Synopsis:

In the English village of Denbrook, George (Hugh Jackman) is a shepherd who reads detective novels to his beloved sheep every night, assuming they can’t possibly understand. But when a mysterious incident disrupts life on the farm, the sheep realize they must become the detectives.

‘The Sheep Detectives’ tells the story of a flock of sheep in the English village of Denbrook and their herder George who reads them murder-mystery novels every evening even though quite certain that they can’t understand. But when a terrible occurrence threatens the happy way of life that is all they know, the sheep realize that if they stand any chance of things staying comfortable they will have to step up and become detectives themselves in order to solve the case, finding clever ways to provide clues and other helpful tidbits to the bumbling local authority in the hope that it will be enough.

Directed by Kyle Balda (Minions, The Lorax) from a screenplay and screen story by Craig Mazin (TV’s The Last of Us) which was based on the novel ‘Three Bags Full’ by Leonie Swann, Balda does a magnificent job at the helm of ‘The Sheep Detectives’ guiding along this heartwarming and memorable tale with heart, humor and style. The film’s notable cast includes Hugh Jackman (Song Sung Blue), Nicholas Braun (One Night Only), Nicholas Galitzine (Masters of the Universe 2026), Molly Gordon (TV’s The Bear), Hong Chau (Kinds of Kindness) and Emma Thompson (Cruella), along with voice performances by Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Onward), Bryan Cranston (Kung Fu Panda 4), Chris O’Dowd (TV’s Big Mouth), Regina Hall (The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants), Patrick Stewart (TV’s American Dad), Bella Ramsey (Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget), Brett Goldstein (The Garfield Movie) and Rhys Darby (TV’s Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) with nearly everyone offering capable and rewarding performances in their roles that help this one to become quite special.

‘The Sheep Detectives’ is one of the most marvelous surprises of the year so far and it delivers a truly endearing, moving and engaging tale that should have you promptly hooked and then have little trouble keeping you enthralled for the remainder of its duration. It does a tremendous job of weaving a nice little mystery for the sheep (and of course the audience) to try and piece together while repeatedly finding ways to insert fun, laughs and some surprisingly real situations that don’t detract from the troubling nature of the moments while avoiding too much detail or specifics to ensure it stays family friendly. It’s brimming with beauty and heart, utilizing warm colors and other almost cartoonish elements to enhance the fun, while also allowing things to get slightly silly at times, although in the best way possible.

On top of everything else it’s really a beautiful and unique take on the intelligence of sheep and one that’s made all the more heartwarming and effective thanks to the collection of talented stars comprising the voice cast of the animals. Some of the effects may not always be flawless and lifelike at close inspection, but at the same time it’s also helpful in allowing the personality and intricacies of each animal to stand out in this fun story that isn’t exactly a documentary by any means and the film’s ability to quickly pull you into its welcoming vibe helps allow the viewer to let it go rather easily.

Overall, ‘The Sheep Detectives’ is a heartwarming, beautiful and family-friendly look at some of the most unlikely detectives you’ve ever seen. One of the most touching and sweet films of the year to date, it repeatedly manages to take this seemingly silly and unbelievable concept and make it feel legit, as well as emotionally rewarding at nearly every turn, with a marvelous cast both in front of the camera and serving as voice roles that help it to become truly spectacular. ‘The Sheep Detectives’ earns one of my highest possible recommendations and if you enjoy a well-made mystery that dares to get creative and is as exciting and fun as it is beautiful and moving, then this one is not to be missed and should be well worth the time to give a whirl whenever convenient.

The Blu-ray release of ‘The Sheep Detectives’ features a full 1080p High Definition presentation with the film’s original 2.00:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks fantastic as a whole and provides a clean, sharp and richly detailed presentation from start to finish that’s absent of any notable troubles to be uncovered throughout. Details are wonderful on characters, backgrounds and the sprawling landscapes, all of which are boosted by warm, rich and vibrant colors that never underwhelm and black levels remain sufficiently deep and rich. Overall, this is a great High Definition presentation that looks good every step of the way and should satisfy fans and newcomers alike.

AUDIO:

The Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation. This multichannel soundtrack offers a clean, crisp and fairly immersive audio presentation throughout. It consistently utilizes all seven available channels to send music, nature and weather related effects, plus crowd noise and more throughout the various speakers whenever reasonable, while always making certain that any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously remain clean and fully audible. Overall, this is a very nice Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that never disappoints and repeatedly contributes some extra fun to the experience.
