Synopsis:

In this follow-up to the explosive 2021 cinematic adventure, the fan-favorite champions – now backed by Johnny Cage himself – face off in a final, lawless tournament to end the reign of Shao Kahn, a tyrant who threatens the very existence of Earthrealm and its defenders.

‘Mortal Kombat II’ rejoins the heroic fighters from the first film as the inevitable tournament looms. With fighters having already fallen and the fate of Earthrealm threatened, Raiden and Sonya head to Hollywood in order to enlist the help of Johnny Cage, a washed-up action movie star who bears the mark and has the potential to be something extraordinary if only he can get out of his own head. As the tournament begins and fighters begin to fall on both sides, things only become far more uncertain when the enemy embarks on a plot to corrupt the fights and ensure their victory by attempting to give the deadly conqueror Shao Kahn the power of a god.

Directed once again by Simon McQuoid (Mortal Kombat 2021) from a screenplay by Jeremy Slater (Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire) and based on the videogame created by Ed Boon and John Tobias, McQuoid does a nice job at the helm of ‘Mortal Kombat II’ guiding along the sequel with style, fun and a clear appreciation of the property throughout. The cast of the sequel includes Karl Urban (TV’s The Boys), Adeline Rudolph (Do Not Enter), Jessica McNamee (The Meg), Josh Lawson (TV’s St. Denis Medical), Ludi Lin (Aquaman), Mehcad Brooks (TV’s Law & Order), Tati Gabrielle (TV’s The Last of Us), Lewis Tan (Deadpool & Wolverine), Damon Herriman (Better Man), Chin Han (Skyscraper), Tadanobu Asano (Thor: Ragnarok), Joe Taslim (The Furious) and Hiroyuki Sanada (John Wick: Chapter 4), and while some of the performances are superior to others, Urban tends to easily steal the show with his terrific portrayal of Johnny Cage.

‘Mortal Kombat II’ is a great time from start to finish; a brutally bloody, violent and thrilling ride that takes everything that worked from the previous installment and doubles down on it, while also giving fans what they truly want this time around in other departments, with the actual tournament itself focused upon heavily with all its carnage-fueled battles and fun and no shortage of nods and direct recreations of iconic moments from the games. The sequel not only throws in plenty of gory fatalities and blood-soaked showdowns that should have fans thrilled, but also a few smaller amusing tidbits such as a character wobbling in place after losing a fight only to collapse after no finishing move is delivered.

The sequel also manages to keep viewers on their toes and whether you might be a diehard fan of the games themselves or more of a recent fan that’s being largely introduced via these films there are a handful of turns and surprises that are liable to keep viewers from knowing exactly how things will play out, along with introducing a nice collection of beloved characters this time around such as Kitana, Shao Kahn, Baraka and various other notable new additions joining the returning cast from the first movie. The sequel does feel more like it was created as an ongoing television series than a film at times, but the nonstop fun, humor and bloody carnage should help most with any interest to let that go. As was the case with the first entry some performances are certainly better than others, but this time around Karl Urban easily steals the show and he’s absolutely perfect as Johnny Cage, bringing all of the goofy idiocy, clever wit and amusing fighting style to the table while also eliciting plenty of chuckles and laughs along the way.

Overall, Mortal Kombat II’ delivers an immensely entertaining sequel that’s filled with spectacular fights, fan-favorite characters (including Karl Urban as a phenomenal Johnny Cage that’s easily one of the film’s most enjoyable aspects) and even more blood-soaked violence and carnage than the previous outing. It’s certainly a superior sequel to the largely rewarding 2021 reboot that fine tunes much of what didn’t work last time around and merges it with a doubling down of what did and the result is a truly fun ride that fans should have a blast with. If you’re a fan of the video games and/or were a fan of the 2021 film it follows then ‘Mortal Kombat II’ is highly recommended and probably one you won’t want to overlook or miss out on. If you haven’t yet had the chance to check it out I would strongly encourage doing so because odds are you will be pleasantly surprised with just how much fun this follow-up manages to be.

VIDEO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Mortal Kombat II’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10, presented in its original 2.39:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks spectacular across the board and it serves up a clean, sharp and beautifully detailed presentation from start to finish that never suffers from any issues to be located along the way. Detail is marvelous on everything from characters to the numerous realms and fighting locations which all shine and the vibrantly colored ride is often improved to some degree by the Dolby Vision HDR which offers some more lifelike and full-bodied colors on blood, backgrounds and more, while black levels remain perfectly deep, rich and problem free. Overall, this is a wonderful Ultra High Definition presentation that dazzles at every turn and should easily excite fans as well as first time viewers.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation. This multichannel soundtrack is something quite special in its own right and it delivers a crisp, clean and wildly aggressive audio presentation throughout. It consistently takes full advantage of all seven available channels to send music, action effects, crowd noise and a great deal more repeatedly whipping throughout the various speakers whenever appropriate and never causing any simultaneously occurring dialogue or other audio elements to be contradicted or negatively impacted in the process. Overall, this is a marvelous Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that regularly adds to the fun and excitement throughout.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Mortal Kombat II’ features some fun extras in the way of Behind the Scenes Featurettes that go behind bringing the new film to life. They include ‘Mortal Kombat II: Evolving the Saga’ (running approximately 6 minutes in length), ‘Building the Realms of Mortal Kombat’ (running approximately 6 minutes), ‘Mortal Kombat II: Choose Your Fighter’ (approximately 6 minutes), ‘Klose Quarters Kombat’ (6 minutes) and ‘A “Boon” to Gamers Everywhere’ (3 minutes).
