The debut season of ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ invites viewers back to Westeros for a simpler story; following a hopeful Hedge Knight self-named Ser Dunk the Tall who sets out to make a name for himself as a Knight following the passing of his mentor. As Dunk makes his way to a tournament with his mentor’s sword in tow he encounters a young bald child called Egg believed to be the stable boy at a local inn who begs for a chance to serve as his Squire. Initially refusing the request, Dunk eventually accepts the offering when the boy finds his own way to the tournament and remains persistent. But little does Dunk know that this anticipated tournament won’t go the way he imagined at all and what follows just might change both of these individuals forever.
‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ was created for television by George R. R. Martin and Ira Parker and based on Martin’s ‘Tales of Dunk and Egg’, with Parker serving as showrunner and the first season offering an adaptation of Martin’s first novella in the series ‘The Hedge Knight’. The series stars Peter Claffey as Dunk and Dexter Sol Ansell as Egg, with the first season also featuring Daniel Ings, Bertie Carvel, Danny Webb, Sam Spruell, Shaun Thomas, Finn Bennett Edward Ashley, Tanzyn Crawford, Henry Ashton, Youssef Kerkour, Tom Vaughan-Lawlor and Daniel Monks, along with more and each offer perfectly solid and fitting performances as a whole in their respective roles.

Season 1 of ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ offers a pleasantly different and somewhat goofy take on George R. R. Martin’s epic fantasy franchise that provides a look at the simpler side of Westeros and accompanies a hopeful Knight and his new Squire who find an unexpected bond when each needs it most. It’s a pleasant surprise of a series from Martin’s ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ world that isn’t nearly as brutal, dark and unnerving as the other stories/timelines in the franchise but still has everything that fans love about them from fantastic performances, stunning visuals and a story and collection of characters that are able to promptly grab your attention and keep you engaged at every turn.
Not only is the series filled with more unique characters that are easy to love (or hate) and you quickly find yourself feeling for, but it’s as hilarious and goofy at times as it is tense and brutal, something that is certainly new to this universe but that even more surprisingly works quite well. Imagine if Game of Thrones created its own spoof of itself yet then maintained the high production and casting values and even the powerful impact of its twists and turns, then mix in consistent humor and over the top gags and you’ll have a good idea of what ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ has up its sleeve. Fans of Westeros can also rest assured that regardless of the lighter tone and heavy humor throughout it admirably never allows it to detract from the serious moments and threat of peril which is very much present throughout its course.

VIDEO:
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Complete First Season’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10, with the show’s original 2.00:1 Aspect Ratio on all of the debut season’s episodes. The video presentations look spectacular as a whole and they each deliver sharp, clean and gorgeously detailed presentations throughout that never fall victim to any troubles or issues along the way. Detail is great on everything from character specifics and attire to the sprawling scenery and landscapes and even the grittier moments, while the Dolby Vision HDR improves many tidbits throughout such as pieces of clothing, landscapes and much more; with rewardingly deep and rich black levels to further complement it all. Overall, these are wonderful Ultra High Definition presentations that look impressive through and through and they should easily excite fans and newcomers alike.
AUDIO:
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack on all 6 Season One episodes. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentations. These multichannel soundtracks are quite terrific in their own right and they each deliver crisp, clean and fairly immersive audio presentations on each episode. They repeatedly utilize all seven available channels in order to send music, action and tournament related effects, along with crowd chatter, pouring rain and plenty more whipping throughout the various speakers whenever appropriate, all while never resulting in any dialogue or other audio elements becoming distorted or rendered problematic in the process. Overall, these are great Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtracks that never lose their way or disappoint.
