Synopsis:
A flight from Los Angeles to Shanghai goes down in the middle of the Pacific. After surviving the crash, the survivors soon discover they’re not alone and they must survive the shark infested waters.
‘Deep Water’ joins a packed airline flight from Los Angeles to Shanghai that crashes down in the middle of the Pacific after an onboard accident results in chaos. But for the few employees and passengers lucky enough to survive the fiery destruction and crash into the water, things are only about to become worse once they discover that a pack of flesh hungry sharks are patrolling the waters in search of potential victims. Now the remaining survivors will have to fight with everything they have if they hope to survive long enough for the hopeful rescue party to find them.
Directed by Renny Harlin (Deep Blue Sea, The Strangers: Chapter 3) from a screenplay written by Pete Bridges (TV’s Two Years Later) and Shayne Armstrong (Bait) & SP Krause (The Darkness 2016) and Damien Power (Killing Groun), from a story by Shayne Armstrong & SP Krause, and additional writing by John Kim; Harlin does a nice job at the helm of ‘Deep Water’ embracing all of its B-movie glory and fun and enhancing the goofy chaos and insanity throughout. The film’s cast includes Aaron Eckhart (The Bricklayer), Angus Sampson (They Will Kill You), Ben Kingsley (The Killer’s Game), Lucy Barrett (Skincare) and Molly Belle Wright (The Best Christmas Pageant Ever), along with more and each offers largely fitting and capable enough performances in their roles.
‘Deep Water’ is exactly what a B-movie should be in just about every way. It’s by no means a necessarily good movie but it’s an absolute blast throughout that serves up nary a dull moment once it gets moving and repeatedly goes out its way to embrace its silly and over the top nature at every turn. After all, what could possibly complement a plane crash disaster film packed with bloody brutality and chaos more than switching up the formula in the second half into a shark attack survival film?
It would seem safe to assume that anyone that goes into this one should have a pretty good idea of just what they’re getting into and if anything ‘Deep Water’ is even more enjoyable and wild than you might expect, complete with ridiculous and despicable characters including a few who you’re just waiting to see ripped apart, along with others who are quite obviously there as disposable fodder from the onset and then naturally a few more heroic individuals who you can easily root for. The formula couldn’t be any more simplistic and while there may be a few minor surprises dished out along the way they’re few and far between and very few have any substantial impact.
Overall, ‘Deep Water’ is a perfectly goofy, gory and over the top B-movie that does a terrific job of embracing its ridiculousness and taking it to some splendidly extreme levels that amp up the silly fun throughout and keep the extreme fun coming at full speed once it takes off. It’s always hard to rate films like this and while I may have given it an average score due to its silly and often somewhat cheap-looking effects (though not as cheap-looking as I expected admittedly) make no mistake, I had a great time taking this ride and if you enjoy a insanely over the top B-movie that always embraces what it is, then ‘Deep Water’ is a trip you’ll probably want to take yourself and if you’re already intrigued it should be worth your time and the price of rental to check out, especially if you can shut off your brain and just roll with the bloody and delightfully stupid fun.
VIDEO:
The Blu-ray release of ‘Deep Water’ features a full 1080p High Definition presentation with a 2.35:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks pretty spectacular as a whole and provides a clean, sharp and nicely detailed presentation from start to finish that showcases some solid detail on everything from characters to backgrounds and even holds up well amid the many fast moving sequences throughout. Colors are bold and bright at times when appropriate, with interior plane lighting and the sunny ocean backdrop looking great, while black levels are deep, rich and balanced with the many notably dark sequences looking very good. Overall, this is a solid high definition presentation that does its job well and shouldn’t have much trouble pleasing fans and first time viewers.
AUDIO:
The Blu-ray release features a 5.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. This multichannel soundtrack offers a clean, crisp and hard hitting audio presentation throughout that regularly stands out in the more hectic moments. It repeatedly takes advantage of all five available channels in order to send action and disaster effects along with more; featuring waves crashing and sharks moving around, plus whipping air and debris during the plane crash, in addition to plenty more zipping throughout the various speakers whenever fitting, and never causing any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously to become distorted or negatively affected. Overall, this is a great 5.1 DTS-HD MA soundtrack that consistently contributes some additional fun and tension to the viewing experience.
