Synopsis:

Celebrating its 10th anniversary and available on 4K for the first time, Sing Street from filmmaker John Carney (Power Ballad, Once) remains as charming and relevant as ever as a coming-of-age tale about escape, imagination, and young love. Set in 1980s Dublin, this semi-autobiographical story is told through the eyes of 14-year-old Conor (Ferdia Walsh-Peelo), who seeks refuge from family tension as he struggles to fit in at a tough public school. Enter über-cool aspiring model Raphina (Lucy Boynton). Completely smitten, Conor aims to win her heart by inviting her to star in his band’s music video — with one small problem: there is no band. Forming a band with some new lads, the group pours themselves into writing songs and shooting videos, along the way discovering the power of music to uplift, empower, and create community.

The heartwarming coming of age story ‘Sing Street’ joins 14-year-old Conor in 1980’s Dublin as he is forced to attend a new school when his parents can’t afford the current one and soon finds a new reason to dream when a random encounter with a beautiful young woman leads to him starting a band for the purpose of casting her in their video. Rushing to build a band on the fly, Conor and his newfound friends soon discover newfound purpose in the music, offering new reasons for this group of outcasts to hope and truly believe in themselves after so long in the shadows. But to make it all work they’ll have to put everything they have into the effort, while Conor can’t help but try to win over the heart of the beautiful stranger which might not be as crazy as he first imagined.

Written and directed by John Carney (Power Ballad, Begin Again) from a story by Carney and Simon Carmody, Carney does a magnificent job with ‘Sing Street’ guiding along this beloved and heartwarming tale with hope, beauty and wonder. The film’s cast includes Lucy Boynton (Bohemian Rhapsody), Maria Doyle Kennedy (TV’s Outlander), Jack Reynor (Lee Cronin’s The Mummy), Kelly Thornton (Flora and Son), Ferdia Walsh-Peelo (CODA), Aidan Gillen (TV’s Mayor of Kingstown), and many more with nearly all offering capable and noteworthy performances in their roles, something that’s even more remarkable considering the lack of previous acting experience by the majority of the key kids.

‘Sing Street’ is a beautiful,  invigorating and thoroughly joyful experience; a perfect film that exudes hope and love, celebrating the utter joy of music and friendship and it will have you brimming with hope, wonder and happiness throughout. It’s an unforgettable tale of friendship, love and romance, not to mention what can happen when you dare to try to realize a dream and put your all into something. Clearly a very personal film from filmmaker John Carney who has commented on many occasions confirming just that, and it never loses its way or becomes the slightest bit dull throughout.

Featuring a remarkably talented group of kids in the lead roles with most never having acted at any point previously, although based on the performances you’d initially assume otherwise. This is the kind of film that manages to elicit all the right emotions and reactions and it’s nearly impossible not to fall in love with it. If you’ve never had the pleasure of this 2016 gem, then I can’t possibly encourage you strongly enough to make a point of rectifying that because this is a true heartwarming masterpiece that any fan of cinema won’t want to overlook.

John Carney’s beloved masterpiece ‘Sing Street’ arrives home on 4K UHD for the first time ever courtesy of Lionsgate Limited with a spectacular Collector’s Edition release in celebration of its 10^th Anniversary. The release features a phenomenal new full Ultra High Definition video presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10 that’s nothing short of spectacular and the impressive video presentation is perfectly complemented by an immersive and rewarding Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that together have this beloved feel-good gem looking and sounding just about perfect and far better than ever before.

In addition to the marvelous new video and audio presentations, the Lionsgate Limited Collector’s Set release also features a Blu-ray copy with the newly remastered video and audio, along with a brand new mini-documentary reflecting on the film, plus numerous previously released extras and a nice physical reproduction of Conor’s school notebook of sketches and lyrics as seen in the movie. This great little set also features a sturdy side-slip case with a DigiPak insert that’s jam-packed with unique and beautiful artwork inside and out. If you’re a fan of John Carney’s unforgettable gem ‘Sing Street’ that would love to own it in 4K, then this Lionsgate Limited Collector’s Set is very highly recommended and should make a perfect addition to your collection.

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Collector’s Set release of ‘Sing Street’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition video presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10 presented in its original 2.39:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks delightful and it offers a clean, sharp and beautifully detailed presentation from start to finish without any noticeable troubles or imperfections to be located along the way. Detail is great on characters, clothing and the various backgrounds and settings, while the Dolby Vision HDR offers some rewarding improvements including more lifelike coloring on clothing, nature and the various backgrounds along the way, and black levels remain capably deep, rich and problem free. Overall, this is a fantastic Ultra High Definition presentation that dazzles at every turn and should absolutely thrill fans of this beloved film.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation. This multichannel soundtrack is by no means underwhelming itself and it delivers a clean, crisp and consistently immersive audio presentation throughout that repeatedly complements and enhances the viewing experience. It takes advantage of all seven available channels in order to send music overtaking the various speakers quite regularly, along with crowd chatter, weather effects and more, while never causing any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously to become negatively impacted in the process. Overall, this is a terrific Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that delivers splendidly throughout and shouldn’t disappoint in the slightest.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The 10^th Anniversary 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Collector’s Edition release of ‘Sing Street’ features some enjoyable extras new and old, as well as collectible packaging that features a solid and sturdy side-slip case with a Digipak insert that features gorgeous artwork throughout (the Lionsgate Limited post lists “Evocative art from illustrator Courtney Autumn Martin captures the spirit of 1980s Dublin and the enduring power of music to shape our lives”). In addition to the nice packaging itself, the release also includes a reproduction of Conor’s school notebook of sketches and lyrics as seen in the film. The on-disc extras include the Lionsgate Limited exclusive mini-documentary ‘The Risk of Rock & Roll: Going Back to Sing Street’ (running approximately 28 minutes in length), in addition to various Legacy extras including ‘Making Sing Street’ (running approximately 5 minutes), ‘John Carney and Adam LeVine Talk Sing Street’ (approximately 3 minutes), plus a collection of ‘Cast Auditions’ (17 minutes altogether) and ‘B-Roll Footage’ (11 minutes). Also included is the ‘Theatrical Trailer’ (2 minutes) and ‘TV Spots’ (3 minutes altogether) for the film, and the ‘”Drive It Like You Stole It” Music Video’ (4 minutes).
