Overall, this is a pretty nice 5.1 Dolby Digital soundtrack that does its job well even if it never manages to reach the level of excellence.
