But when Sidney’s daughter (Isabel May) becomes his next target, her worst fears become reality. Forced to face the nightmare she thought was buried, Sidney launches a relentless fight to protect her family.

‘Scream 7’ rejoins longtime fighter and survivor Sidney Prescott who is enjoying a refreshingly calm life in a small town with her husband Mark and their children. But when her worst fears are realized and a new Ghostface killer emerges and begins targeting her teenage daughter Tatum who is currently the same age as Sidney was when it all started, everything changes. Now Sidney will have to fight harder than ever in order to protect the new life that she’s built and those she loves while also being forced to confront some familiar horrors from the past.

Directed by Kevin Williamson (Teaching Mrs. Tingle) from a screenplay by Kevin Williamson (Scream) and Guy Busick (Scream VI) and a story by James Vanderbilt & Guy Busick, Williamson does a capable job at the helm of ‘Scream 7’ taking the director’s chair for the first time in the series. The cast includes various new and returning stars including Neve Campbell (Scream), Isabel May (TV’s 1883), Jasmin Savoy Brown (TV’s Yellowjackets), Mason Gooding (The Gates), Anna Camp (Pitch Perfect), Roger L. Jackson (Scream 2), Michelle Randolph (TV’s Landman), Jimmy Tatro (You’re Cordially Invited), Mckenna Grace (Ghostbusters: Afterlife), Asa Germann (TV’s Gen V), Celeste O’Connor (Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire), Sam Rechner (The Fabelmans), Ethan Embry (Christy), Mark Consuelos (TV’s Riverdale), Tim Simons (TV’s Nobody Wants This), Matthew Lillard (Five Nights at Freddy’s), Joel McHale (TV’s Animal Control) and Courteney Cox (TV’s Shining Vale), with most offering decent and fitting performances in each their roles throughout.

‘Scream 7’ serves up a fun, fast-paced and bloody new chapter in the franchise that has some of the most brutal kills to date and brings back series heroine Neve Campbell after her absence in the sixth installment, but some sloppy decisions paired with some painfully illogical occurrences and a few truly painful moments and reveals that lack for logic tend to hamper it down and make it one of the weaker installments yet. In addition to the baffling choices made at times, one of the most notably missing elements this time around is that the meta commentary and witty dialogue that makes the ‘Scream’ films so noteworthy is largely absent, with the sequel falling into bad cliché territory a bit too frequently and never managing to recreate the magic that Williamson always tends to contribute; something far more curious with Williamson not only directing a film in the franchise for the first time but also co-writing.

It may be a step down from most of the other installments (although it still ends up being superior to the lackluster third film at the very least) yet that’s not to say it still isn’t a lot of fun. Packed with some familiar faces including the anticipated return of fan-favorite Matthew Lillard after thirty years (not counting his brief cameo in the background of Scream 2 although an opening podcast clip playing in a car actually humorously references that) and plenty of notable new stars joining, not to mention a rewardingly swift pace, some stellar showdowns and some of the most gnarly and clever kills to date, ‘Scream 7’ still has a lot working in its favor and if you can ignore a few of its more questionable traits any franchise fan is liable to still enjoy it a great deal.

[4K Ultra HD Review] Scream 7; Available June 16 From Paramount 4

Overall, ‘Scream 7’ is an entertaining and surprisingly brutal new chapter in the beloved franchise that offers up some hints of greatness but is never quite able to make them land or deliver on what’s teased in a manner that feels entirely satisfying. Fortunately even while lacking compared to most other entries in the series it does still serve up a very fun and notably bloody ride that’s a great deal of fun if you disregard some of the imperfections and questionable elements within. If you’re a ‘Scream’ fan then ‘Scream 7’ is definitely still recommended and certainly worth a watch if you’ve enjoyed the previous six installments, especially if you can just enjoy the film for what it is and not dissect it too much, and those who aren’t diehard fans like me that have been following this franchise for three decades may be somewhat more forgiving.

VIDEO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of ‘Scream 7’ features a full 2160p Ultra High Definition presentation with Dolby Vision and HDR-10, presented in its original 2.39:1 Aspect Ratio. The video presentation looks spectacular across the board and it delivers a clean, sharp and richly detailed presentation from start to finish that’s absent of any issues or faults to be found throughout. Detail is tremendous on everything from character specifics to the various settings including empty streets and shop interiors, while the Dolby Vision HDR helps to improve upon many elements throughout including clothing, blood and the neon glare in the bar, plus more and it’s all nicely balanced by deep, rich and problem free black levels. Overall, this is a wonderful Ultra High Definition presentation that should easily excite fans as well as newcomers.

AUDIO:

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release features a Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 channel compatible) soundtrack. Please note that this review pertains solely to the Dolby TrueHD 7.1 audio presentation. This multichannel soundtrack also holds up splendidly and offers a crisp, clean and fairly aggressive audio presentation throughout that repeatedly adds to the fun. It takes advantage of all seven available channels pretty regularly in order to send music, action and nature effects, plus crowd chatter, blaring fire and plenty more zipping throughout the various speakers whenever fitting, while never allowing any dialogue or other audio elements that might be occurring simultaneously to become problematic or negatively impacted in the process. Overall, this is a great Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible) soundtrack that holds up nicely throughout and never disappoints or underwhelms.
