Synopsis:

With remastered picture and sound, the legendary, beloved big screen debut of the anvil-armed sailor of the seven seas looks better than ever. Robin Williams is the iconic Popeye, under the masterful direction of Robert Altman (NASHVILLE). Shelley Duvall is Popeye’s devoted long-limbed sweetie, Olive Oyl, one of many lovable characters who join the “sailor man” in his adventures in the harbor town of Sweethaven.

The big-screen, live-action debut of everyone’s favorite sailor man returns in 4K. The movie adaptation of the iconic animated character joins ‘Popeye’ as he arrives in the quiet harbor town of Sweethaven in search of his long-lost father who he believes he has tracked down at last. But upon his arrival he quickly finds himself unwelcome in the tight-knit and corrupt community, as well as becoming increasingly fond of local lady Olive Oyl who just happens to be planning a marriage to town brute Bluto who quickly dislikes the man. Never one to give up or run away, none of this will be enough to scare away this “sailor man” before he’s ready, but he might give Bluto and some others a headache along the way.

The ‘Popeye’ movie was directed by Robert Altman (Nashville, The Player) from a screenplay written by Jules Feiffer, based on characters created by E.C. Segar. The film’s cast includes the beloved Robin Williams in the titular role, while also starring Shelley Duvall, Ray Walston, Paul Dooley, Paul L. Smith and more, with performances varying throughout although most seem dedicated enough in their roles as a whole.

The live-action ‘Popeye’ movie first debuted theatrically in late 1980 and has always been met with mixed reactions. It’s one of those curious films that I’ve seen many times over the years but I still can’t say for certain if I really like it or dislike it. It has its charms, specifically the great Robin Williams in the title role which itself is worth a watch and it does a fun job of bringing many of the characters from the animated shorts to life such as Shelley Duvall who is annoyingly perfect as Olive Oyl and captures the character’s charms and irksome qualities remarkably well.

Unfortunately for everything that the film does well, it does something in a poor or baffling manner and then they even went and turned it into a musical which doesn’t always click and the mix of catchy songs and horrid ones tend to cancel each other out much of the time. As a whole it’s a very strange film that’s a bit too long and tries too hard to craft a coherent and sensible story for our sailor man to fall into but the end result is a mixed bag, yet one that might be worth a watch if you’ve never seen it and for those that thoroughly enjoy it’s odd style and tone it should be a treat to see it finally debut in 4K.

Robert Altman’s 1980 ‘Popeye’ movie comes home in 4K for the first time ever courtesy of Paramount Home Entertainment featuring a very nice full Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision HDR which has the movie adaptation of the beloved cartoon icon looking better than ever before. The solid UHD video presentation is capably paired with a multichannel Dolby TrueHD soundtrack that holds up fairly well and appears to be identical to the soundtrack included on the 40th Anniversary Blu-ray edition some years back.

There are no new extras offered this time around, although the 4K release includes a collection of previously released extras that can be located on the included Blu-ray copy of the film within. If you’re a big fan of the film that would love to own it on 4K then ‘Popeye’ shouldn’t disappoint on the format, but if you’re a casual fan that already owns the very decent Blu-ray edition then it will be up to you as to whether the upgraded video presentation alone justifies the purchase. For those who don’t own the Blu-ray on the other hand and have been holding out, you probably couldn’t find a better option if you’re interested in upgrading or buying the film for the first time.

VIDEO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Popeye’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition video presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR10 presented in its original 2.39:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks pretty great as a whole and it delivers a clean, sharp and filmic presentation that stays faithful to its source and never suffers from any notable issues or problems to be uncovered along the way. Detail is impressive on everything from characters to boats and the various specifics of the seaside harbor town where everything plays out, while the Dolby Vision HDR helps improve a few elements such as the reds on Popeye and Olive’s clothing which truly pop and more, with black levels remaining suitably deep and problem free throughout. Overall, this is a pretty wonderful Ultra High Definition presentation that looks good at every turn and should easily excite fans of the movie.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a 5.1 channel Dolby TrueHD soundtrack. This multichannel soundtrack offers a clean, crisp and capable audio presentation that utilizes all five available channels somewhat regularly in order to send music and some crowd, nature, boat and sea related effects, plus a few other tidbits throughout the various speakers when appropriate, although it remains notably tame much of the time and the majority of content is often centered when not in the midst of a musical number or an action-related moment. It does always make certain that the dialogue and other audio elements always remain clean and audible and never contradict or negatively impact one another. Overall, this is a decent and capable 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtrack that won’t astound but does its job well enough without any problems.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Popeye’ features a few entertaining previously released extras which can all be found on the included Blu-ray disc including ‘Return to Sweethaven: A Look Back with Robin and the Altmans’ (running approximately 13 minutes in length), ‘The Popeye Company Players’ (running approximately 9 minutes), and ‘Popeye’s Premiere’ (approximately 3 minutes). Also included is the film’s ‘Theatrical Trailer’ (approximately 2 minutes), and ‘The Sailor Man Medleys’ which allows you to jump directly to any musical number throughout.
