Synopsis:

In the 72 hours before D-Day, and with the fate of the free world hanging in the balance, General Dwight D. Eisenhower and Group Captain James Stagg face an impossible choice—launch the largest and most dangerous seaborne invasion in history or risk losing the war altogether.

‘Pressure’ tells the remarkable true story of the 72 hours leading up to D-Day as the fate of the war hangs in the balance and General Dwight D. Eisenhower and newly assigned meteorologist Group Captain James Stagg race against time in an attempt to accurately find a weather forecast for the planned day that could mean success or failure depending on the accuracy. As Stagg and another debate their findings and Eisenhower pushes for prompt updates, Stagg refuses to relent, believing that going as planned could spell certain doom instead of victory.

Directed by Anthony Maras (Hotel Mumbai) from a screenplay by David Haig (My Boy Jack) and Anthony Maras, Maras does a fantastic job at the helm of ‘Pressure’ guiding along this remarkable true tale with heart, emotion and tension. The film’s cast includes Andrew Scott (Wake Up Dead Man), Brendan Fraser (Rental Family), Kerry Condon (Night Swim), Chris Messina (Juror #2), Damian Lewis (TV’s Billions) and more, with nearly all offering capable and solid performances in their respective roles that each help this film to be as powerful and memorable as it is.

‘Pressure’ is a fascinating, impressively crafted and often notably tense look at the search for answers and quality weather leading up to D-Day and the conflict within the forces to ensure success and the danger of delaying the plans for too long. It manages to create palpable tension within the discussions and arguments and even while these discussions occur outside of the front lines, the manner in which the varying opinions and determination of clashing professionals builds is remarkable and keeps the viewer locked in, engaged and glued to the screen throughout, never becoming dull or slightly repetitive even without much action occurring.

The uniforms, planning rooms and everything else do a spectacular job of representing the era and bringing this true tale to fresh life in the film, while also utilizing actual stock footage that’s cleverly interchanged with the filmed footage for this movie itself works tremendously and only helps to make the unforgettable tale that much more powerful and realistic. The solid guidance of director Anthony Maras and his clear dedication to getting things right does wonders for its impact, while noteworthy performances by Andrew Scott, Brendan Fraser and others only help to seal the deal, helping this one to evolve into something quite special and memorable.

Overall, ‘Pressure’ is a beautifully shot, impressively intense and powerful true tale that never fails to create tension and uneasiness through discussions, arguments and planning, while the true story it’s based on always remains prominent and only helps to excel the unease and emotion of it all. Director Anthony Maras does a spectacular job guiding along the events while lead stars Andrew Scott and Brendan Fraser repeatedly shine and complement it all throughout. ‘Pressure’ is highly recommended for anyone that appreciates an unforgettable true story told right and anyone else that’s fond of great filmmaking and powerful performances should also find plenty to appreciate within. If you’re already even mildly intrigued then ‘Pressure’ is absolutely worth going out of your way to check out when possible and it shouldn’t underwhelm.

VIDEO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Pressure’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10, presented in its original 1.85:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks spectacular as a whole and it delivers a sharp, clean and beautifully detailed presentation from start to finish without any noticeable issues arising along the way. Detail is terrific on characters, backgrounds and views of weather occurrences and the Dolby Vision HDR improves numerous tidbits by offering more lifelike coloring on uniforms, war rooms and exteriors, while black levels are competently deep, rich and problem free. Overall, this is a wonderful Ultra High Definition presentation that shines at every turn and should have no trouble pleasing fans and newcomers alike.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation. This multichannel soundtrack offers a crisp, clean and consistently immersive audio presentation throughout. It repeatedly takes advantage of all seven available channels in order to send weather effects, crowd chatter and yelling amid discussions and planning rooms, along with plenty more and it never allows any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously to become negatively impacted or distorted along the way. Overall, this is a very nice Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that sounds great and does a nice job of enhancing the tension and excitement of the tale throughout.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Pressure’ offers a couple of entertaining extras in the way of the Behind the Scenes Featurettes ‘Building Pressure’ (running approximately 9 minutes in length) and ‘An Authentic World of War’ (running approximately 10 minutes).
