Synopsis: William Powell and Myrna Loy, Hollywood’s most effortlessly sophisticated screen partnership, venture beyond the urbane pleasures of The Thin Man into the exhilarating disorder of Double Wedding (1937). Loy is cast as Margit Andrew. the imperious owner of a fashionable boutique, runs everyone’s life—particularly that of her pliable younger sister, Irene (Florence Rice), whom she intends to marry off to the resolutely timid Waldo Beaver (John Beal). Her immaculate plans go gloriously awry when Irene is captivated by Charlie Lodge (William Powell), a fast-talking bohemian artist who makes his home in a lavish automobile trailer. Margit marches in dismissing the interloper—and finds herself disconcertingly intrigued. Charlie answers with a campaign of inspired mischief, stiffening Waldo’s spine while loosening Margit’s iron grip on propriety. Double Wedding is a prime example of the timeless chemistry of its two stars at their very best.

Unemployed Polly Parrish (Ginger Rogers) impulsively picks up a baby left at orphanage doors at Christmas. Everyone assumes the foundling is hers, including Polly’s playboy ex-boss (David Niven), who offers her a job if she’ll live up to her maternal duties. A paycheck would be handy, so Polly complies. Then the boss’ tycoon Dad (Charles Coburn) assumes the infant is his secret grandson…and things really spin out of control. Buoyed by Rogers’ irresistibly charming performance, Bachelor Mother is one of those rarities: a brilliantly cast comedy where everything – plot, pacing and dialogue (thanks to Garson Kanin’s savvy direction and Norman Krasna’s witty script) – is exactly, hilariously right.

A dashing bandit terrorizes 18th century Italy. No, make that three bandits…. because “Stanlio” and “Ollio” have also decided to become fearless highwaymen. As luck (and a clever script) may have it, the pair try to rob a bandit who’s truly fearless – Fra Diavolo- the Devil’s Brother himself! Quickly gaining the upper hand, Fra Diavolo enlists the boys as dubious allies in his scheme to lighten the purses of an aristocrat (James Finlayson) and his gorgeous wife (Thelma Todd). In this sublimely funny and charming spoof of Auber’s operetta, the music is excellent, the sets and costumes lavish, and the supporting cast are all top notch. But best of all are Stan and Ollie. Highlights include a hilarious drunk scene, a sequence in which Stanlio is ordered to hang poor Ollio, and two delightful feats of coordination by Stan; the games “kneesie-earsie-nosie” and “fingerwiggle”. Truly The Devil’s Brother is one of the most enjoyable classics starring classic filmdom’s most beloved comedy duo.

Matrimony means different things for different people. For temperamental artist Geoffrey Carroll, it means he’s in his element….and out of his mind. In their only on-screen pairing as leading man and leading lady, two of filmdom’s all-time greats star in a psychological thriller rife with pelting rain and pealing bells, blackmail and murder and calculated dread. Humphrey Bogart stars as Geoffrey, who’s making a habit of poisoning one wife and marrying another when the former no longer inspires his canvases. Barbara Stanwyck plays his current wife Sally, who puts two and two together and comes up with six – as in six feet under, the place she’ll be if she continues to accept the glass that Geoffrey’s regularly offers a nightcap. Alexis Smith also stars as the predatory neighbor who becomes the object of Geoffrey’s thirst for feminine variety.

Directed by Gordon Douglas, The Charge at Feather River stars rugged Guy Madison as a cavalry scout tasked with leading ragtag “Guardhouse Brigade” deep into hostile territory to rescue two captive women. Originally designed to maximize the theatrical 3-D craze of the 1950s, this hard-hitting Western throws you right into the middle of the action—putting you on the receiving end of flying arrows, lances, and tomahawks that leap right off the screen! Now, the Warner Archive Collection brings this exciting 3D classic to Blu-ray in a jaw-dropping presentation. The feature has been painstakingly restored from the original Left-Eye and Right-Eye 35mm camera negatives, aligning the classic dual-strip production elements with modern digital precision to deliver an unparalleled stereoscopic experience. Highlighted by an energetic score by the great Max Steiner, the frontier never felt so dangerously authentic! Cast as a free – spirited playboy, Astaire narrowly escapes marriage to a showbiz siren before chancing upon a delectable Bowery mission worker (Vera – Ellen). This time, buoyed by the wings of “true love”, he finds himself literally dancing on air– up, up, and away, above the city rooftops, and onto the Washington Square arch! To prove his worth to the skeptical “Daughter of the Right” (it’s the up trotters who needs saving nowadays” he tells her), Astaire goes to work, first is a streetcar conductor, then as a song-and-dance waiter at a fancy restaurant. While trying to resolve their differences, the stars performed dazzling dance routines to Johnny Mercer and Harry Warren’s warmly nostalgic score. Among the highlights are a spectacular sequence inspired by colorful “Currier and Ives” artwork, Vera Ellen’s sublime “Naughty but Nice” and Astaire’s knockout and iconic performance of “I Wanna Be A Dancin’ Man.”

