JACK REYNOR as Charlie Cannon and NATALIE GRACE as Katie Cannon in New Line Cinema’s, Atomic Monster’s and Blumhouse’s “LEE CRONIN’S THE MUMMY.” A Warner Bros. Pictures Release.

‘Lee Cronin’s The Mummy’ tells the terrifying tale of a journalist and his family who while living in Cairo have their daughter abducted by a mysterious individual only for her to vanish without a trace during a storm. Eight years later the family is living the best life possible considering when they receive the unexpected news that their daughter has been found, and alive. But when they are reunited with her what should be a truly heartwarming reunited family soon turns to horror when they begin to realize that something is terribly wrong with the girl and it’s beginning to affect the entire family.

Written and directed by Lee Cronin (Evil Dead Rise, The Hole in the Ground) who does a solid job at the helm of ‘The Mummy’ guiding along his twisted and disturbingly graphic tale with a calm tension. The film’s cast includes Jack Reynor (Power Ballad), Laia Costa (TV’s The Wheel of Time), May Calamawy (TV’s Moon Knight), and Veronica Falcón (Imaginary) along with more and most offer generally solid and capable performances in each of their roles.

NATALIE GRACE as Katie Cannon in New Line Cinema’s, Atomic Monster’s and Blumhouse’s “LEE CRONIN’S THE MUMMY.” A Warner Bros. Pictures Release.

‘Lee Cronin’s The Mummy’ is a bleak, thoroughly unsettling and unforgiving exploration of a family’s worst nightmare that manages to evolve into something far more terrifying than they could have ever expected. First off, forget about The Mummy films you know because this couldn’t be the farthest thing from the classic movie or even the more modern takes on it, and nothing is likely to prepare you for what this brutal ride has in store. Even in today’s world it’s rare to see a mainstream, big studio horror film that dares to go this dark in its approach and this graphic in its gore and if you’re one that’s bothered by truly gnarly and insanely unsettling scenarios that never hesitate to show you every detail of the horrendous activity then this one is not for you. Yet, if you’re a genre fan that appreciates a truly dark, bleak and at times almost unbearable horror tale that’s as uncompromising as it is graphic then Lee Cronin’s new original take on ‘The Mummy’ should be right up your alley and it never for a minute restrains itself or pulls its punches.

Not many films manage to make me squirm after all of these years but this one had its moments and there were a few scenes that certainly managed to work their way under my skin. As a big horror fan and someone who appreciates brutally dark and unnerving films such as this I have to say I don’t agree with or understand the heavy backlash by many critics. It may borrow heavily from a handful of other popular horror films but it’s willingness to dive so deeply into the darkness and terrifying nature of the tale and the capably crafted manner in which the gore and body horror elements are served up are quite impressive.

Overall, ‘Lee Cronin’s The Mummy’ is a wild, disturbing and uncompromising look at a brutal nightmare that evolves from what should be a truly cherished time for a family that quickly shifts to anything but. It borrows many traits from other popular horror films over the years and mashes them up into a unique take on the property that takes things in a drastically different direction and while lacking in originality it does a spectacular job of serving up the terror and unsettling gore and body horror with a perfectly nasty vibe that quickly gets under your skin. If you’re not a fan of overly graphic or bleak and unsettling horror films then you’ll definitely want to avoid this one, but if that type of twisted fun is something that gets your attention then Lee Cronin’s twisted take on ‘The Mummy’ is very much worth checking out.
