Synopsis:
Since its debut nearly four decades ago, the Rambo series starring Sylvester Stallone has become one of the most iconic action- movie franchises of all time. An ex-Green Beret haunted by memories of Vietnam, the legendary fighting machine known as Rambo has battled small-town prejudice, freed POWs, rescued his commanding officer from the Soviets, and liberated missionaries in Myanmar. In his final mission, Rambo’s vengeance is unleashed after an old friend’s granddaughter is kidnapped in Mexico.
John Rambo returns home with all five iconic adventures collected in one deluxe set! Featuring ‘First Blood’, ‘Rambo: First Blood Part II’, ‘Rambo III’, ‘Rambo (2008)’ and ‘Rambo: Last Blood’ chronicling decades worth of Rambo’s battles from his dangerous confrontation with a small town’s police department in ‘First Blood’ to his desperate attempt to rescue the young woman he loves like a daughter from human traffickers in Mexico in ‘Rambo: Last Blood’, and also featuring both the Theatrical and Extended Editions of the fourth and film films. So grab your popcorn and get comfortable for hours of explosive and hard hitting fun like only Rambo can dish out.
Rambo is one of the most familiar titles in the legacy of ‘80s action and beyond, and alongside Rocky is one of the franchises most synonymous with Sylvester Stallone and for good reason. Originally introduced in the 1982 film ‘First Blood’ that started it all and returning for four sequels through the 2019 conclusion ‘Rambo: Last Blood’ Stallone has embodied the character and all of his heart, struggle and unstoppable nature, cementing John Rambo as one of the greatest action film characters in history.
Just as is the case with any franchise there are some entries that are undeniably superior to others, yet each delivers plenty of wild action and explosive fun and it’s hard to overly dislike any installment in the series. Even the somewhat underwhelming ‘Rambo III’ still manages to deliver nearly 100 minutes of nonstop action and bloodshed, even being credited in 1990 as the most violent film made according to Guinness Book of World Records at that point. If you’re a fan of classic action films from this era that’s somehow never had the pleasure of the ‘Rambo’ films then I would strongly suggest going out of your way to fix that sooner than later because this is one of the true great action franchises and one that should not be missed by anyone that enjoys the genre.
All 5 films in the franchise arrive home looking and sounding better than ever before in the ‘Rambo: Complete Collection’ 4K set available exclusively from Amazon. The new collection features all five films (and both the Theatrical and Extended Versions of ‘Rambo’ and ‘Rambo: Last Blood’) with full Ultra High Definition presentations with Dolby Vision and HDR-10 and every installment absolutely shines. The outstanding video presentations are perfectly complemented by Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtracks that together will have ‘Rambo’ fans cheering in excitement. It is also very much worth noting that this is first time that every film in the series has been made available with both Dolby Vision and Atmos which is certainly a momentous occasion in itself.
In addition to the impressive new video and audio offerings, the set also features a remarkable wealth of bonus material including a few new goodies exclusive to this release in addition to hours and hours of previously released bonus content which is included on a bonus 4K UHD disc dedicated to the supplements. If you’re a fan of the ‘Rambo’ franchise that doesn’t yet own the entire series in 4K or were waiting for potential Dolby Vision + Atmos upgrades for each then this Complete Collection will be a must own for your collection. The set also arrives in a sturdy side slip case that attaches to the interior in order to slide out and form extended showcase artwork on front and back (see the beauty shot at the bottom of this review for a better idea of what to expect inside). Now, unfortunately as of this writing the set is unavailable to purchase on Amazon although I would strongly encourage checking regularly for possible restocks if you’re interested in purchasing it.
VIDEO:
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of the ‘Rambo: Complete Collection’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10 on all five films (including both the Theatrical and Extended Versions of ‘Rambo’ and ‘Rambo: Last Blood’) presented in their original Aspect Ratios of approximately 2.39:1. The video presentations looks nothing short of spectacular across the board and each provides a clean, sharp and immaculately detailed presentation from start to finish without any noticeable issues to be found along the way. Detail is marvelous throughout on everything from characters to war-like settings and the explosive action sequences all shine like never before. The Dolby Vision HDR (which is included on every film for the first time ever) enhances various colors and elements within such as blood, trees and desert landscapes, along with bits of clothing and more, while black levels are consistently deep, rich and rewarding. Overall, these are outstanding Ultra High Definition presentations that look tremendous at every turn and they should have franchise fans extremely excited.
AUDIO:
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack for all five films (including both versions of the fourth and fifth) along with some additional soundtrack options that vary by film. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentations. These multichannel soundtracks are also absolutely wonderful and they each offer clean, crisp and insanely aggressive and immersive audio presentations. They each take regular advantage of all seven available channels in order to send a whirlwind of activity throughout the various speakers whenever appropriate including everything from gunshots, explosions and debris to helicopters, nature and crowd noise, plus a great deal more, while never causing any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously to become distorted or rendered problematic along the way. Overall, these are phenomenal Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtracks that immerse you in the center of the action and excitement like never before and shouldn’t disappoint in the slightest.