MGM’s sleek and sizzling proto-noir masterwork matches the studio’s leading man heartthrob with its top-tier glamour icon for a walk down a very dark, extremely dangerous street. Robert Taylor IS Johnny Eager, a cold-blooded racketeer recently paroled from the state penitentiary. To his gullible parole officer, Johnny’s an honest, reformed citizen humbly driving a taxicab for a living. In reality lies a ruthless mastermind pulling the strings of a massive, illicit gambling syndicate and scheming to open a lucrative dog-racing track. When innocent, high-society sociology student Lisbeth Bard (Lana Turner) falls blindly under Johnny’s magnetic spell, the criminal kingpin sees the ultimate leverage. Lisbeth happens to be the cherished stepdaughter of District Attorney John Benson Farrell, (played with gusto by Edward Arnold), Johnny’s long-time nemesis and the very man who put him behind bars. The stakes are raised higher when Johnny plans to blackmail Farrell, using his own daughter as a pawn. But as explosive romantic sparks ignite between the underworld king and the debutante, Johnny’s frozen heart threatens to pull down his entire empire. Brilliantly directed with hard-boiled style by Mervyn LeRoy and co-starring Van Heflin in a tour-de-force, Oscar®-winning performance as Johnny’s tragically brilliant, alcoholic philosopher-partner and pickled conscience— the film stands tall as a gripping, lightning-paced golden-age crime melodrama.

–
A funny thing happened to newlywed Nick Arden (Cary Grant) on his way to the honeymoon suite…. he meets his wife. No, not his bride. He meets the wife who was lost at sea seven years ago and pronounced dead. All aboard for a spinning marriage-go-round. Cary Grant, the screen’s perfect combination of romantic hunk and comedy buffoon, plays the flabbergasted Nick. Radiant Irene Dunne (Grant’s The Awful Truth and Penny Serenade co-star) plays the returned wife who cagily sets out to reclaim her former life. Randolph Scott and Gail Patrick add to the marital mix-up as Nick goes from having one wife to two to none and one. The right one. What romantic comedy has joined together let no one put asunder. Of all the giddy screwball12 comedies ever made, this remains an enduring favorite.

A young and captivating Judy Garland, and that bundle of energy Mickey Rooney (who was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar®) are the sweethearts in Babes In Arms. This swing time song-and-dance hit, based on the Broadway smash by Rodgers and Hart, also received an Oscar® nomination for its score. Rooney plays Mickey Moran, the multi-talented son of a famous vaudeville team. When his parents – and others in the community – hit the financial skids, he rounds up all the neighborhood stage kids and puts on a lavish show to raise money. The future looks bright until a sudden hurricane literally washes the whole enterprise away on opening night! What follows is a turn of events leading to a smashing finale that would set the stage for future Rooney/Garland ‘backstage musicals’ (most directed by Busby Berkeley) which would propel the stars’ careers and forever entrench them in the hearts of film fans for generations. The film is also notable for being the first M-G-M musical fully produced by the legendary Arthur Freed.

Hollywood turns the cameras on itself in the ultimate pre-Code satire of the studio system! Before “meta-cinema” was even a term, M-G-M delivered a wildly hilarious, and uninhibited look at itself with Bombshell. Already a screen superstar at the age of 22, Jean Harlow’s skill as a masterful comedienne creates a career-defining performance of self-parody as Lola Burns, a glamorous, platinum-blonde movie star utterly suffocated by her own celebrity. Surrounded by a parasitic entourage—including a freeloading father (Frank Morgan), an obnoxious brother (Ted Healy), and a thieving secretary—Lola’s biggest headache is E.J. “Space” Hanlon (Lee Tracy), a hyperactive, fast-talking studio press agent who stops at absolutely nothing to fabricate outrageous headlines and keep her name in the gossip rags. When Lola finally rebels against the madness surrounding her image to seek out a “normal” life—even trying to adopt a baby and falling for an eccentric blue-blood poet (Franchot Tone)—the studio’s machinery aggressively manipulates her back into the spotlight. Directed with relentless momentum by Victor Fleming and featuring a sparkling supporting cast including Pat O’Brien and Una Merkel, Bombshell remains a landmark piece of self-revelatory satire.
