Synopsis:

U.S. marshal John Kruger (Arnold Schwarzenegger) “erases” the lives and identities of people entering the Witness Protection Program. When his latest charge (Vanessa Williams) uncovers a deal to put a new superweapon in the wrong hands, it’s a do-or-die assignment. Kruger embarks on a high-octane action spree to protect her. As exciting as it is entertaining, Eraser is unstoppable.

‘Eraser’ joins hard-edged U.S. Marshall John Kruger who specializes in “erasing” people that are in need of a second chance when involved in the witness protection program. When his newest charge ends up over her head after uncovering a secret plan to sell off advanced weaponry to the wrong folks, John is forced to find a way to keep her safe as a mass of heavily armed soldiers descend upon her trying to silence her. But as the pair gets deeper into the conspiracy they soon discover that it goes much deeper than they could have fathomed.

‘Eraser’ is directed by Charles Russell from a screenplay by Tony Puryear and Walon Green, and a story by Puryear and Green & Michael S. Chernuchin, and Russell does a solid job at the helm guiding along the fast-paced and mindless action and excitement with style. The film’s cast includes Arnold Schwarzenegger, James Caan, Vanessa Williams, James Coburn, James Cromwell, Danny Nucci and Robert Pastorelli and the majority each offer perfectly capable and fitting performances throughout in their roles.

‘Eraser’ is simple, explosive and mindless fun that will keep you engaged and entertained while never going out of its way to get clever with the story, and sometimes that’s exactly what we want is a film that we can enjoy and not have to think too hardly about. Initially released in 1996 and while the cheesy jokes and formula are very much reminiscent of ‘90s action movies, it still holds up very well in style, look and its ability to keep things exciting and consistently moving at a steady pace, and with a notable supporting cast including James Caan and Vanessa Williams in addition to help keep it moving along smoothly.

While ‘Eraser’ is by no means one of Arnold’s most noteworthy films of his career, I’ve always thoroughly enjoyed this one for its fast-paced and consistently thrilling fun, and funny enough I can still remember receiving the Laserdisc as a gift as a teenager and watching it a surprising number of times. It may not be a thoroughly amazing film in every way but it knows exactly what it wants to be and does a pretty great job of delivering precisely that. If you’re a fan of Arnold’s work or of ‘90s action films in general but haven’t ever seen ‘Eraser’ I would certainly encourage giving it a whirl, and it’s definitely never looked or sounded anywhere near as marvelous as it does here in 4K.

‘Eraser’ brings the big, explosive fun home on 4K Ultra HD for the first time courtesy of Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment in celebration of its 30^th Anniversary. The 1996 action outing’s 4K debut features a terrific full Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR10 that looks awfully great and is splendidly paired with an aggressive and immersive new Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that has the stylish action looking and sounding better than ever. In addition to the tremendous new video and audio offerings on hand, the release also features a pair of brand new Featurettes that fans should enjoy, although the extras are limited to those two brief inclusions. If you’re a dedicated fan of Arnold’s work or if you simply enjoy this easygoing, violent good time and would love to own it on 4K with marvelous new video and audio masters, then this 4K UHD release of ‘Eraser’ is recommended, especially if you can find it at the right price to fit your budget.

VIDEO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Eraser’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10, presented in its original 2.39:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks fantastic as a whole and delivers a clean, sharp and beautifully detailed, remastered presentation that never suffers from any faults or troubles to be uncovered along the way. Detail is spectacular across the board on everything from character specifics to action sequences and backgrounds, while the Dolby Vision HDR improves upon many elements throughout such as the vibrant green hue coming off the new guns, plus blood and nature elements, along with more, and it’s all nicely boosted by sufficiently deep and rich black levels that shouldn’t disappoint. Overall, this is a tremendous Ultra High Definition presentation that has the ‘90s action flick looking even better than anticipated and fans should be very satisfied.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack (as well as the original Theatrical audio presented in 5.1 DTS-HD MA). Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation. This multichannel soundtrack also shows some significant improvements over prior home video releases and it serves up a clean, crisp and hard hitting audio presentation throughout that repeatedly enhances the explosive fun. It utilizes all seven available channels pretty regularly in order to send music, action effects and debris, vehicle activity and a whole lot more whipping throughout the various speakers at every reasonable opportunity, and never allowing any dialogue or other audio elements to become negatively affected along the way. Overall, this is a great Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that dazzles throughout and is certain to excite fans.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Eraser’ features a pair of brand new Featurettes including ‘Reinventing the Modern Action Hero – The Evolution of Arnold’ (running 6 minutes in length) and ‘90s Action Thriller Reimagined’ (running approximately 8 minutes).
