The brothers are back in ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ which rejoins Mario and Luigi who are now travelling the Mushroom Kingdom and assisting with everyday problems wherever needed when they come across a new friend in Yoshi who quickly joins them on their adventures. But when a powerful princess is captured by Bowser Jr. and Peach and Toad head out to try and track them down, Mario, Luigi and Yoshi must try to keep the kingdom in order. When Bowser Jr attacks the castle looking for his now miniaturized father they are forced into the fight along with Bowser.

Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic (The Super Mario Bros. Movie, TV’s Teen Titans Go!) (and co-directed by Pierre Leduc and Fabien Polack) from a screenplay written by Matthew Fogel (Minions: The Rise of Gru), the directors do a marvelous job at the helm of ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ guiding along the exciting fun with heart, humor and style. The voice cast of the sequel features numerous new and returning stars including Chris Pratt (The Lego Movie), Anya Taylor-Joy (TV’s The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance), Charlie Day (The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part), Jack Black (Kung Fu Panda 4), Keegan-Michael Key (Transformers One), Benny Safdie (TV’s The Curse), Donald Glover (Mufasa: The Lion King), Glen Powell (TV’s Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous) and Brie Larson (TV’s Scott Pilgrim Takes Off), with nearly all contributing in a positive way to the animated follow-up.

‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ is nothing short of a marvel for fans of the Mario Galaxy and various Mario and Nintendo properties and games over the years who are just about guaranteed to have a marvelous time with this fast-paced sequel. Granted it may be short on plot this time around but it certainly makes up for it with constant fun, excitement and laughs, not to mention countless nods and Easter eggs thrown at the audience that are guaranteed to thoroughly delight fans, providing more nods and tidbits than most could ever hope to keep up with. I can honestly say it’s the most fun I’ve had at the movies in a minute and my second viewing with this 4K UHD release at home was likely even more fun.

This animated sequel is a love letter to the Nintendo world and while casual viewers that are largely unfamiliar may become somewhat lost due to the lack of real story and the flurry of random turns and character appearances which at the same time will have longtime fans that grew up with these games going nuts as they hunt for every little nod and throwback that pops up. Never trying to be complex, ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ is here to give fans a real treat that will have them revisiting and dissecting it for some time (and almost surely loving every minute of it like me) and if you can just kick back and go along with the animated ride you should have an absolute blast with this movie.

Overall, ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ is a wildly enjoyable, lightning-paced ride that’s packed with gorgeous animation, a tremendous voice cast and a constant flurry of surprises and nods to the games and overall world that will have Mario and Nintendo fans thrilled. If you’re a fan of the Mario universe, games or characters and you even moderately enjoyed Illumination’s ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ then I can’t possibly recommend ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ highly enough. It may pull back on the plot but makes up for it with a plethora of fun, nods to the games and so much more which comes together into a dream come true for diehard fans who will be grinning and giggling at just about every turn. This is one sequel that was made with the fans clearly in mind and if you’re one of them that missed it in theaters then you’ll definitely want to give this one a whirl as soon as possible.
